 :mad:What is it with people? Think because you have some chicken strips left that your are complete noob? I have about an inch of non worn rubber on the sides and someone decided to tell me I need to stop being a chicken. I'm riding a gs500.. why am I fussed how far I lean over?? I don't get why its such a big deal to people.. I can get round corners how I feel comfortable. 
Current - 1991 Suzuki GS500E choked to 33bhp ( mini spear indicators upfront, engine scoop, 20mm rear suspension increase, iridium sparks, clip on bars and a few other little bits )

That is when you say to the person (if they ride) and how many trees have you put dibs on? big egos belong in a car.
(if they don't have a bike) just laugh and look at him and shake your head.

I have got my bike over quite far but i feel comfortable doing it on corners i know. But i agree with taking your time and doing things at your own pace.

It's not a big deal.  Keep it at a lean angle that you're comfortable with.
It does suggest you're not running the bike to it's full potential which is why you'd get some occasional ragging.
That said you don't say that YOU have 1" chicken strips, you say "my friend" has 1 in chicken strips. :icon_rolleyes:

Don't worry about that, oh yeah and if you put wider tires, I run 140/70-17's and my feet and pegs scrape the ground on occasion but I still have about 1/4" of unused area on the tire so I know I'm maxed out. I've ridden bikes with wider low profile tires and it actually is easier to ride those tires all the way to the edge so don't go worrying about chicken strips they're different on different tire setups.

i scraped my knee the other day on my foot peg but never on the stock tires they are pretty soft and no sharp edges to get cought on. :icon_twisted:

Also probably worth pointing out that having chicken strips is probably an indication that you're actually riding your bike for more than just fun. Your normal everyday commute probably doesn't have many turns where you're really starting to max out on lean. If someone asks you why you have chicken strips, ask them how many miles they've ridden lately. You'll likely find that they're only out tooling around on the weekend and otherwise not riding the bike. If you tell them you go through a tank and a half of gas a week, every week, they'll probably look sheepish and mumble something about not having had a chance to ride much lately and only riding 100 miles in the last couple of months.

I started getting worried about leaning one day and found myself staring at the inside of a turn instead of down the road like I should have been. Fortunately (thanks MSF...) I caught myself in time, managed to get the bike straightened up, and slowed down enough to get through the turn (mostly) without incident. After a few weeks of gradual practice I'm able to now comfortably go through the same curve faster than I was going when I almost crashed. Learn at your own pace.

If i put it down, yes....i think im down to the last little hair on the very very very edge of the tire....And YES they are stock tires with no mods to suspension.  I wont put it down down because my luck would be to catch it and break my pelvis and femur.  But i do hang off pretty well at 110 on a certain sweeper i know very very very very well.  I only push my luck on turns i am super familiar with in very low traffic areas.  Im still scared to put my knee down though.  Roads arent as smooth as tracks....

Oh exactly.  And besides, the aformetioned sweeper is a well-kept section of raised expressway, and its taken only between midnite and 3am durign the week.  Wont see a car for miles. Its not completely safe for me to do it because of all the unmentioned variables, i.e. oil slick, but hey, Its my "squidly" choice.  Flame on.  At least Im not a chicken...ROFL... j/k

How many miles does of extreme cornering does it take to wear down those chicken strips? I ask because I've taken my bike to what I feel is about the maximum it can be leaned a few times, but only on extremely tight decreasing radius corners at about 20 mph. I still have a good inch of chicken strips on my 140 rear tire. I wonder if I just haven't put enough high speed miles on the edges or if the 140's are the wrong shape to go all the way to the edge safely. Either way I guess I'm keeping them strips because I don't get to do many high speed corners.

In Australia we have these things called "round abouts".  Used when multiple intersections meet and keeps traffic flowing without using traffic lights by vehicles traveling in a circle until they exit off.  I hear you Americans are being introduced to them.  Anyway my point being over here if you jump on a big round about you can easily prictise your lean angle simply by staying on the round about and going round and round and round.  Cagers will look at you funny but so what.

For those that have no idea what a round about is just imagine a never ending corner that you can stay in for as long as you want  :D

I agree completely. I think "chicken strips" are completely normal for a bike ridden on the street. It means you're leaving some room for error. I would expect... no, recommend that everyone keep them!

FWIW, with stock suspension, good luck getting to the edge anyway. Well, I dunno, maybe you can if you only weigh 100 lbs. These were my last set of track tires, I touched the pegs a couple of times, and you might be able to see that there's still an unused portion there:



With better springs however, I found out sunday I COULD get all the way to the edge now!  :laugh:  But really, encouraging high lean angles on the street is just DUMB.  :cookoo:

I use the old Stanley Bondo Rasp, the big sucker that will not gob-up.  Put bike on stand in second gear and in a few minutes you gots no chickie strips, no cupping, no tread ;-) .

I have not really put the teh GS through the twisties at any great speed.  My Wing scrapes hard parts before reacing the outer inch of tire and The VTX scrapes sooner than that
