Lesson Learned - Keep an extra key to your disc lock!

This morning rode in to the gym.   Parked and locked the disc lock on.  Everything's great, good work out, beautiful morning, get ready to go and,....FARG!  No key.  I search everywhere; back in to the locker room, ask the counter people if someone turned in a key,.. check jacket, backpack, lockers, floor,.....SOAB!

Call in and tell the boss I'm going to be late if I even make it and start thinking of how to cut that damn thing off.  Change back into gym clothes and take one more look by the bike, start walking towards the 'shop' 4 miles away, and 'hey what is that little black thingy on the ground over there?'  "WTF."  Disc lock key is lying on the ground about 20 yards from the bike.  I almost think someone is messing with me because I looked all over the ground and followed my steps. ???

Oh well, Praise God for the small things.

Lesson: keep extra disc lock key in backpack, not 40 miles away in the garage.

Anytime I'm on a long ride, besides the spare tools & spare gas (for those harleys that can't go more that 100 miles) I carry extra key inside my jacket. Just to be safe in case I drop one.
Did that once at UW Medical Center. Had extra keys but the regular keys had those really sweet miniature adidas shows on the key ring. I was more worried about the shoes than the key. Valet guys found the extra key - must have dropped it after paying for parking and putting change in my pocket (no- I do not use valet parking for Suzi).

Lesson: ALWAYS carry extra key. In my jacket I have one ring with key for every bike I have - never without a spare key no matter who I jump on.

I basically have a carabiner that I keep my keys on, each bike has a separate key ring with key, house keys etc and the collective disc locks and Givi boxes ring also has a spare key for each bike.  when I ride I remove the bike's key from the caribener, use it, then return it.  If I drop those keys, I am going to notice it.

It's such a horrible feeling, ain't it cbr! Gosh, you were lucky. Did the same thing with my wheel chain last year and had to get the wife to come over with a spare key. TG she was at home, she saved my bacon. Years ago, got back to my Nissan Patrol parked outside the local railway station and found I had all the keys EXCEPT the one for the big anti-theft bar strapped across the steering wheel...and I had no spare key. Went back next morning with a hacksaw and a carbide blade and spent a hour or so cutting the bl**dy thing off. And, you know, that there I was outside a railway station and a million people walking past and me and my bum sticking out of the driver's door sawing and sweating away and nobody said a thing to me! I think must have I learnt something about locks and security things that day.

Gives ya that deep worry in yer chest, eh? Glad it reappeared for ya

Luckily none of my two wheels vehicles run so i never worry about losing keys while I'm out. joking.. I always throw my drz key in my helmet and have lost it in the ear hole and under the inside liner a few times haha Got a glow in the dark key chain from work and can always see it in there now :thumb:
