Sputters and dies...

So today I let my bike warm up for a good 15 min. I would give it a little throttle every now and again and it would die. Finally decide to try and ride it around the block. But every time I try and pull away it would sputter and die. Or I can get it up and going and then it wants to act like it is getting no fuel and surge and stop and surge. If I pull the clutch in it will either idle or die. After about 5 min of all of this it will clear up and ride just fine. I'm still running gas that sat in it for about 6 months mixed with some mid grade fuel I put in it a few weeks ago. I've also added in some sea foam for good measure. Is it the old gas causing this.

might be bag gas. try that first. then try spark plugs. Are you getting any backfire in the carbs? it would sound like a a weird, quiet thump with the stock airbox. more pronounced with the K&N.

It sounds like its back firing when ever it surges. It will kinda surge and pop. I was going to check the plugs after I got through this tank. But I might pull the plugs when my son goes down for a nap later. I also have a small hole in my muffler I need to plug up. Unless that supposed to be there.

Have you cleaned the carbs? Definitely sounds like your jets are clogged if it bogs under throttle. This would be the time to get into it and tear them apart, before it gets warmer.

Tiny hole at low point of muffler is a water drain. Some have it. Some don't.
Trey acted kind of like that when he had a flaky spark plug.
Do the hillbilly carb sync. Pull one wire. how does it run? Then pull the other. How does that side run? That will tell you which side has a problem. Then try swapping plugs and if the problem switches sides, its the plugs.
Could be loose plug wires.
Could be bad gas and engine is unhappy until it warms up.
Could be one side is flooded until it runs for a while (bad float or something stuck in carbs.)

I checked the plugs, they aren't great but they aren't thrashed. So they will get changed soon. The guy I bought it from told me if it acted up after I ran this tank empty and put new fuel in it he would take it to the shop for me and have them redone. Thanks for all the input.

Before you (or the shop) changes out the plugs, now would be a good time to seafoam your engine (by means of the airbox) to get all of the carbon deposits out. I did it on my bike, and it completely fouled out the plugs, and blackened the inside of my exhaust, but it cleared out a lot of nastiness that may have an affect on your problem. Plus you get to make clouds of smoke, how much fun is that?!

By means of The air box? How do you do it that way. I've done this to my car a few times. So I know how awesome it is. I poured some in the tank when I filled up.

I agree.  I actually had what you're describing happen to me at the end of the 110+ summer temps over here in Phoenix last year.  Drain the tank and lines if you can, fill with fresh gas and run it until it gets all the bad gas out of the system & runs smoothly.

If you're not riding enough to use a full tank before it goes bad on you, find some fuel stabilizer at Autozone or the like.  It's worth the $10 or $15 you'll pay for it.

If you want to clean the top end of the engine a foaming combustion chamber cleaner works a lot better than Seafoam and has a much lower risk of hydrostatic locking the engine.  Mopar Top End Cleaner works well and is available through any Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep dealer.  I use MOC Optimizer but that may be hard to find outside of an industrial setting.  I use the stuff all the time on cars at work but never tried it on a motorcycle.  It does contaminate the oil so if you do use it make sure to change the oil afterwards.  This does nothing to clean the carbs though.

Yesterday I drained the fuel and put in some 91 plus some seafoam. Then took it out today. It was 15 degrees but the bike was better. Acted up the first 20 yards down the street. Had some pretty load backfires but the stopped.
