What can you expect from changing front forks?

Hey guys,
I was wondering what's really involved in this, and what to expect afterwards. I saw another guy asking a similar question but whats the cost expected? and where do you get the parts?

I think you're going to have to be a little more specific to get an answer.  Replacing the forks would be quite expensive if you want to go to aftermarket performance parts.  Some people have grafted complete GSXR front ends.  This option would also be expensive unless you happen to have one laying around.  We're talking hundreds of dollars.

Most people here (including myself) would advocate the progressive fork springs.  This makes an unbelievable difference in the feel and handling of the bike.  After I put mine in, it was like a new bike.  No more bottoming out under hard braking etc.  Cost is around $100.  They are also very easy to install.

The question to ask yourself is why do you want to change the forsk on your GS500?

As far as handling improvements you will have to focus on both ends of the bike and that is where you could run into some cost issues.

The stock GS front end can be upgraded for less money than trying to install another fork inhope of making the bike handle better.

You can revalve your fork and change the oil, seals and install some proper spings and you will be amazed how the new items will change how the fork feels and works.

By going to a differnt fork such as a GSXR or the like you will either need the complete front end including the wheel, brakes, brake rotors, brake master cylinder, fender and so on and this can cost you a good deal and then you will still have to revalve the fork and change the springs so it will work with a bike such as a GS500.

If you stick with your stock fork and upgrade it and install new brake pads and stainless stell front bralke line and a quality stickey tire you will be amazed how well you Gs will handle.

Your cost for a complete front end with all items needed to swap could be up to $800 and that will not include any machie work revalving and new springs for the donor fork and so on.

For the money you will spend on a new front end you could find a good deal on a Fox rear shock, RaceTech Gold Valves and springs for the forks, upgrade the front brakes and maybe install some new tires.  The upgraded GS500 might not look as cool as one with a GSXR fork but will ride better and cost less.

are you wanting to change the front forks, or just upgrade the front springs to something like progressive springs?
