Hey all,

Just thought I'd post up a little project we've got going here.

My son is 14 and we thought we'd get started on his first street bike, I've always liked the look of the GS and appreciate it's air cooled simplicity so we ended up getting a pretty sweet deal on a complete bike without title and another parts bike with a titled frame.

I work slow but hopefully it will be ready by the time he's legal.  :D

The complete bike.......

The titled frame and spare engine.......

The parts bike came with a bucket of whoop ass......

Right now we're just in the planning stages but I've collected a few of the usual upgrade parts.

R6 shock seems to be popular......

Nissin caliper with SVracing adapter.......

I'm trying to get rid of excess weight where ever possible, I figure when you don't have a lot of power it helps to be light. I have an 8lb box full of crap that won't be going back on the bike, and that doesn't include the center stand or passenger peg brackets or exhaust so more (less?) to come.

Speaking of exhaust, I picked this up on ebay dirt cheap.....

I couldn't believe how heavy the pegs/brackets are so a little digging through the scrap metal box turned up a set of alloy GS1100 engine mounts (at least that's what I think they are?) I think I can take another pound per side off here......

As far as aesthetics, well it looks like we'll be going with VFR seat cowl. I had one sitting around and just set it on the bike one day on a whim. The look has grown on me........

One of the biggest hurdles will be cleaning up the wire harness. I'll have to untape it and see what I can reroute where. There will some space in the tail but I'll still have to have some sort box for the battery and bulky connections.

Here's a mock up of what I'm thinking........

That should provide plenty of space for the Ballistic 4 cell battery we plan to run.

Guess that's it for now, once I get everything mocked up I'll clean up the frame and get it to the powder coater.

Color me green with envy of all your boundless resources and capability.

Proper good work you're doing friend. Keep it up. That GS is gonna look bad-a with that seat cowl on it. Nice choice!

How well does that cowling fit the seat? Is there much work that needs to be done to mount it?

Ha! You obviously don't know me!  :D

Thank you for the kind words but I'm no welder/machinist, just basic skills and hand tools. And beer, lots of beer.

It fits like a part from another bike  :D

It's not too bad, I trimmed it a little and I think I'll try to finish the bottom edge better but you could just bolt it on and go. Perfect for race/track if you don't mind it looking a little unfinished at the rear.

cool, thanks. Might give that a go!

Kudos on the project! Great work so far and it's cool it's for your son.

I can't make it out on my phone, but what's the red bike in the background? Yamaha?

It's opener there in the wide open air...

Nice work.

Consider the LiFe battery. 1 pound. 14ah. Really powerful. Never need a tender. And very small.

Thanks.... right now he's not super interested in spinning the wrenches but he'll come around. Maybe if we did an OCC style build with XBox as the theme?  :icon_mrgreen:

Other bike is a Yamaha SRX

Just going through the linkage...happy to have the aluminum knuckle, if for looks alone  :D

Bushings show a bit of wear, but still smooth.  :thumb:

Are these roller head bearings stock?

Hard to tell from the parts fiche  :dunno_black:

Updates! Right ...... damn it's been a loooong time. I had other projects to finish up, mainly this .......

But now that that's almost done the GS is back on the front burner.

We decided the VFR seat cowl was a terrible idea and found a Honda RS125 tail cheap. Not much to say about it now.... just some pics

I'm thinking about removing the blacked out part....

Oh and a friend gave me these foot pegs, he got them in box full of car parts at an auction, wish I knew what bike they're from because I need the brake lever .... any ideas? I'm guessing 90's Honda? :dunno_black:

So yeah, back at it ..... slowly.  :D
