Hi everyone!

My name is Josh.  I'm residing in Elgin, IL which is a large city ~45-60 min. west of Chicago.  I bought my '92 GS500E a few years back as something to learn on, but one morning it wouldn't start and it has been idle in my hands for a few years.  I've been more serious about riding lately and have been trying to catch up on maintenance.  Through lurking I was able to replace my fork seals which were in dire need of service, nasty black oil and rusty seals.  I hope to steadily repair and overhaul the bike so that I can ride it more confidently and use it as a commuter/pleasure bike.  The riding that I have done on it so far [a few hundred miles] I've enjoyed, but I've been a bit wary of riding it too hard because I wasn't 100% confident of it mechanically.

In the past I've done some wrenching with my dad on his '01 Buell X1 Lightning.  We've put more aggressive cams in it, and put a bolt-on big bore kit to bump it up to a 1250cc.  He also had a business repairing and restoring clocks and grandfather clocks, which I've helped with too.  So I've had my hands on a few hundred gears or so  :D.

Oh, and when the bike stopped running years back, I think the carbs ran dry but as this was my first carburetor vehicle I didn't know what was going on.

My tasks for the near future are:

  • New Rubber - The rear seems like it's running a flat spot in the center and it has spooked me in some slow corners, and both tires are showing dry rot.
  • Carb [again] -  I disassembled the carb last season in an attempt to get it running.  It seemed clean, so I just reassembled without rebuilding.  I'm worried that it's leaking fuel into the heads, the oil smells a little like gas but doesn't seem to be overfull.  I also installed an inline filter because I was worried about tank rust but I think that I'm going to remove that.
  • Reinstall front forks - I'm in the middle of that right now.   :)
  • Rear shock - It's gotten a touch rusty from the old battery dripping acid on it from the breather tube.
  • Chain - Not sure of age, and it's a touch rusty looking.  Also can't be sure of how it's been maintained.
  • Paint [later] - The frame has some real minor rust, so I'm thinking about tearing the whole thing down and maybe doing a cool color scheme, TBD.  Red and white isn't really doin' anything for me.
  • Tear down - As I mentioned, minor rust, and just friggin' dirty.  I'd like to tear the whole bike apart just to clean everything nice.  It would give me full piece of mind to go over all the nuts and bolts and know that the bike is all there and as it should be.
  • Carb sync - This might happen soon as I've gotten tubing for the $5 sync and my tank is almost empty.  Last time I moved the tank with 20 lb. of bad fuel sloshing around it was a real pain.

If anyone has any questions/comments/concerns/tips I'd appreciate them.  I happy to be a posting member now instead of just a lurker!  In the past few weeks I've picked through some choice threads going back a couple of years or ~180 pages!

OH!  I'd especially like any good tips people have regarding rust treatment.  At the moment my only real plan of attack is CLR, but it only seems to help for things that are very minor.  It helped clean up the rusty dings in my front fork, but I had a little grit to help work those out too.

Welcome!  I'm in Bloomington/Normal.  Take a look at the Meet and Greet for an IL Riders Group.  Hopefully we'll be able to get together for a ride this summer/fall.

Hi Everyone,

I'm a 22 yr old uni student (not for much longer :)). Finished my engineering studies, now finishing my chemistry studies. I live on the Central Coast, nsw, Australia.

I've had my '05 GS500F for 2 years now. It has served me well, getting me to and from uni at all ungodly hours when buses don't go. Unfortunately it's out of action thanks to the starter motor, so will be replacing that when holidays come up.

Cheers

Welcome, AussieDude! I like your name :P

You two should marry and have aussiechild. Im from New Zealand and my name is Guy, and im going to auzzie in a week for a holiday! Too damn cold here!

Hahaha yes clearly we were made to be together by choosing such similar names :P

I'm just going to assume he copied me lol :P

Haha, I did I admit. I came to sign up and couldn't be bothered to think of a name. I quickly saw yours on the main board from a recent post and just followed suit :p

Btw, finally got my free time to fix my bike. Turns out the generator rotor mounting bolt was loose so the rotor assembly wasn't gripping the crank shaft.

New guy here. I'm Ross (and as you might guess, my middle and last initials are LH--a creative username if I've ever seen one), picked up a '93 GS500 and it arrived yesterday. I'm 24 years old and currently reside in Ellicott City, MD. I've got a lot to learn about motorcycles in general, so getting this bike running will be a great learning experience.

It has been a while since I have been on this site.  Still some of the same people here and great discussions.  Ride safely everybody.

Hey everyone,

My name is Russell and I finally got my act together and bought myself a bike. I have wanted one since I was about 6 years old, but with two parents that are totally against the idea, its been a little difficult. Now that I actually have on though they seem to be doing pretty ok.

2006 GS500F, fairings removed because the PO lowsided it and messed them up. Other than a few scratches it seems perfectly ok.

Here I am the day I bought it, definitely in the top 10 momments of my life.

I put maybe 100 miles on it, and then had some serious hanging idle problems. I just took it to a garage because me and my friend scratched our heads for a bit after going through all of Buddah's checks. It was just ridiculously lean, and I just had them do the work to clean the carbs and pop some new jets in there. Runs like a dream now! :thumb:

I will probably be taking more advice than giving it, but hey, I am a sucker for a nice forum.

tmbr_wulf

I don't know much about the 500 F as I have a 500 E, but I dig the grey/black color scheme.  Looks sharp without the fairing, but I don't really care for fairings anyway.
