Hey everyone,

I'm after some advice on good roads around the Gold Coast hinterland area, i'm going on a ride with dad and some of his mates from work down to the gold coast hinterland.

I'm really thinking i'll be shown up quite badly with the guys that are going down (0ne of the guys has a cruiser that he manages to get so far down that the frame scrapes and he uses every possible bit of tyre  :o ), but should be good fun anyway  :thumb:

Now they all know where they are going (in terms of good roads and so on), but i was wondering if there were any roads i should really look at going on, because up in Gladstone, we really don't have much in the way of nice roads so i'm really keen to hit up some good ones lol.

Cheers,

There is heaps of good roads in the Gold Coast hinterland. Mister will know them all. If you head down over the border to Murwillumbah there is some great roads. We should catch up for a ride as it is near Mister and I.

Just looking on google maps, there looks like so pretty awesome roads, depending on surface quality anyway.

dodging pot holes becomes the norm when you're up in CQ lol.

I'll keep you posted on what the go is with the ride cus it'd be great to catch up for a ride with some fellow GS riders. Not many up where i am, well none on here that i've found anyway

Yep, I know almost all of them.  :icon_mrgreen:

BTW, Twisted and any other Brisvegas riders... this Sunday 27th March I am leading a ride. Leaving Yamanto Maccas at 8am Sharp. Heading to Moogerah Dam, then little ridden roads to Rathdowney. Then unknown roads to Beaudesert for lunch. It's an awesome ride if I do say so myself.

Care to share the names of some? lol  :tongue2:

I don't think i'll be down until may, but give me some more practice time considering i've only been road riding alone since December, with most of that just being commuting cus there are no nice twisties where i am.
Well actually thats a bit of a lie, there is one possibly somewhat ok road that takes about 3min to get through when having a bit of fun, but 4x4 owners dont understand the whole 'stay on correct side of the road' principle....

Do you have any rules on your rides?

Do you have any rules on your rides?

Most definitely yes...

- No-one goes past the ride leader Unless previous permission has been given.
- All corner markers to remain in position until signaled to move on by the Tail End Charlie
- Ride your own ride at a pace you feel comfortable with - within the pace set by the ride leader
- Anyone leaving the ride to please notify the Ride Leader or Tail End Charlie

There are also the rules that people follow without reminding them...

- If you Suddenly cannot see the rider behind you pull up
- If the rider behind has left their indicator on, lower your left hand and open/close your fist to let them know
- If the staggered formation becomes so two riders are single file, remain that way. Otherwise the entire formation has to make an adjustment just cause one rider decided to ride on the other side of the lane
- Obstacles are signaled to riders behind with either foot or left hand pointing

As ride leader I have a Duty to keep the ride safe and legal. So the ride is conducted at the posted limits and pace slowed for surprise obstacles discovered on the Pre Ride so following riders are not taken by surprise.

Here's a ride I lead back in Feb. This ride was filmed from two perspectives - mine and another rider within the group...

And for Marty, this road can be ridden from The Gold Coast. We rode back the way we came after leaving the pub, but there are several different routes that can be taken and they are all awesome rides.

Your rides sound a lot more civilised than a few rides I've been. Some of the rides have been nothing more than an unorganised roadrace with the only rule being don't break rule one, then they don't tell you what rule one is. One ride I was one a few weeks back had one rider deciding to blast the other rider at close to 200km/h and then brag about it at the first stop.

How do they tell that you're the road captain?

They know I am the Ride Leader because I call everyone together five minutes before departure time and give the ride brief. I tell them Where we are going, give a run down of any hazards that need to be known in advance, where we will stop for fuel as well as other stops, who the Tail End Charlie is - and - if the road warrants it, allow riders to pass me at a designated time IF they want to hit twisties faster than I will take the group through them and tell them where to wait so they can rejoin. (And when we reach said points I'll signal that NOW they can pass - if I have given permission. There will be no such permission on Sunday's ride.)

Ride Leader and Tail End carry first aid kits and have each other's phone numbers. This way, any wayward riders are swept up by the tail and if assistance is needed the tail can phone my phone so that I have a message when we stop - some times the group can get spread out.

On the ride I linked to, a Hayabusa and two CBR1000s turned up at the same time and parked off to the side together. I approached them to ask if they were coming on the ride. They said Yes. I then told them, "well, I am the ride leader and we will be riding at a nice cruising pace enjoying the scenery and there will be no racing. Think you can you handle that?" They nodded. And they behaved themselves and actually enjoyed themselves remarking that that they found the non-racing pace to be quite enjoyable as they could take a bit of time to enjoy the countryside they were riding through. They also wished they had more comfy bikes - like cruisers! - cause their aggressive position sport bikes caused them discomfort on the ride where stops were an hour apart.

I take pride in the organization of my rides. From route to the orderly riding of the group to the lunch stop. I feel that besides my duty of care to make sure people finish the ride incident free, that they enjoy the riding as well as the lunch.
