Throttle and fuel issues

hey guys,

so i just replaced the brake pads on the rear today and took the bike for a spin for the first time since i painted it about 2 weeks ago or so.  Putt...putt...putt.. and a few miles away from the house I was stranded on the road.  Luckily I got a friend to bring some gas to me and filled up the tank enough to get to the nearby gas station.  Here is the issue though, and I've had it since I got the bike used in April, there was still some gas left in the tank.

Is there a common issue with these bikes that there has to be a lot of fuel in the tank to allow proper fuel feeding.  I've found that if I don't keep the tank relatively full (past 1/4) that the bike won't run like it is fuel starved.  Otherwise, where should I start looking to see what the issue is?

The second issue is that I've been fooling with my idle and throttle and the idle is super picky.  I had issues with hanging before and I tightened the rings around the vacuum boots and that seemed to make it go away.  However after I took the bike apart to paint it and reassembled it, I had to readjust it and it's acting funny.  It's like the throttle is not giving the bike any juice (like there is some sort of throttle limiter on the bike or something).  I noticed it is really sluggish off the start and when I started riding down the street, the bike can't go past 45mph and I have the throttle all the way down!  I played with the throttle adjustment near the throttle and it does cause the rpms to go up and down when idling so I'm curious where I should look first into the problem.

Both these problems manifest themselves like the bike is fuel starved but I can see the fuel being sucked into the pipe through the little filter window.

Any suggestions are welcome. thanks in advance guys.

also, it's an 89, stock everything

Are you running with the petcock on prime? And what little filter window?

If you painted the tank, the fumes (overspray dust) can clog fuel filters in no time.

the "window" im referring to is the inline fuel line filter and I had all the pieces painted away from the bike.

The issues happen with the petcock On, reserve, or prime.

Hmmmm. Try replacing/removing the inline filter first since there should be one on the petcock.

Check each end of the throttle cable- maybe even inside the throttle housing. The only limiter on the throttle should be WOT.

bump so peeps can help me out :)

Fuel filters notoriously slow down fuel flow and cause symptoms similar to running out of fuel. So...

remove the fuel filter.

I think your fuel starvation problems will magically go away. :thumb:

I'll try pulling that out and see what happens, thanks guys.

Sounds like the vent in the fuel cap maybe plugged and air locking the tank.
