So did you make it on time to the meeting?

Like 5 minutes late, but the stakeholders all got a kick out of the story... so it worked out as an icebreaker and the meeting went super well. (thanks for asking!)

SQUID: Noun. Person who rides motorcycle with girlfriend on rear seat with no protective gear then does wheelie and loses bike only to be more concerned about the bike (flipping down the road flying into pieces) than the girlfriend (with half her skin stuck to the pavement).

SQUID: Super Quick Until I Die
SQUID: A young motorcyclist who overestimates his abilities, boasts of his riding skills when in reality he has none. Squid bikes are usually decorated with chrome and various anodized bits. Rear tyres are too wide for their own good, swingarm extended. Really slow in the corners, and sudden bursts of acceleration when a straight appears. Squids wear no protection, deeming themselves invincible. This fact compounds intself with the fact that they engage in 'extreem riding'--performing wheelies and stoppies in public areas. Squids wreck alot. Derived from 'squirly kid'

Now, if it'd been double the speed limit I would have been impressed. You must try harder grasshopper.

If you'd been caught here in Australia doing that speed you would have to leave your bike on the side of the road and the coppers would have taken you to the lockup for a beating with rubber hoses.

100mph hasn't been considered fast for a bike since the old 'Ton Up' days.  Modern Superbikes will get up around the 200mph mark.  Your GS500 will not.  You own a slow motorcycle, which you are lucky to not have had impounded.

Does ~100MPH over the speed limit count..?

As long as it's on the highway and not in town.

At the local track, I've got severial GPS confirmed readings of 102-103. At the same spot, I'll usually see an indicated 140 on the 600 I used to ride there, though my best speed was ~150.

Here's a duel with a BMW S1000RR @ Sears Point. I felt like the GS was pretty fast in this vid.

Oh god. Save me the squid comments. I've been riding for over a decade and if any of you can say you've never broken the speed limit trying to make it to work on time you're full of sh*t.

WOT on a wide open highway in the middle of the afternoon w/ nobody on it... late to work... not swerving through traffic at 107 during rush hour.

The post was more a 'f*ck I got a speeding ticket' than 'look how fast I was going'... but tone doesn't translate well on the internet.

Oh please. We all ride for the thrill and the speed of it.  There's a certain "danger" to riding and its why we do it.  How many times have you told someone you ride and they say "you're crazy, thats so dangerous" ... Im not saying speed all day every day...but cracking it now and again is why we ride.  Else you may as well remove every thread on this board about performance upgrades and what not and put a governor on your bike...

Agreed.

Also, LOL at people thinking 107 is "super quick" when guys on liters do around twice that.

nice.  PS: the B class sucks. I could do better than them I bet :D

Squid: fast in a straight line, has to stop to turn (read: no skill).

107mph.  A 250 ninja will easily do 95, and 95 will still get you a ticket.  And, I used to routinely go 125mph (112 corrected).
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Nope...I don't agree...I ride for the excitement of accelleration, not speed :icon_twisted: ...I've never really been into speed  :police: ...maintaining speed through a corner (leaning the bike over  :thumb: ), accellerating away from a stop...but not outright top speed...my normal speeds are +10 to +15% over the limit...I use speed and accelleration when passing, but not to "make up time"...

I have no problem with people that do enjoy it, but make sure it is when there is no one else around...if you are going to crash (not saying that you will but...), don't take anyone else with you...I do have a problem when guys/gals are blasting along through traffic, even if it is in a clear lane...you never know when someone will change lanes in front of you...(or take offense and chase you down...my truck will go faster than your GS...search the YouTube vids, there's lots of NUTJOBS out there)

Just use caution when enjoying the performance available to you on your bike!!

I totally agree with MadJak on this one.
I use the GS to commute 9 months a year, and the occasional road trip.
I have NEVER gone more than 20% over the limit (usually to pass).

It has never been a concern for my skill... it the other drivers out there!
Lane changes with out signal, pull out of side streets, drifting out of lanes.

I'm addicted to playing with torque... loved the torque on the Buell XB1200 I demo'd last year.

Keep the silly speed shenanigans for the track,

Most people say that until they get out on the track. :)

There are a few big differences between riding a GS and riding a faster bike. The most obvious one is that the GS500 is cornering clearance limited, but delivers enough grip that it's generally possible to keep the throttle wide open at maximum lean angle. Try that on even a 600 and you're on your head.

The differences in power necessitate different braking strategy and lines.

There are also a lot of corners that just don't really 'exist' on the GS - I enter with the throttle wide open, and never brake or even roll off the gas.

Do 40km over in Australia and it's loss of license for 6 month. Cannot recall what amount over is auto loss of license for 10 years, $10,000 fine, bit of jail time and loss of vehicle as well (might be 100kph over)   :dunno_black:

Did you see this one from the other day?

Lets pretend he was caught doing 89km/h over the speed limit, the cop still didn't take his licence lol.

I live in the area, and got done for 30km/h over the speed limit, which I know for a fact that I wasn't doing, but then I read that story above, and now I wish I contested the fine and got to see the footage.
