Front brakes, how to add second disc and caliper? (as described in wiki)

I had a look at the wiki earlier and it gave mention of the ability to add a second disc to the stock wheel but did not give any other info on mounting a new calliper to the stock fork. Has anyone tried this? If yes, how and where was the caliper installed on the stock fork? Any feedback will be much appreciated!  :)

It didn't give any info on mounting to the stock forks, because people usually use the front end from a Katana 600/750. They have dual calipers, it mentioned the wheel because you can re-use your stock gs wheel.

Yeah, that was also my understanding. If you were going through all the trouble of fabricating a bracket for an extra caliper on the stock fork, I think you'd be wasting your time. The katana fork is already a dual caliper fork and it is a much better fork.

Okay, thanks guys. In that case, i don't want to do big modifications like adapting new hardware to fit the katana front end, the wiki gave mention of being able to replace the stock forks with cbr600f1 forks. It doesn't say whether you can use the front wheel off the GS, although the wheel in the picture looks like a GS. Again, any feedback is good

I believe you need a second caliper (you can get a pair of the newer style GS500 calipers by snagging a set off an SV650 on ebay), a rotor, bolts and a second right fork lower.  Swap the second right fork lower onto your left fork leg, pop the plastic cover off your wheel, add the second rotor, bolt up the caliper, and all you'll have left to sort is how to key the speedo drive so it doesn't spin. : )

Almost sure cbr forks are wider apart than GS. The carriers also are going to leave the caliper too close to the axle to run GS disks, and GS wheel wont bolt CBR disks, those are 6 bolt. You would have to use CBR wheels, disks calipers legs and triples. The problem with that is, the honda triples are thin as paper, I hate working with them. Kat stuff is much better.
Kat forks actually are somehting you can fit quite easily once the machine and welding work is done prior to your taking your bike apart.
1 hour swap with werase643 driving. I have done it in ~2-3 hours by myself, but the key is to have all the work done and done right before you take your bike apart.

The extra disc really is only to prevent fading during races, it doesn't necessarily give you more stopping power as with good pads and braided lines you can brakey the GS500. Heck I've brakied stock before when stopping fast going 90 mph on an empty back road. I was trying to keep up with the fast guys in the motorcycle club and some idiot turned left in front of a whole group of speeding motorcycles. Several people locked up rears the front people locked fronts and me in the back had it worst. The cruiser guys a little further back behind me told me I lifted the rear tire a good 6 inches or so off the ground.

the first mod to my 2nd GS was Hurricane 600 forks and wheel.....since the GS came with no forks

the Hurricane tubes slide right in.
i don't remember if the speedo swapped since it was a racebike

cheep upgrade
but you wheels won't match
and this will stop most who care how pretty their bike is

Cheers for all the feedback peoples, although, now that The Buddha has said that the cbr forks comes with having to do mods to the bike i'v decided (for now at least) to go down the road of .90kg/mm Sonic Springs, while upgrading the brakepads and lines on the stock setup, with HH pads and braided lines, although Kurlon's suggestions seemed okay. . .
I'll keep updating as i go, but again any more info would  be appreciated,

What buddha says is invalid if it contradicts the werase.
Of course you need a werase to english translator to know what he's saying. So good luck with that.

---Hey Buddha, the wiki says that the cbr600's forks go straight into the GS triples?

That was never in question. Yes they do, they are the same size.
The spacing is the question. if too far apart, you have top make up spacers for the disk rotor bolts. Absolutely a horrible idea.
If too close ... whole other set of problems.
That spacing was my concern.
Plus the speedo drive - that not fitting = spacing issue - likely, cos its needed to get it all located right.

i seriously think they slide into the tripples

Hurricane 600 only came with 37mm tubes

Yeah,Okay, now i get what you mean. The wiki says that you have to put washers on the left side to space out the disc, thats about it, which as you said doesn't sound such a sound idea. Thanks for all the feed back

Why on earth do you need a 2nd brake up front?  On mine if you pull the brake lever more than an inch, it locks up...

Gotta agree, new EBC contour rotor, newer style caliper, Daytona radial master, braided line and EBC HH pads, great feel, good initial bite, and no shortage of stopping power.  So far no fade problems either.

One question Helmet: Why?

If you need more braking power, you just need to get the stock brake overhauled cos it isn't working correctly.
If you need more resistance to fade, you must be riding flat out down a mountain with a gorilla on the back. Get a new girlfriend.
If you want your bike to look cool like all the racebikes, trade the GS on a 600 sportbike.
If you just have to spend money, pm me and I'll send you my account details.

But if you just love tinkering for the sake of it, good luck, but don't expect any miracles!

Helmet27

Thanks for all the feedback guys, i see now that most people suggest upgrading stock brakes for extra performance, and for suspension replacing stock springs. And in reply to The Mole, i'm interested in how things work, and in tinkering. Being the son of a motorcycle mad Aircraft maintenance engineer has made me this way :) and in this case it seems curiousity has killed the cat
