Not much of a story regarding the crash, and Taarna and I are both fine. I just need to get a new mirror and bars and figure out an electrical issue. After the incident, I learned that the turn signal and high beam indicator lamps on the instrument panel and my turn signals have stopped working. If any of you folks have any ideas as to where a good place to start troubleshooting, I'm all ears. If it matters, I was running mirrors with integrated turn signals, and in the crash, the right mirror/signal was torn off.

Here's a before pic (I didn't get an after):

Did a fuse get blown from ripped wires? And what kind of turn signal relay do you have? A thermal relay needs all 4 signals and sometimes the indicator light to work.

I put the stock front signals back on after I got back to the shop following the crash, and that was when I realized that they didn't work. I used hand signals on the ride back home. I don't know specifics about the relay either; I just know that it is whatever came stock on the '04 GS500F. I'm away from the bike and won't be able to work on it for a few weeks, so I'm just taking notes at the moment. I'll check the fuse when I get down there again, and I'm open to more ideas.

If the bike is running, and other lights are working, it isn't the fuse..... Unless someone added one along the way.

Check the wiring diagram in the wiki.

The bike ran (I rode it home after introducing it to the blacktop), and all other parts of the electrical system seemed to be working fine. Only issues are the two indicator lights and the turn signals. I'll check the wiki, and update this with what I find out when I get to work on the bike again in a few weeks. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Also, if anyone has a good source for affordable (on an undergraduate student's budget) bright, small short stalk turn signals, handlebars with near stock riding position, and good looking mirrors, let me know. These integrated turn signal mirrors from ebay were kind of a let down.

Just thought about it- does your high beam still work? I know you said the indicator light was out. Just thinking maybe your switch cluster is broken, not the lights.

The high beam does work, the indicator light for the high beam does not.

So, the neutral light works to and the oil light. That would make three so it is the high beam indicator only that is out? thinking that since there is no turn signal to replace it that could be the problem.

I got a couple of LED blinkers laying around for free if you want them. Not the best but will work in a bind. This is what it looked like on the bike. Just not quite as shiny!

Sounds like a couple wires got pinched around the steering column. Probably on the left side since the handle bard would have been forced into a hard left when it fell on the right side.
Follow the wires back from the left hand turn signal switch and you'll probably see something not quite right.

Neutral and oil dash indicator lights work. High beam and turn signal dash indicators do not. That makes two that work and two that don't. None of the turn signals work either. If they're just gathering dust, I'll be happy to put the LED indicators to use; I just need to get Taarna safe and legal again so I can ride. I'll fix her up nice as money permits.

There's no connection between the high beam light and the indicators, they're seperate problems. Check for wires loose under the instruments, then check the high beam warning bulb. If none of the indicators are working, then its the indicator relay or a connection to or from the relay or associated wiring up to the handlebar switch, or the switch itself. The relay has a blue and orange wire, you could try pulling them off the relay, connecting them together and trying the switch. The indicators should light up but not flash. If that happens, the problem is the relay. If they don't light, its something else.
Note that the indicators will work normally even if the warning light has a blown bulb.

This might help. Note that we do not have a passing switch.

Check for continuity in your indicator wires, There are bullet style connectors on wires that prolly go on the right side of the steering head and under the tank on the right side. I've had strange problems in the past with having like one wire pulled out, and none of the lights working and such.

PM me your info and I will get them out. Sorry, about the shape but they do work. Your back ones aren't LED right. If your just hooking up two you don't gotta worry about the load balancers and all that stuff! LEDs gave me nightmares which is why I went back to incandescent!

Actually a low/no load flasher relay from a parts store should fix the flashing rate. Or one from superbrightleds.com if you plan on replacing a couple indicator lights anyway.

PM sent. I had stockers in the rear when I was running the mirrors with integrated LED signals. The flash rate was faster, but it wasn't a huge difference. Suggestions for affordable handlebars that mimic the riding position of the stock bars would be welcome too, as I'm pretty sure mine are bent.

Toogoofy317

When I put these on Flick first I didn't have to do anything YMMV. Do, a search I thought someone had posted up that they found some for like $20 superbars or something like that. Can't remember

Update:
Got back to where Taarna has been staying last night and started troubleshooting the electrical system. So far, I've only found a break in the black/white high beam warning light. I've checked the wiring from the instruments to the main harness and from the turn signal/headlight dimmer switch to the main harness for continuity, and identified no faults. This leads me to believe that the problem is somewhere else (i.e., the main harness). After reinstalling the turn signal/headlight dimmer switch though, I'm finding that the headlight doesn't function properly (doesn't stay lit unless switch is set between high and low positions). When the switch is off the bars, the headlight works fine.  :technical:
If anyone has any more advice, I'm open to it. Also, a big thanks to adidasguy for posting the wiring diagram, it's come in handy a few times already.

While I'm sharing, I'll go ahead and tell you all of today's adventure. I had to pull the tank to access the harness connectors, but my tank had roughly four gallons of fuel in it, making an awkward task even more so. My solution was to empty the tank into a gas can by siphoning the fuel. I accidentally swallowed a bit of gas around 13:30, and even after rinsing my mouth out, drinking plenty of water, and eating dinner, my burps still smell and taste like fuel. Good times.

Update:
The problem with the turn signals and turn signal indicator lamp came down to the turn signal flasher. Once I found it, the plastic case was visibly deformed and it smelled like burnt electrical stuff. Replaced it with a part in the shop, and it all works.  :woohoo:

Also got my brake light flasher installed properly. :)

The headlight dimmer switch is still acting up, and the high beam indicator lamp won't illuminate despite the repair made to the break in the wire (which does have continuity). The bulb is functional.

In other news, I no longer taste/smell gas when I belch.

Final Update:
She's all fixed as of 4:30 this afternoon. Dead battery though, so that's on the charger and I haven't had a chance to ride. Tomorrow though, many miles will be ridden.
