GSF500

1st offf, Hi  to everyone :)... I have a GS500F 2007 that has the following, Handle bar risers, zero gravity shield, k&n filter, Brisk plugs, and Bags. This is my 3rd bike, down from a harley 1200 and a 750 ninja. I bought this bike new to commute and ride country roads and I really like it!!! I also changed the front/rear sprockets and get 72+mpg. I was thinking about buying a bigger bike for fun but I can't rid of this GS500F. I would like to start tinkering with it and do a complete overhaul this fall starting with tires, full exhaust, and rejetting. I have read a few post on the forum regarding the mods I have listed and hope there might be some new updates, or information or respones to the following. I am looking at the Jard full system (or V&H,Yoshi), pirelli sport demon (stock size or bigger??), what jets to buy regarding my bike. Anyone like or dislike what I've picked out? Reviews? I will upgrade the tires first and want something to really stick, don't care about the mileage. Thanks for your time and Sorry to those that flame my post for repeat question.

Welcome!

Much of the information you have already read in the wiki still holds true. There are bunches of threads on exhausts, tires, oil, chain lube, etc., all of which tend to be personal preferences. Regardless what you decide, we will need to see pics throughout the process. :thumb:

Out of curiosity, how long have you been using the Brisk plugs? Was it something you discovered on your own or after reading about them here?
It seems it has become necessary to qualify my posts:
I am/am not trying to start an argument. This post is/is not intended to be a personal attack. I am/am not merely attempting to present a different viewpoint.

Select the words that apply to you.

Sport demon on the front and bt-45 on the rear. Awesome combo. Great for turning and stick very well. The bt-45 is great in the rain and I feel that I wont ever change up this set-up. ALSO stock size.  :woohoo:

Don't get a full system for performace, doesn't do much for all the trouble and decrease in gas milage you see.

But if you like the look, the sound and the weight savings enough, a new pipe can be worth it. We just see a lot of people get into trouble when they try to rejet. If you really want to do it, I would only go +1 on the jet sizes (pilot and main) with 2 washers on the needle and then keep the stock airbox/filter. This will keep you close to the fuel economy you are getting now but give you shorter warm-up times and slightly better throttle response. More extreme jetting with a lunchbox filter may get you 2 more horespower but not worth it IMHO.

There is a ton of information about all of this on the board. Do a search and check the wiki. Come back with more specific questions.

THANKS...!!!  I've read about people doing the pipe and jet but the post seems to end with no final long term effects. Money is no object to do the mods just wondered if it was worth the fun factor 6 months down the road, sounds like stock form is BEST for this bike.  Personal experiance with a particular setup that works is what i'm looking for ....and your right jetting seems to be the big problem. The brisk plugs work better in my bike for warm up and better at mid range highway speeds... I can feel a difference in throttle response. I just replaced the plugs a couple hundred miles ago and I recommend them so far but time will tell. I bought the Brisk plugs from Amazon. SOOO far I am going to buy the Sport demons for my next mod and if you have new tires on your bike that you like let me know. I will read and hold off on the pipe/jet thing for now but if you did the mode I would like to hear from you. Thanks again for all who have responed (Bluesmudge,Basswow, jdoornand mister).....there really is alot of info out there.....Again sorry for beating the DEAD HORSE.

you should probably change your gearing if you want it to be more fun...I'm rockin 14t/42t which gets the revs up into the power band much quicker with torquier launches, but definitely chews into my top speed and gas mileage. Further ive got a v&h full exhaust and a lunchbox air filter. I'm jetted at 22.5 65 147.5 with 1 washer and 2.5 turns on the air screw. Sport demons on front and back. Also have '89 clip ons. It's a world of fun to drive and still more than doubles the gas mileage of my cage.

I really like the Motad pipe. Stainless and chrome. A little better sound than stock but not loud like Jardine or V&H. Europe has noise laws - Motad is UK. Pricey but looks so good! No jetting needed either - basically an improved stock exhaust.
I added the R&G muffler guards. You need to when you have a $500 exhaust (+$125 shipping from the UK)

your bike sounds a lot like mine (08f) with raised bars and higher gearing, and also great mileage. mine gets 72-80mpg all summer. my concern is your desire to start mucking with it to try and make it into a performance bike, that its not and never will be. get some good tires, maintain it and enjoy it for what it is, a great little commutor bike.when i bought mine last year i found this site and started reading, over 1200 pages later i have learned plenty, and one of the main problems people have is carbs and jetting. just leave them alone, dont fix what aint broken. my last bike was a v-max with plenty of power, but this bike moves me along just fine knowing that loosing my drivers licence in a heartbeat is too much to risk. if you want a go fast bike buy one, dont try turning a pellet gun into a 12 guage.
if a man has integrity, nothing else matters. if a man dosen't have integrity, nothing else matters.

AGREED.... I will leave it stock and focus on the tires and riding THANKS FOR THE REPLIES...!!! That Motad pipe does look sweet. Any gains just doing the pipe without jetting??? Thanks gsatterw for the specifics of what has worked for you thats good to know, Also, how do you rate the sport demons over stock tires? Did you go bigger or stock size? Do they grab in turns like I've heard? I like fist hand experiance! Any radial tire recommendations?  Thanks again guy for showing me light..

Here's a bias ply tire comparison run on a GS500 on a track in the UK that's worth a read.  Demons are popular with many Ninja 500 and GS500 riders, I've not used them myself.

http://www.ex-500.com/wiki/index.php?title=Tire_Comparison

Here's a list from the Ninja 500 forum of tires used for reference, the Ninja 500 from 94 on comes with the same size oem tires and wheels as the GS500.  We should make a list like this some day I think.

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p9OvigvZMFSbc6PJadCGCNQ

I've used some radials and liked the rears but never liked the front radials as well on the GSs.  Tried a lot of sizes, here's my tire log:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v443/jcp8832/GS500tirelogs.jpg

407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

Personally, I like the Sport Demons (SD) over the stock. I replaced my OEM rear at 23,000km with a same size SD. Got 17,000 out of that one and went with another SD, this time a 140 cause it was all they had. So far I have almost 17k on it and it looks like it will reach 20k easy.

Replaced my OEM front with an SD at 30,000. So far I have 27,000 on this SD front and it's still going strong as well.

I do feel they provide better grip over OEM. Also, as my commute is no 4x longer than it used to be and 98% highway, I expect more wear in the middle now. So we'll see how they go when I change the rear in a few thou.

There is no need to change down front sprockets unless you want quicker initial acceleration. After that initial thing there is no advantage.

I actually haven't experienced the stock tires, but I find the sport demons are good on good roads in good conditions. On the Atlanta roads, which are very nice and curvy and fun, the sport demons perform fantastically and grip very well. In New Orleans, which has the worst roads in the country and are all straight, they arent the best thing. They fall into turns very well, i have the stock sizes 110 up front and 130 in the rear. I will say they totally suck in the rain and off road. It took a while to get used to how much they slip and slide, and to ride around that.

Hope this helps, Graham

One of my GS's has Sport Demons and they are fantastic.
My other GS has Battleaxe and they suck sh!t (they were on the bike when I bought it and still have plenty tread)
When the Battleaxe wear out I will go to Sport Demons there as well.
I am not interested in anything you have to say
Don't bother talking to me, I will not answer you
