Installed the 7075 aluminum dogbones I made to bring the rear height back down a little with the sv shock. Checked the fuel delivery system out try to find the cause of a couple of fuel starvation stoppages I have had (didn't find anything).

Pics or it didnt happen!!!

Ordered a new seal for the oil filter cover. The O-ring was badly deformed (flattened) and covered in some sort of sealant...when I tried to reuse it, oil sprayed out from the mounting surface. Gotta wait a week for that to come in.

I rode it for the firs time in 3 weeks since I blew out my back! And decided not to trade it for a different bike! I started measuring out a plan for moving all the electronics for my winter project of tail removal. Oh, scraped a few messy insect problems off the front as well.

So I was on my way home from work today... about 2.5 km from home... my chain snapped! Thankfully in town and not going too fast yet. I walked my bike home on the sidewalk like a loser.
Googled how to install a new chain... opened up the case....

OMG! So I cleaned and cleaned....

And as an aside, can anyone tell me if my sprockets need replacing?!

cjp

Wow, thats quite an improvement you made! :)

I did a small hack to get napoleon bar end mirrors on my wife's 97, inplace of the handlebar weights.

Also ordered a horn, since hers didn't come with one.

I guess that means tomorrow I'm hopefully going to make a bracket for it, and try and figure out where its supposed to mount.  Its amazing how many pictures of GS500e's out there aren't from an angle where I can see where the horn mounts up. :)

No

But I am sure someone will come along and say you should change your sprockets when you do your chain BUT as it looks now, NO

If the first two pics are after u walked it home.... WOW!

did you or the PO ever lube the chain?
Just TOO much rust color there.

inside should be all Black pretty much, not rust.

Def keep up on the chain with the next one tho.

Actually tombstone, the chain (the stock one) should be silver, as well as the sprockets.

I didn't find this out until I cleaned my chain and sprockets thoroughly with kerosene and elbow grease, but now the look WAY better!

And quaid79, you definitely need to oil your chain! And with the amount of rust (and the condition of that chain) you might want to replace the sprocket, but you don't have to.

Front sprockets are cheap and easy to install.  It looks like you have some "hooking" wear on the front sprocket, and I would certainly replace it along with the new chain.

+1

Replace sprockets with chain so they wear together - Even though your sprocket may not look too bad, think long term money and time spent. Your sprockets and chain may wear faster if not done at the same time too... you'll be opening that up sooner just to replace a sprocket.. then a chain again... its just a continuum you want to avoid to save in the long run.

Adjusted the chain, got the new oil filter cap sealed up, filled up the oil, and put some miles on it. The idle is hanging and I've got a nice dead spot in the throttle. Tomorrow I'll test for vacuum leaks, but if that doesn't reveal anything, it may be time for a rejet (Vance & Hines exhaust system).

If you don't find a leak, try synching the carbs.  I had a hanging idle, and could not find a single leak.  Decided to try syncing the carbs and VOILA no more hanging idle.

Yessir. I fear that with the Vance & Hines exhaust it may be running a little too lean.

Duly noted! I'll give that a shot as well.

Was trying to change my plugs last night. Unscrewed the fairing. I found this all over the engine.

So I did this

And cleaned it up nicely!
Then I did this...
