so i am looking at getting an ipod.  i have decided to either get an ipod touch or the 120g video.  the big thing for me is the price and storage capacity. i can get a video pod with 120g for under 300 or a 16g touch for about 300.  as far as i can tell the only real difference is that the touch is able to connect to the inter-net alone and not through a computer.  so i will list what i want, what i like and whatever i can think of and hopefully you guys can help me with my decision.. i want your guys thoughts.

i WANT

lots of storage room(this is prolly #1 for video)
video(movies or tv shows and youtube
audio
radio
games(solitaire and simple games)
loud
good sound
good battery life
be able to attach to other devises such as hdtv
FREE content

i would LIKE to have

internet
upgradeable storage
kewl factor
reliability
sale or save money

i am caught on the price vs storage.  the touch is still very expensive.  so if you guys have either devise or even better both let me know what you think

thx

the touch is a lot of money for somethign your just gonna drop and break
get the normal one, do you really need to google stuff on a 3 inch screen?

if you want a ultra portable computer get a dell mini 9, if you want an ipod just get an ipod

bucks1605

I've had several ipods over the years, my current being a touch. I've had a mini, and for me the clicker wheel thing was a pain in the a$$. I really like the ease of use of the touch, on the other hand one of my roommates hates it.  So it's really personal preference I guess.

In terms of video, you can't really compare the 120 gig to the touch. I don't watch many vids on it, but I have before and its nice quality/sound etc.

Free content/games is where the touch shines for me. With a little research you can find all you need to know about "unlocking" a touch, which will introduce you to tons of free content. Some of the games are unbelievable, blows the 120 gig out of the water.

I got a DLO Jam Jacket for my touch and a screen protector and those work very well. I've dropped it on a few occasions w/o any damage, however, I'm usually pretty careful with it. The Jam Jacket provides good grip for holding.

If I were you, I'd go with a touch. Mine is the original 8 gig model and I've only filled it with 3 gigs of music. And I hardly listen to 70% of it, I couldn't imagine filling 120 gigs!

You're not going to realistically use the internet on a touch.  If you want storage and video, 120 gigs goes a lot further than 16.  You haven't mentioned the Zune, which you might also want to consider - it has limited wireless capabilities.

Personally, I own a blackberry as my phone, and a creative zen vision M for mp3.  the zen has lasted forever, has twice the space of a current touch, and FM radio.  I wouldn't buy a touch at 1/3 the price.

Iskin makes great protective cases for all ipod/iphone products.  I've dropped my iphone and 3g multiple times without a problem.

Get the touch, blows a regular ipod out of the water and some of the games available for it are amazing.

ohgood

120Gb is allot of anything. movies, music, whatever, that's a ton of media...... overkill maybe?

i'd go for the iphone out of those two (ok, iphone wasn't listed) choices. it does everything you wanted.

given a fillintheblank choice- i'd get a HTC G1 or similar phone. i've been using a Sony Ericsson w300i for a couple years now (occasionally one of the kids kills a phone and I use a go phone till craigslist finds another for me!) and am quite happy with what can be fit on a 2Gb MicroSD card. Yes, 2Gb.

If you're going for a media device, make sure it has a built in radio reciever. I use that portion of it at work when I'm tired of whatever is on my playlist that day.

Can't watch movies all the time, and switching to yet another device to take a call sucks  ! Hence me recommendation for an all-in-one. Internet on a phone may suck, but at least you can google whatever, map whatever, and use built in GPS functions. All in one devices trump carrying/losing stuff ;)

And the zunes are DRM'd to hell and back... suckage. Not to mention you have to use THEIR software in order to do anything with it. Yuck. Expect to see zune die in the next year or three. Either way, dead. :)

never thought of the zune, i will have to research that.

If you're researching, look at SanDisk; I've had nothing but good luck with their players (reliable, inexpensive, good sound quality).  I currently have a Clip, as I like minimal and rugged; my hubby has one of their previous-gen vid and music portable players, and it's also been great.  I have a browser on my phone, which I already think is a bit much; I don't want one on my playah.

Ive bought my wife both a sandisk and an RCA and she loved both of those great sound out of both and alot cheaper.  a friend of hers has an ipod and hates it she has a hell of a time putting music on and taking music off her ipod she said she wishes she had bought a sandisk or zune instead of her ipod.

Get the touch. I have one and love it. I use it to look up GSTWIN all the time. Anytime I go anywhere there's a router it automatically logs on (providing I've been there before) so I go to places like Starbucks or Safeway and cruise the web.
The three best things about the screen are
1. Its not pressure sensitive it registers finger placement by sensing the electric current in our bodies (I'm pretty sure anyways). The only problem is finding a stylus that registers well.
2. The screen size is the largest you would want to go before carrying in the pocket becomes a real annoyance. Resolution is not HD of course but movies look great.
3. The screen is multi-touch. To zoom in you place two fingers onto the screen and move them away from each other. To zoom out you do the opposite. (resembles the pinching motion)
As for the drive size I have the 16GB; the 4.8GB being used consist of 40 full albums, 3-500MB videos, and the rest in apps.
The hard drive is solid state meaning zero (0) moving parts.
The chip used for WiFi support (Broadcom BCM4325) has Bluetooth and FM Radio support as well BUT Apple neither utilizes these abilities nor mentions their existence. The Bluetooth is most likely being used for the Nike feature but Apple refers to the frequencies used as "unspecified frequencies". FM isn't used at all as far as I know.
Hope this helps atleast a little.  :thumb:

Here is another idea! I really enjoy using my PSP for well one Gaming can't get any better they have some of the best titles, has a good wi-fi and you can get T-mobile hot spots as well, Can watch movies and do music. Just have to do memory cards and price an original PSP at Game Stop is $129!

Now I also have a fifth generation 30g Ipod video which I will never trade up to a newer generation. Why because the newer generations doesn't allow you to use many third party video conversion. I.E. I got a cord off of Ebay that hooks into the Ipod and my TV which allows me to watch movies or Pod Cast on my big screen, I also have a phillips surrond sound that has the Ipod dock and I can control it with the remote and listen to music or do movies from the couch, the other thing I have is a portable dvd sized console that the ipod connects into and I can watch movies on a bigger screen wherever I am. With the newer generations I found out works with none of this! Apple has now put software on the IPOD that will only use their remote system that costs sixty bucks. The cord from ebay $2 and the portable device $45.

My other device I have is the Ipod shuffle 1gig. Now I love this little thing one it is Mary proof it has been washed and dried twice and still works! Also, dropped off my GS at 25mph in the subdivision only way I knew it came off the music stopped. Now that is durable! It also has an incredible battery life I think I charge it once maybe twice a month although I constatnly forget to turn it off once u pull out the earphones it goes into sleep mode. This is used almost exclusively on the GS when riding long trips ( I know I know shouldn't listen while riding but it cuts down on headaches over hearing the dull drone of I-4) this is because I can handle losing $50 bucks on the road but if my Ipod video went down I-4 I'd surely cry. But, is only good for music cause it has no screen.

Just some ideas!

The only calls you can make with an ipod touch is voip using vonage or some other over-internet calling company using the headphone/microphone combo.
As far as HAVING to use iTunes, you don't. Well, not for transfers. For the initial setup its required as well as for viewing or downloading apps/games from iTunes store. I hate the program as well, I still use MediaMonkey when I can.

Whatever you do, don't buy anything until Wednesday, its apple's annual ipod event. You will be able to get what is available now much cheaper after Wednesday, or be able to buy something completely new and awesome. At the very least you will be able to get a 32GB ipod touch for the price of a 16gb today.
