Note to self: BUY RIDING BOOTS!!!

I always wore my MX boots when riding and racing (obviously). They saved me a few broken ankles for sure. I have to break my bad habit of just throwing on my light hiking boots.
I guess my problem is I payed 1,500 for my bike and if i wear full gear all in the brands i want, i will be WEARING the cost of my bike, 1/3 of that on my head alone!

Then wear full gear in the brands you feel more financially comfortable with - you might be able to Afford a $700 pair of boots but feel more $ Comfy in a $199 pair, so buy the $199 pair. Wearing no gear (bar helmet) cause you don't feel right about spending big bucks for expensive gear is like "no gear unless it's pricey gear" self defeating.

I don't wear AGATT.  :o

Weekend rides, yes. But it's not practical to wear to work - we don't have storage I can use and work is mobile and I never know where I will be so cannot leave change of clothes, etc. at work. So I ride to work in my work gear - which means no riding pants or boots, just work pants and steelcapped boots. And short weekend jaunts in the city at city-traffic speeds I just wear my hiking boots and jeans.

Gloves and jacket all the time, yes. Just my legs/feet gear changes.

Hmm, yes, i can say it's not practical for us to get full geared all the time.--to the work, ok, there are social reasons too...
And when i had that small honda cub i used to say to myself: It doesn't worth to pay all this money for pants, boots etc. Just a helmet and ok...
But after all the years i'm riding, i have noticed that all the accidents that happened to me were in the cities, with traffic, with cars around and people walking around too and with low speeds...and i have never had an accident outside the city. We are so closely to cars and drivers every day... so many people and so many mistakes on roads.

Really, i don't feel comfortable when i'm thinking that the right thing is to get dressed like an astronaut--just for a brief trip in town, just for a coffee. And usually, i don't do the right... In the accident i posted i must say i had boots and helmets but no jacket and gloves...why? because it was hot outside and i couldn't stand my jacket.:dunno_white:
But i should have bought a summer jacket.. :icon_rolleyes: How lucky i was not to see my body skiing on the asphalt... :embarrassed:

WTF you mean female drivers can't drive! JB thaks for sticking up! Most of the time it is male drivers I've had a difficult time with. TBH the worst is SUVs with the stick people on the back get away far away! These days distractions are across the board men and women.

I always wear my boots now due to an incident I had at a stop light. The one day I didn't wear my boots had my pants, jacket, helmet and was in a hurry what is the worse that could happen. Three torn ligaments in my ankle that resulted in six weeks of crutches.

I've had a bone contusion before on my right elbow. A horse kicked me. NO fun at all!

It is good they're making Motorcycle boots a little more fashionable nowadays. Something you can wear on the bike and wear to the shops.

i like industrial style boots.. so i got the Johnny Reb 'Rascal'

http://www.aussiebiker.com.au/images/tcrascallg2.jpg

and i CAN wear them to the shops.. plus the upper leather cross strap has already taken the sting out of a stick that flicked up from the vehicle in front of me.. the lacing would have done some padding anyway but i like the idea of an extra layer of leather across bottom of my shin.

and i have yet to have the workboot style treadpattern slip on anything!

I almost always wear my TCX Competizione boots. Almost, as above 35-40C in the summer they become unbearable for all day use. I crashed in them, but the main thing is they are much more comfortable to change gear, hold the bike upright when sliding on loose gravel roads, etc. Boots are definitely worth spending on, just like gloves or a good helmet.

Glad you made it without getting hurt too much.

Currently have these. I wanted something that wouldn't look too strange on a cruiser when that was an option for the future.

Looking forward to a pair of these now that I don't see myself on a cruiser anytime soon.

Bit off the boots things, but I'd thought I share.

I went down to the shops to return some DVDs. Coldish autumn evening, helmet, jacket (cause it was cold) and gloves, denmin shots and runners. Made it down there and forgot one of the dvds. made home and then went back and returned the disc. On the way home, red lights and stopped traffic in front of me about 60 meters away, doing about 40 kph in a 80 zone due to slowing down for stopping.  Next thing I see is a head light 4 feet off my rear tyre. Next I feel is a massive boot up the arse and I'm bouncing down the road on my head.

I remember sliding on my back past the stopped cars and rolling of the side of the road. My right ankle was busted and had big chunks missing from it, road rash all up my right shin, the rest was covered by the jacket, helmet and gloves. Found out whilst the ambos had me on the spine board, that he was drunk and apparently did see me . 5 times over the legal limit, I'm surprised he got the key in the ignition to start it.

Back is still buggered, ankle still buggered, and constant pain in the neck. Would've been heaps worse, no skin on my back would be there, nor on the back of my head. Must admit the peth whistle was the best trip I ever had.

Hence I ride covered from head to toe in what ever I can afford.
If you see a drunk behind the wheel, kick them in the balls from me.

I have my full size boots on most days now due to the colder weather.

While shuffling forward after filling my tank last week (to let a car in to fill up), my foot slipped on some spilt diesel and the bike came down on top of me, pinning my leg and trapping me next to the fuel pumps.  An observant chap jumped out of a car and found someone else to help pull the bike off me.  Thankfully no scrapes or bruises on me at all.   :thumb: :woohoo:

So, whatever boots you've got on, be careful what you're standing on!

And now that about a foot of snow has fallen over the weekend, I guess that's the bike out of action for a few days.

I didn't even know they made $700 boots! There's no reason to go crazy with gear. Once you hit a certain price you start paying more for features and comfort than you do safety. Any jacket that has shoulder and elbow pads, and decently abrasion reisitent elbows and shoulders, along with a back pad is sufficient. You don't need the $600 leather jacket with bright colors and suzuki logos all over it. As long as your boots have a stiff ankle, some guards on the ankles, and maybe one on the shin you'll be fine. Toe sliders and replacable guards are all convenience. Helmets do the same thing. Get something that's certified for safe street use and fits comfortably. The rest of the money you put into it is usually going towards a paint job, vents, being lighter, possibly quieter. Those are all things that are nice, but nothing that should keep you from buying gear just because you think you need a certain name brand or look to it. Buying used is always a good option too, except for helmets. I bought my sidi boots from someone on here for $50 shipped and I couldn't be happier with them. I wouldn't trade them for all the timberlands in the world that I see people out here riding in.

I agree... :thumb:
I also believe that gear comfort=safety. It's worth paying some extra money as to feel comfortable. When you are uncomfortable on bike with something(for example  you feel your pants are too tight--maybe they are not well designed, missing stretch panels etc or bad ventilation...) your cannot concentrate well on road...

Once i rode in a trip with some blue jeans very tight on my body and i got tired and nervous too...bad experience... :dunno_white:

I agree with that as well. My previous post was just getting a little long so I figured I'd just stop where it was.

wow glad your ok. what is a 'dent' from your leg bone?

i am still going to roll these though

getting your foot/ankle crushed is no fun, pf flyeres may stay on and survive 10 ft of pavement, but your feet will still be crushed and bruised.

friend, those are worthless unless you're standing next to a motorcycle posing. i've seen them fly right off, and the poser wondered why his feet were no longer enjoying skin. toss them ! toss them now !

if you're going to buy boots, buy boots that will protect your feet, ankles, calves, and will actually STAY ON in a sliding crash.

you have to remember a single layer of leather -might- be enough to save your skin and bones, but leather, covered by plastic wear pads, covered by slippery metal/plastic again is a much better alternative. a $300 pair of boots is incredibly cheap compared to any kind of orthopedic work !

to the OP:

i would put those boots on their own shelf in the garage. all to themselves, as a reminder of what can happen in an instant. give em a little rub every day on your way out. oh, and hey, (yahooooo!) it's new gear time ! weeeeeeee
