hey, when i start the bike in neutral it starts, cramps a little and then dies down..  But when i start it and keep giving it throttle then it does not. what is the problem?

ohgood

did you use the choke ?

is your idle set right ? (set once warm)

sounds like a lean condition.

Prolly not dirt in the carbs.
If it does that you described for ~5 mins and then it runs great till you shut it off ... that = tight valves.
Cool.

Yeah once i start riding it for a couple of minutes then everything else seems to work fine.. Just the startup is the problem.....

HOW DO I FIX TIGHT VALVES?

Thanks man

NF11624

Valve adjustment - check a manual or this website for instructions.  Supposedly not too hard - as long as you can get the screws out... I couldn't (damn those soft POS screws).  Since I have no problems (I have babied my GS and been lucky) I will figure something out at the next interval.  But enough about my GS...

Basically you will need to measure your valve clearances and get appropriate shims from somewhere (ebay, dealer, gstwinner, etc...).  Then you will have to figure out a way to get the old shims out and the new ones in.

Best of luck

I bought a valve shim removal tool on ebay for $15  there is a link to a digital download manual for the gs500 that I posted on here awhile back. http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=46110.0
good luck.  and remember, any nut, bolt or fastener on this bike is gonna be metric!

Dont get me wrong ... it can be lean as well, and have dirt in the carb too. Nothing we said excludes any of the rest.
Rejet, clean etc after adjusting valves.
