Anyone made any homemade luggage for their GS?

I built a small box out of some aluminum here at work and it would fit perfectly on my bike as a rear box over the tail.  It's kind of ugly though.  Just a black rectangle, no curves at all.  I'm thinking of making a box out of fiberglass that is a little easier on the eyes.  Have any of you ever done this?  Is it difficult?  I've never worked with fiberglass at all, but I would love to learn.  Do you think this would be too much for a beginner to handle?

Nice!I never saw that thread.I'm gonna revive it.It would go well in the section that I requested be added,"Touring Tips N Tricks".
I book marked that.

Macanzie used ammo cans on his CX500 for saddle.

Yeah, the $1.00 tank bag is pretty cool!  I'm really asking about hard luggage though.  Something that stays on the bike permanently and has the ability to be locked.

Lol that will be two plastic cups taped to either side for saddle bags then.... alternativly could get really creative and do a bit of origami box making and tape those on hehe

Man, just last week there was a PAIR of Buell hard bags (lockable) on craigslist here, for get this, $25. For both. Couldn't get over to clearwater fast enough, and they sold quick.

Keep an eye on craigslist, you'll find a set of bashed hardbags for cheap, and you can re-fiber glass them.

Funny thing about the gs, if you have bags that don't look huge, they're useless. If you have some of those HUGE USABLE bmw-bike-touring-africa bags, you need to upgrade the suspension ;)

Good luck :)

20mm by the looks of it...  They're heavy bastards though, about 17 lbs a piece!

I'm thinking about a couple of Pelican 1430's for the SV.  They're significantly lighter at about 5 lbs, but made out of plastic.

Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

Shouldn't.  All the ADV guys drill holes and mount 'em with fender washers and rubber washers to keep the wet out.  The plastic is fairly thick and sturdy, plus most of the weight can be carried by the flange behind the hinge if you design your rack correctly.

I'll update when I make up my racks and get them mounted later this year.  (Yes, I'm slow)
