Why brake rebuild kits are worthless ...

I got this barn savage yesterday ... gasoline had caked and was like hard as a rock black goo ...
Brake fluid was caked up and black goo and white sand ...
The brakes were stick on ... like the lever was at the bar and it had no brakes still ...
I thought this damn thing is shot and I have to rebuild it ...
I ordered the kit ... and I started fiddling with it ... carb cleaner spray ... then I used a plier to yank the boot off that looked like it was in tatters ... and boot comes off ... and looks intact ... WTF I say and I continue to fiddle ... spray with carb cleaner and liquid wrench ... after 20-30 mins ... the plunger moves out ... I spray furiously ... plunger moves back in ... more spraying ... plunger comes back out ... 8-10 times ... mind you in all this time I am hoping for being able to remove the thing ... not fixing it ... then the damn thing works back and forth ...
Surely 20 years of age and 17 years of sitting and rotting should have killed it ... I try it and its pushing fluid just perfect and its making pressure ... lots of it, in both directions ... WTF ...
Tommorow I do the caliper and line ... if it works ...
Anyway ... caliper and M/C's dont need rebuilds ... pretty much ever ... unless they are leaking ... that's my message for today.
BTW you have to do all of what I did to do a rebuild ... getting it out is the first step ...
Cool.

Cafeboy - That sausage ... well ... yea ... true redneck barn bike ... I swear It was black when I bought it, but after a spray on hose off cleaning session it turned blue ...
But there was a shadow on there too you check that out ? ... I was so torn between the 2 ... but went with sausage cos I already had lots of parts it needed, front end, rear shocks carbs (I have one but couldn't find it yet ... I also have a caliper, front wheel disc etc ... but those on that bike were OK ... forks and rear shocks are the biggies it does need though ...
BTW I need a float for that savage ... only real part I may have to buy new ...
Caked up fuel I use general gasoline soat with cleaners like heet and seafoam and spray type cleaners ... freaking tedious as death ...
Once I have it running I'll swap the fornt and rear suspension and ride it for earnest ...
Maybe swap tars over winter and coat the tank ... the tars were holding air just fine but they got dry rot inbetween the treads ... side is OK, this has in the treads ... bad rot too.
Cool.

It was dirty and rusty ... all steel was smattered with rust ... paint was OK, all chrome was ... wonder what they had in the damn barn that it ate chrome and not paint.
Bars, pipes, forks, shocks, belt guard, battery box, sissy bar ... all of it was rotting away ... tons of aluminum pitting too ... but all paint was OK ...
I have forks and shocks, will make stainless drag bar ... battery case, belt guard and pipe might get powdercoat ... and I wil toss the sissy bar.
The good thing is, I have all of these as swappers off my other savage ...
On a savage you can powdercoat everybody part ... all metal - steel side covers, front and rear fender and tank ... but getting that rear fender out will take you an hour POS ... if all the bolts come off that is ... if any of them is rounded, forget it. Oh, its missing battery retaining plate and the tool box ... and the tool box has a lock ... all not there ...
Anyway ... its a winter project ... I get t running swap the FE and rear and it is going to get used like that ... maybe dec/jan I'll take off and swap and then do this one and swap back maybe ...
Cool.
