This is the bike I was asking about in a previous thread.

I went by the shop today but he wasn't there - instead a friend was watching the shop. He knew nothing about the bike.

He wants 1100 for it but I think I can probably negotiate that. 12k miles or so, looks to be a 1989 GS500. The sticker/sign said 86 but that apparently isn't possible.

It's got the clip-on handlebars and the side fairings are missing (on the back, where it would say "GS500".

If anyone can tell me what this bike is, exactly, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!!

89' was the only year the came from the factory with clipons.  But, he could have added them himself

That's an 89...thats one of the paint schemes available in 89 ( I had the Black-Red-Silver of that year myself..). Factory windscreen and chin spoiler too...

Clipons could show up on a 90 as leftovers.

Does he have the tail plastics?

That's definitely one of the best color schemes you can get on a GS. Normally you can find plenty of spare side covers on here, but with that color tank I'd want to make sure I found the right ones so I didn't have to repaint the bike!

Roadstergal

$1100?  20 years old, 12K miles, plastic missing, condition unknown but looking rough... even if that comes with a free blowjob, it's way too high.

ya, 12,000 my ass. i'll bet it 72,000. that thing looks like hell. i'd offer $500 or walk away. that much rust, those many years, and no telling the real miles, if it's the original engine.

bah- buy from individuals. riders. my 2 cents. :)

Doesnt look too bad... I agree w/ about $500 cash. if not, you can find one much better for $1k  :thumb:

Bust them up a bit for having it marked wrong.. they dont even know what it is... LOL

Well, in all fairness, this guy that's selling it owns the shop...a motorcycle repair shop.

I'm not sure about the side pieces but I do know that he started it up and it sounded really good. A little smoke but he had the choke on so yeah...

I don't think he's out to screw anybody, I just think he's overrating it. Either way, I'll offer him less. I was thinking 800.

psyber_0ptix

i got my 92 with 16k on the clock for 900 bux.

it had cracked rear plastics and brand new tires.

I'm not sure I'd even pay $500 for that...  that bike's is serious need of an overhaul.

The miles are believable...

I have a 1991 VX800 (one of 2...other has 37k on it...) with 3k on it in my garage . I've bought  15 + year old bikes with under 3k on them. Semi common in the Northeast here... You buy it-it's new to you and so maybe is riding...put 1500-3000 miles on it in a summer... let it sit the winter... it's not as new or you lose interest and only put a few hundred on it each summer for a few years..( or you store it badly...never get it running  and let it sit..).

That being said-$1100 is high for what it is..( condition...).

damn dude, rare tank paint, rare chin guard, 89 clipons,  perhaps some rust

if you like a project, why not. I'd love to turn that bike into something fun....

Rusted ass chain - replace. Sprockets too most likely. Tacho looks like it's just sitting there so yeah maybe a replaced speedo too to hide the real miles.

Engine blowing smoke.... for mine... strike, you're out. I ain't no expert on such things, but with the possibility of a shot engine needing work regardless how it sounds, no way.

Even if he is a Repair Man... and what's with those stains on the frame. Was this thing a flood salvage?

Kijona...Look at the Ones Baltimore GS posted in your other thread. The Blue 91 (he calls it a 93 but it's 91 bodywork/paint ) for  $900 is a decent deal...(it looks to be in nice condition....if its as nice as it looks it's looks that'd be my pick).

Psyber- I think he meant he thinks the speedo was changed....not that he is telliing him to swap the  speedo...

Mister,
Chains rust , think tires....consumables...stuff you'll replace  sooner or later anyway (Can't always knock money off for those but you can try)...

Smoking engine...yeah walk away unless it's a steal and you  can fix it or replace it easily and or cheaply.

Tach ...The rubber grommet things they sit in shrink up/distort  and allow movement.

The stains....that just looks dirty grimey- the frame will probably clean up really nice believe it or not.  I doubt it's a flood bike...

The Miles... who knows if it was done or not but the miles are believable.

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/mcy/1421519079.html

This bike ( the one mentioned above ) has 17k on it... 2 years difference...is he a pulling a scam too? yeah his bike is in nice shape ( all in how it's stored and cared for....)
I have a 92 Seca 2 with 19k on it in very nice shape cosmetically... I have a 93 Seca 2 with 10k on it that was shown little love cosmetically ( it's not horrible just not super pretty). The 93 needed a good cleaning...had stains on the frame...
The 92 has twice the miles  and looks twice as good.... The 93's miles are legit....

Anyway

Kijona....lots better examples out there to buy....

Thanks a lot guys. Yeah, I kinda figured he didn't want to sell the bike that bad else he'd have called me back after I left 2 messages for him. Probably just as well.

I'm in contact with the guy. He's probably young, sounds like it. I'm not too sure if I'm even going to be able to test ride it. He says the tire's shot and bad battery etc.
