Alright I'm looking for a pair of riding pants. I'm wanting to use them over my regular pants over my work clothes and for my weekend joy riding. I would prefer them be waterproof and still be cool enough to be able to use in the humid south heat. I'm hoping to use the same pair year round but I figure I could warm em up with extra layers. Also about $100 is my upper limit but of course I would prefer as inexpensive as possible without sacrificing too much quality. So far these are intersting ( http://www.jafrum.com/Motorcycle-Gear/Mens-Textile-Motorcycle-Pants/LP2821 )  Obviously the price is great but I am sure of the quality and how hot they would be in the summer.

i dunno either, but you can also check www.motorcyclecloseouts.com

i bought a bunch of stuff there just the other day and they have some good deals on 2008 gear. incidentally i bought some overpants for $80 from them, but i wanted mesh for the hot weather.

Well, if you ever get to the point where you put a price on pain and suffering, and decide that avoiding some is worth spending on gear as opposed to at the emergency room as they scrub road out of your skin with plastic brushes, look into Aerostich gear - it's very well made (in america, by americans), designed to let you ride in work clothes, has many vents for hot weather, and is the best rainsuit I've ever owned - vast quantities of gore-tex.

But even "just pants" blows your tiny budget all to heck.

If I somehow got stuck down where it's really hot and humid, I'd look hard at the "cooling vests" as an underlayer. The way the weather is going, I'm starting to think real hard about getting one even though I live in the Northeast - heck, I even gave up and bought an air conditioner 3 years ago - never used to need one of those, here.

Aerostich has a sale/ closeout section. Lots of pants are 1/2 off, or $115, last I looked.

I have the Joe Rocket Blaster 7.0? overpants, and they're reasonable enough.  They have a zip in rain liner, but they don't really have much venting.  They have nice little full length zippers.  I got them for something in the neighborhood of 100 bones, but might have been a little more.  The last few rides in the 90 deg F heat have in a little warm, although even then once you're moving it's ok.
Take a look at what www.newenough.com has.  It's where I got them.  They have a couple of other overpants as well.

I dont have any riding pants, yes I know its cheaper than skin grafts and medical etc etc.  I really want to get some over pants though.  As far as I know, riding pants are all the same length pretty much right.  Anyone out there have good experience with a particular brand for a short guy like myself, 30x30 jeans. I'm about 5'5''

Some riding pants, like some from Olympia moto sports make their pants able to be hemmed so you could easily adjust them to your height.

For the OP, fieldsheer sells a pair of mesh pants with a removable waterproof liner that are close to your price range.

I bought mine on Ebay for $39 and are worth double. Unfortunately, have never been able to find them again. They are Suzuki branded overpants that are water proof and I wear down here in Florida but with shorts. I don't think anyone could handle wearing two pairs of pants except in Jan Feb.  It Says Genuine Suzuki product and manucfactured by SRS. They have hip protection. Geep sent me some knee pads a few days ago and they fit in very well. Thanks!

I've got the Tourmaster Venture pants and I think they are great ... if you are in temps of < 60o F.  At that point they start to get too hot, since they cut almost all airflow.  Not truly waterproof (groin area is some sort of mesh-like material), but otherwise they do the job.  These are great in the winter though!

When I was working (usually a full-time student), I would bring my work-clothes in my tail-bag and ride in some shorts and a t-shirt -  these things are too hot to wear with 2 pairs of pants, especially if your jacket, gloves, helmet and boots are also warm.

does anyone have any riding jeans?  I've looked at several pairs and I want something that is kinda loose so I can wear them out while running errands, etc when riding the bike but still offer protection.  Something like these...

lK&N unchbox w/ rejet with 140 mains, F-18 flyscreen, truck bed liner black, superbike bars with 3rd eye bar end mirrors, license plate rear turn signals, micro front turn signals

I bought a pair of Power Trip Dakota overpants last year and still haven't worn them. Made of heavy-duty 660 Airtena® nylon outer, 100% waterproof Dry Tech® mid liner, zippered back pockets, full length side zippers. Nice pants and good value in my opinion.

have you tried looking around on kijiji?  I was on an extremely tight budget looking for leather pants for the track.  I found the Joe Rocket pants on NewEnough around the $300 mark, then ended up finding an entire Joe Rocket 2pc leather suit in mint condition cheaper than the pants @ NewEnough.

Fieldsheer mercury pants

Anybody have any experiance with them ? Also DoD are you saying that aerostitch is the most comfortable gear or are you saying that its the only gear you trust to protect you ?

DoD#i

I'm saying it's well built, and well thought out (pockets, vents, etc), and does its job (protective commuting wear over "street clothes") well. Excepting all reports are the the map pocket velcro is a waste of poor design - I've never spent on the map pocket that goes there, so I've never had it part company at highway speeds - but that's what it does, evidently. Get a tank bag if you need a map pocket.

If I KNEW I was going to crash (yet somehow could not just not ride that day) I'd generally prefer to be in leathers. On nice days when I didn't need to be in "normal" clothes I'd quite happily ride in in leathers (two piece) and wear my leather pants at work, but I was working in a pretty low-key office. Nowadays I walk to work, so that's less of an issue. "Leather shrinkage" (actually middle-age spread, of course) is another issue, but let's not go there, other than to say I can still manage the 'stich and leather jacket from the same era, but need to lose a Dunlop before the leather pants are a viable option again, and I don't want to buy fat pants, thanks.

The day I decided to spend about as much as I spent on my first motorcycle on a 'stich (roadcrafter, all there was in those days) was the day I rode 4 hours through the rain, in leathers and a "rain suit", so-called, which proceeded to leak at every single seam, leaving no seam un-leaked. My leathers picked up about 40 lbs of water and I picked up a somewhat hazardous game of tag with hypothermia while riding.

I ride year round, and used these since August of 08.

They worked great in the cold with the liners in and were waterproof in the rain (what we had).  I've taken the liners out since it's starting to warm up, and still use them over my jeans.  It's starting to get in the hi 80's now, so I might just get some riding jeans for the daytime.

Fieldsheer mercury pants

Here's a link for reviews and a slightly cheaper price:

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/1/40/14362/ITEM/Fieldsheer-Mercury-Pants.aspx

I have these because I wanted 1 pants for all seasons:
http://www.newenough.com/protective_apparel/mesh_jackets_and_pants/first_gear/ht_air_2_mesh_motorcycle_overpants.html

The protection, warmth and waterproofing is excellent. It hasn't gotten hot enough to test out the other features yet. The only complaints I have are they are bulky and are pain to take on and off .

woodchuck5515

Thanks for the link for the cheaper pants but they only have black medium in stock and i'm looking for xl probably in the silver color so i can be more visible and a bit cooler in the heat. Also my AMA membership gets me a 10% discount at bike bandit so it works out. Let me know how those first gear pants workout for ya. They seem versatile but the from the reviews on the site it seems the supplied armor is woefully lacking which doesn't seem right for a $180 dollar pant but that could be upgrade easily enough.

Rickyz80

looks like those mercury pants are for the winter man.  I don't know how well they'll hold up in the heat.  But best of luck to you with that.  And let us know if they are good for the summer.  I'm looking around for some over pants myself for riding season! Thanks!

Bluesmudge

I have the black mercury pants. I bought them for winter and wet weather riding. However, they are the most protective pair of paints I own so I try to wear them no matter what. If sized right, with the liner out, they work great as overpants, but for colder riding with the liner its really too snug. If thats what you want try ordering a size up.
I've worn them in the high 70's (which feels pretty warm in Seattle) with the thigh vents open they are very comfortable, especially when moving. I'm sure in 80+ degree weather you would start to suffer in stop and go traffic.

Make sure you set the knee pad location for the riding position, not standing position -- I made that mistake and found myself very uncomfortable. The protection these pants provide is outstanding. You won't have to worry about your knees.

My only complaint is that they don't work as an overpant with the liner and the fabric used for the butt seems pretty slippery so I find myself sliding into the tank on steep downhills.

I highly recommend these pants (and I paid full retail!), but you might want to look at fieldsheer's mesh equivalent if you plan to do a lot of summer riding.
