I got the itch. Engine in. I had to do  the next experiment.
Put in carbs. Connected up exhaust. Connected choke and clutch. Checked all wiring.

Turned the key.....

Sprayed starter fluid in air filter (gas not connected yet)....

Pressed starter button....

crank... crank... crank...

........... PUTT PUTT PUTT PUTT for a couple seconds with the starter fluid which means.......

                          IT'S ALIVE!

:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Just read this thread from start to end.  I gotta hand it to you Adidas...This will be one impressive bike when finished!  Some day when I'm retired and no more kids, I'll have time to do this!

And those PAIR block-off plates look familiar  :laugh:

Grampa Thumper is there to keep them out of trouble. But if I see a bunch of pocket bikes running around......  :icon_eek:

Still lots of little things to do.
* Finish drilling holes for the oil cooler brackets
* polish exhaust
* Connect throttle cables
* Replace the clip-ons with the new OEM set or one I refurbished. Depends on whether I want silver or metallic to match the gauge holder.
* Swap speedo with the one that came from the donor bike so the mileage matches the engine mileage.
* Put on gas tank
* Do an oil change
* spit polish everything
* Re-check every bolt
* Take him for a ride

One thing I discovered was taking carbs in and out WITH the airbox on seems easier. One thing on the older frames: the fuel petcock gets in the way of the airbox. Unbolting the petcock so it's moved out of the way really helps. Newer bikes have the petcock positioned  better.

Getting ready to sell Trey as I might already have a buyer. I know add-ons don't increase the value by what they cost. I decided to list them in case jmill's friend wanted any of them (though also depends on what he wants to pay as the basic price). Some things might go to jmill's bike and his stock to to Trey prior to selling.

I never realized what I had done just to Trey until I listed it.

Some upgrades are: (and approx. cost of them for reference)

SW Motec Engine bars; $175
clip-ons; $market price
R&G bar ends; $60
smoke turn signals; $45
LED tail light; $70
LiFe battery; $150
MosFet regulator; $125
0.85 fork springs; $90
New chain; $basic maintenance but is new OEM
New tires; $basic maintenance but are new
shark-fin/toe guard; $35
muffler guards; $60
2001 wheels (01-02 was silver); $replaced the white ones, also newer bearings
Rust-free (dent-free) tank 1997 or 1999 $anyone's guess
carbs cleaned and pilots replaced with 40's. $ don't really know
Custom seat ($250) would be replaced with stock seat.
New steering bearings  $basic maintenance, though bad PO is why they were replaced
New Sito slip on muffler ($200)
SS Chain guard $35
Billet fork brace $30
SS front brake line $45
Newer brake rotors
Front will get new 2007-2009 calipers
LSL Levers: $260 (will put stock back on)
May add SS line to rear - I have one.
Raask rear sets ($275). I probably would keep this.

Holy crap! I sure did a lot to Trey!

Now we're cooking with GAS!

I am soooo anxious to get Phenix out of the Bike Cave and onto the street.

adidasguy

Ordered fuel line from Aurora Suzuki. I believe in supporting my local dealer. They will mail it today. None of this "in stock" and you wait 4 days for it to be mailed.
Plus, having a good relations with your dealer - they will answer questions and be sure I get the right parts AND a discount off retail.

We may have Phenix on the street this coming Saturday!  :woohoo:

jmill

Wooo I'll be the photographer on that first ride. The pictures just don't do justice to how CLEAN Phenix is. Absolutely immaculate.
When in doubt, empty the magazine.

adidasguy

Who said we were all going to take Phenix for a ride?  :whisper: (It's a secret!)

Kijona

Nice looking bike man...as usual. LOL

Bluesmudge

Wow, you really got a lot done on Phenix in the last couple days! Thats awesome that it started up no problem.

adidasguy

Decided to work late tonight. No particular reason. Nothing special got done.

I think someone on this board just might recognize those mirrors  :icon_lol:

I like using a pressure switch for the rear brake light. Kirby's Speed Bleeders make bleeding brakes so easy.

Thank you!  :cheers:  Coming over Saturday for something special?

Need to balance the carbs. I think I can do the "Hillbilly Method" if pulling one plug and tweaking the balance screw until each side seems to work the same. Later I plan to put in the Buddha pilots on another set of carbs. Got a couple extra sets so I can fiddle with a set and not screw up the working set.

Need to put on airbrush's rear hugger. I can do that now that the Gimbel rear set is on (and German Engineering sometimes makes things a little off or forgets a screw and you have to improvise).

Need to pull  the muffler so I can add the brackets for the oil cooler lines. They are supposed to be on the outside to hold the fairing. I will cut off the fairing part and mount them inside the frame so you don't see them/. To get to that spot, the pipes must come off. I'll hit them with Rutland's Stove Polish while off and buff the scratches off of the chrome.

Got to decide on engine bars. Chrome, OEM black or black SW Motec? (Or paint them silver?)

Still want to install the MosFet regulator.

Details.... details... details...........

You don't need those in all honesty. Have been without mine forever, and its just dandy, and clean.

adidasguy

I know the oil cooler is on tight. Luckily one hole in the upper frame where the horn WAS mounted was the right place. I drilled and tapped the other hole for the oil cooler.

I want to be sure everything is there and done correctly. A matter of pride for building my first bike from the frame up. Though I just might skip that bracket since there are 2 bolts and the bracket that mounted where the frame parts are bolted together. It can't fall off.

I still have to mount a horn and just thought: what about using the fairing bracket part to mount dual horns? I'll have to check for clearance from the exhaust. I don't want them on the outside. I do have an air horn. If I can figure out where to put that without looking fugley and obnoxious.

Holy crap - I need to remember to call my insurance agent. Didn't need it insured because it was never on the road.

scottychop

Looking really good Adidas!

I too want to be around for the first ride if I can.  I have a GoPro camera that has bar mounts and can follow along, or mount it on Phenix. :thumb:

Kijona

So many people talking about riding and mounting Phenix...

Your bike is already the neighborhood whore, Adidas...and she's not even done yet!
