I don't know if any of remember recently that I broke a stud off the engine while putting my oil filter cover back on.

Well, fast forward 1 week and $100 later and I had a local shop fix it. I put a filter in, got the gasket on and put the cover back on, "hand" tightened all 3 bolts and poured a couple of qts oil in (still had some from previously and dipstick read full) and started it up to run a minute - NO LEAK!!! HOORAY!!

Now, here's my new problem, on each qt of oil, there is a foil cap under the plastic cap, on the first qt I just poked my finger in it and to the side to open it, poured the oil and moved to the next qt. I don't know what I was thinking because this one, I took a tool, popped the foil cover up and peeled the whole cover off and threw it away, then poured that qt in. When I went back and checked out the 1st qt, I didn't see the foil cover hanging to the side - it came off - and I'm pretty sure it poured into the crankcase........

I'm worried now since I ran the bike with it in there, but it ran normal for the ten minutes I had it running to heat it up and burn the oil off the exhaust.
Hopefully I can check tomorrow morning in the dipstick opening and can fish it out that way.
Now, my question is, (obviously I'm planning on draining the oil, taking the crankcase cover off, and trying to get it out if I can't fish it out through the dipstick) but if I ran the engine for that amount of time, would it have "transferred" to another part of the engine that will be more difficult to get out? Where should I look if it's not immediately visible when I get the cover off?

THIS IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE OIL CHANGE I'VE EVER DONE.... close to $200 as of now....

Any help is appreciated guys!

soft metal will  be chewed up by the engine and caught in the filter. that's what it's there for. I recommend another oil change and filter though! Maybe run a quart through to rinse pieces.

Piece of paper/plastic, you kidding me ... I have had a whole crank full of shattered magnet and coil pieces and it lived to tell about it.
The foil ... lets see, it would first have been shredded by the primary and clutch basket gears.
That will have got it crammed into the clutch plates and turned it into particulate deposit.
The bits that dis escape will end up in the pan, whete it will never get through the fine mesh oil pick up to get to the pump.
If it did ... then its fine enough to do nothing. I have fished out lacquer and gasket material from oil pans before ... a foil bit will be nothing.
Cool.

so it will get chewed up and be on the outside, or inside of the oil filter?

is it not smart to ride the bike at all?

Your foil/plastic likely to be on the under side of the pump pick up in the pan. Wont do nothing No worries. Dont go pulling the pan etc etc.

Yea mine ... I drained oil 3 times 100 miles apart and that was it.

Cable - I have use for several of em. I may have ... or not yet. Sorry dont mean to sound like an ass. It is getting to me with a 6yr old screaming after having pulled a tooth. Anyway, I am too wore out to think.

:icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol: Sorry but this is just too funny. Reminds me of myself, who's good at turning a simple 1/2 hr task into a huge all-day project. If you want it done right, you've got to do it yourself, right?

Hmm...I hope it works out for you. Are you at UF or in Atlanta? If you're in G'ville, then stop by. Anyhow, I DO have a question for the Buddha...I haven't changed my oil in over a year and I STILL have close to 2000 or so miles on the oil. Should I change it anyway even though the bike has not been giving me any problems? Also, is it normal for the GS to lose some oil over time? Let me know. Thanks!

The Buddha

Oil loss - yes.
Trouble from not changing oil. Yes, right about 5 miles before it seizes ... it will start making a clicking sound from the bottom end. Changing the oil them wont make any difference.

We constantly dump out oil that is good for a few 100-1000+ ... The alternative is much much worse.

1 year and 2K, maybe OK to run till spring, but no biggie if you change now. Level and quality are important, but no way to know quality really.

Cool.
