07 Fuel Tank on a 93

Hello everyone,

I am a new rider who ran out and bought a 93 gs with low miles after hearing good things about learning on these bikes.  Unfortunately, due to my not really knowing at the time what to look for when buying a used bike, I have been spending more time in the garage than on the road.  However, this forum has proved to be a great resource, thank you to all of you who provide questions and answers here.  It really gave me the confidence to do work on the bike myself.

Okay, so one of the problems with the bike was its gas tank was all rusted out, and on top of that it appears like the previous owner attempted to reline it himself.  The liner was peeling and flaking off all over the place, and when working on the carburetors I found a bunch of chips of it in the float bowls.  I attempted to use a Kreem kit on the old tank, but the old liner did not dissolve in the phosphoric acid, and I really didn't enjoy doing that kind of work anyway.  To get around this, the next day I jumped on ebay and grabbed the first gs500 tank I could find, which ended up being from an 07.  I knew that this would probably not be an exact fit, but I don't have much time for working on the bike during the week, and I wanted to do something about the fuel tank quickly!

I got the tank yesterday, and bolted it on this morning.  It kind of fits, but there are a few millimeters of play up and down and side to side in the front end of the tank.  If others have done this, would you mind sharing how you mounted the tank?

Thanks!
-Nick

Thanks for the responses!

A search of my garage floor has revealed what are probably the missing spacers.  I'll try those out later today.

Your seat will also go up the front of the tank if you still have the stock 93 seat.

Yeah...

I got the tank on and put the bike all back together.  Everything fits decent enough except there are no grommets for the plastic side pieces on the new tank.  I figure I can jury-rig the side pieces to stay on better in the future, but right now I have bigger problems as the bike is not starting.  The tank sure doesn't move around anymore with those spacers in place though!

Trust me, it fits. Thats how my 90 started its transformation, no its a full on 05 lookalike minus the nice paintjob. Oh, and with the older seat on a new tank you will have the front of the seat riding up the tank. Eventually it will start wearing at the paint of you could just cut that triangle off and restretch the material and staple.
