Guy got turned into from a whacko driver turning left from a far right lane. I nearly washed the front today driving through a grease puddle. Keep it safe out there guys and girls.

I've noticed that behavior when someone is lost. They are slowing down and looking for signs or street names, then get flustered and forget how to drive for some reason. Happens in the city a lot. I would've done the same thing... wait to see what she was going to do, then try to get in front and away from her. She sure changed lanes really fast to make a 90degree left turn from the right lane. She must've been so lost it made her retarded.

Sorry but IMO the riders fault. Blinker clearly was on, vehicle slowing so he decides to gun it past. Instead effing around blowing the horn try and concentrate on braking. Good judgement is what was needed here.

From what I read on reddit he said that he initially slowed down when he noticed some weird behaviour (signal on, slowed way below speed limit) and then apparently thought she was just an idiot driver and decided to pass her, she then decides that exact moment is when she needs to turn.

My first thought was, why didn't he stop and let her futz around on her own? I would've stopped and gotten behind her if I noticed the signal, but apparently it had been happening for awhile and he was only trying to get past.

Regardless of the turn signal, you never make a left turn from the right lane. That's breaking the law first off. Secondly, when I'm driving, I happen to be one of those people that actually use signals to change lanes, and according to any state's law of signal usage, a left signal in the right lane means that you want to change lanes, not turn.  This person in the car is easily at fault, you just have to get past the insurance buttholes who'll try to get out of paying you repair and medical cost.

For his decision to immediately accelerate... when I'm riding, I always assume I'm invisible. But in this situation, I'm not too sure I wouldn't have done the same thing.  Even if you swerved left to avoid it, her nose would have ended up hitting you and you would fly forward or high-speed slide. I'd much rather just fall to the side like this guy! Always remember to look for a tag, because you never know when they're gonna run! But this guy's even better off, he has video.

An excellent video to analyze what went wrong. Definitely the cager's fault, but the rider made a couple of mistakes. The general rule he violated was the GTFO Rule: get away from a bad situation with all your resources.  He didn't brake enough, nor accelerate enough.  In one of his youtube comments he said he was in 2nd gear at WOT, but no... 4500rpm @ 35mph.

Reading it on reddit, I probably would have been in the same boat too. I if she really was going on like that for a couple hundred feet going 15 or 20 under the limit, at that point I would have assumed old person who forgot about their blinker. No one disagrees that it is obviously the car driver's fault, but to my (relatively inexperienced) brain, I always assume it's my responsibility to avoid everyone else. If someone swerved around and hit me, yes I'd be pissed at them, but just as pissed at myself for not paying enough attention. Some people say 'ride like you're invisible'. I prefer to think that everyone is AIMING for you. Hope everything turns out for the rider and his GS.

Right of way means nothing when you're crumpled on the pavement. I think the question of whether the driver was right or wrong is irrelevant. What matters is whether the rider made all the right decisions in avoiding potential dangers. hey, hindsight is 20/20, but I would think that, unless someone was tailgating him, the appropriate procedure would be to cover the front brake for an emergency brake if they driver decides to ignore you and cross over two lanes. Maybe also check behind you to see if there is room to swerve to the right out of the way? What else could he have done?

Sure the woman did some Wrong things. However - the rider could have Easily avoided this one.

It looks like he was actually in 3rd gear. BUT, as Soon as she starts to turn he is on the horn and breaking instead of swerving Away from the danger he just put himself in to. So he was Obviously expecting Something but didn't know what to do when that something happened. And by him slowing down with her, he sent her a signal that he was now allowing her to do what she needed to do.

Blinkers left on, unable to maintain constant speed, moving about in lane, etc., are all sign the driver is NOT paying attention. They will thus not be paying enough attention to see you.

i am in fact a user here.
it's really hard to tell with a wide angle camera how distances are/look so when you say i had enough room to turn etc etc.. i didnt... i had cold tires ( this literally happened 2min30sec from my house) as well.  I expected the possibility of her coming into my lane and was prepared for that.. but didnt expect her to make a u turn ontop of me... I still think i made the right decision slowing down as much as possible.. it runs through my head that i could have gone under her car and gotten run over had i tried to make a super tight radius turn on cold tires or tried to brake even harder.. 

The speed limit on the road was 45 .. she was going 30 or below the ENTIRE time i was coming up on her from like a quarter mile away, note i edited out that part because this was the exact video i gave to the police and i was going slightly above 45. i expected her to just keep doing what she was doing or merge into my lane not just decide to make an illegal turn on top of me .. and then leave

I hope this driver is caught and appropriately punished for being such a nitwit. Really, if you don't have the presence of mind to look at what's around you before you turn/stop/accelerate maybe you shouldn't have a license; at the very least you need more training

Thanks for posting... definitely helpful to review what has happened to others. I actually saw this posted on a local automotive forum's motorcycle thread and decided to look for it here. Since i'm a noob, I always leave tons of room between me and the cages... especially when they're not acting "normal"

According to the video description she's basically gotten off so far, just has to pay the fines and resit an exam or something..

If that happened to me I would hire a car and send her the bill, you need to get to/from places in the mean time and she still hasn't contacted insurance!

i wonder if anyone let him know his idle was hanging a little bit.

As far as fault, it is 100% the SUV driver's fault.  The lady made a left turn from the right lane (illegal) and made the turn in a way that caused a collision.  She is 100% at fault. 

That said, assigning fault properly doesn't keep you alive, driving defensively does.  I'd like to think that I'd be patient when passing her and wait until there was a solid yellow and no left turn to be made.  That said, I could see myself doing the exact same thing the GS rider did, especially at the end of a long ride.
