Washed, polished, and waxed the bike.  The polish really brought out the shine in the tank and front fender.  Used some all-surface spray wax that shined up the chrome and glass pieces pretty nicely.

Tools of the trade:

The finished product:

Edit:  Also ordered some SV650 mirrors!

Bought some oil (Suzuki and Amsoil) then saw a really cool tank bag with a bazillion different pockets and compartments and a handle & straps so I can carry it around. Really cool!

Teased myself by starting it with starter fluid. Did a more thorough cleaning of the carbs, got some gunk out of the clogged choke jets. Tomorrow the carbs go back on and I'll make another attempt to start it up.

It looks bigger than it is because it is so narrow. It is smaller than a helmet. Most tank bags are wider, which would make them look not as high.
Cool because it has a bazillion compartments to organize tools, camera batteries and holes for USB power cables.
It seems high, but only because it is narrow and shorter than most bags.

Got it running, and on its own power this time! Today is a great day!

Adjusted the headlight so I'm not blinding people from behind on low beam. Took it for a night ride. Low beam is kinda low but highbeam is friggin awesome now  :woohoo:

Picked it up from the shop.  Had to take the bus there.  They changed the route, so the closest stop was 2 miles away.

Too cheap to take a cab so shoelace express it was.
Bikeless and Broke at the moment...

Rode it for the first time! The idle was giving me some serious trouble; had to stop every 10 minutes or so to play with the idle adjuster, but I think I've finally got it dialed in. Aside from that, the brakes need to be flushed, the chain needs to be tightened again (must have had a tight spot or two), the rear brake might need adjustment, and I want to change the oil again. Chances are its a bit fouled from all that cranking.

Also, I had my first run-in with an idiot today. Pulled out in front of me, successfully cutting off another car in the process. I had slowed down in anticipation, so I was able to avoid any trouble, but it was an eye opener. Not 10 minutes into my first ride I had to lay on the brakes to avoid an idiot. Regardless, I had an absolute blast! There is nothing quite like being on a motorcycle. I'm hooked.

 remembered to check oil ... only just on the tip of the stick .. took about 300ml of Caltex Delo 400 15/40

went for a sedate ride with a few mates for a coffee run.. it seems smoother/quieter ..

would being low oil (but still on stick) really make that much difference?

Came up with a bunch of great ideas then as i walked into my garage forgot every single one so after about 15 minutes of staring at my tools / bike i decided to go for a ride, remembered what i wanted to do then rushed home and again forgot as i pulled into the driveway, i need to start writing stuff down!

Reminds me of the movie "Night Shift"  You need a tape recorder since you are an idea man.

I've got a Scala Rider G4 headset in my helmet and whenever I get an idea or need to copy something down when I'm thinking about it, I use a Voice Note on my android phone! Just activate Voice Search and Note, then say whatever you want to record, either a verbal recording or a written note (doesn't always work well in high winds, lol).

And I adjusted my idle yesterday since it was running too high when she got hot, this morning she was running smooth! :thumb:

Went for a ride!!   :woohoo:  Picked up a few misc. parts that I ordered from the dealer.  Might need to fiddle with the front end, double check measurements and fluid level.  The first slow speed right that I made felt really friggin' weird.  Not sure if something isn't aligned properly from my fork seal replacement or if it's just because I haven't ridden in a few weeks.  When I did a test ride after the forks were together it felt pretty good, but most of my turns were lefts.   :dunno_black:  Other than that, on the straights it felt fine.  Carb feels better after the rebuild, still feels a little flat at mid throttle but it is much better than before, when it would bog at mid throttle.  Tonight [hopefully] she'll get new gauge dampers installed, bona fide vacuum port caps, and that's it.  The fresh fork seal will wait a bit on.

Oh!  And I have to find my front fuel tank cushion, it got forgotten about [again] during tank removal/reassembly.  I'm hoping it's in the garage.

Changed spark plugs in Phenix. I decided to splurge and try Brisk BR12ZC plugs. WOW! What an improvement. Most noticeable is the even, consistent firing. Warm up took almost no time before killing the choke. Maybe better power, but what impressed me the most was a smoother running engine due to more consistent firing of the cylinders.  :woohoo:

They're like $14 each as opposed to $3 for our ordinary NKG's or $7 or so for iridiums.

Brisk has some really good info on spark plugs, heat ranges and so forth. http://www.briskracing.com/

Interesting that the BR12ZC's with copper have 3 times the electrical conductivity of iridium, and 6 times the conductivity of nickel plugs. better electrical conductivity would mean a more powerful spark.

OK- go ahead and rag on me for AGAIN spending excess money on premium parts for an old outdated model bike (like has been done for $125 each for LSL levers and other parts). There. Preempted the ragging!  :flipoff:

I'm curious how one would work in Thumper - my 1973 TS-185 2-stroke.
