Hey Guys,

As the title states I am looking to buy a set of oem clip-ons. They don't need to be in perfect shape since I am going to repaint them anyway... as long as the bars are straight.

Let mw know if you have any.

Thanks
Rui

I can source OEM clipons for you. They were standard on all naked GS500's till 1999 or something here (Israel).

I know there are probably several members here that want the oem clipons + top plate. If a few members are interested, I can source several pairs and ship them all to a single location in the U.S. to cut on shipping costs.

I would love a pair of these as well! My top plate is in pretty nasty condition, and OEM clip-ons would be a sweet way to clean it up.

So maybe instead of hogging ruifrsilva's thread, I should open a separate thread to check out interest in such a group shipment?

I sourced 3 pairs of clipons/mounts today. Not sure about price yet, I need to haggle with these motorcycle parts people. There is also 1 pair of new clipons/mounts at the official Suzuki dealership, but its for a premium

Your own thread on this would be best.
I bought 3 sets of new-old-stock from a warehouse in Israel last year. There's a guy that sells on ebay. I bought quite a lot of new old stock from him.
When you deal with the OEM clip-ons, remember there are 3 types. I had a thread detailing the differences. Only what we call the European type-1 will fit new tanks. You might refer to the 3 types as 1989's, Shorts(1990-1996 I believe)  and Talls (1997-2000 I believe). I've seen those references in the UK. The Type-1 (i.e. Shorts) are the hardest to find and the most desired since they fit all years. The 89's and Type-2 do not fit newer tanks without modifications. The top plates are the same for all years, even though early ones were more solid and later ones were cast with more hollow space on the under side. The clips do have a left and right, though not always marked L and R.

Remember the actual bars: good, straight bars are hard to find. The 1989 bars are different from the 1990-2000 bars, though you can drill a hole and notch to make all bars fit. Left and right have different holes but that can be drilled so L and R is not an issue. New old stock bars for 1990-2000 sets are available in France at about $40 a bar plus postage ($80 a pair). Something to remember when haggling over price.

While you're looking for non-USA parts, look for the adjustable preload fork caps.

I will open a thread tomorrow morning once I get the prices and shipping sorted out.  I will inspect each bar with a "spirit level" to make sure I dont take anything less than totally straight. I saw the 3 pairs today actually, and they looked quite ok. If im not mistaken, they are the short ones. Do you have length measurement for the differences? (ill look for the thread you mention) One pair had dark colored mounts, but lighting wasnt good in the warehouse so am not sure if its rust or not.
The bars from france include the mounts I suppose?

About the adjustable preload fork caps - you mean fork caps that you can adjust by hand (which I havent seen) or those that need a wrench but can be adjusted while the fork is installed in the triple/top plate? I have those on my bike, and I think I saw a few mounted on the forks of a few dead bikes at the parts warehouse. I wasnt aware these arent stock everywhere else...

The $40 each in France is ONLY the steel bar. Not the top plate or the bar holders. A tiny bend of no more than 1/8" is OK. Hard to find absolutely perfect used bars. Look for broken screws in the end from broken bar end bolts.

The fork caps: (these are the "Short" or European type-1. The 1989's are shorter and have the 2 screws on the back side)

OrTahor, see what you can find and post a thread, I am very interested in getting a set.

OrTahor

yes these are the fork-caps I have on my bike. Ill look for fork-caps as well when I go to the warehouse tomorrow. Probably can find at least a few pairs.

IIRC all the clipons I saw today had bar end weights mounted on them. Not sure if it was OEM weights or not. Will take pics tomorrow of everything.

The top plate in the US-models have the mounting holes for the bar-holders (what I call mounts)? By reading your post it seems like not, and anyone who wants to do the conversion need the top-plate that came with the clipons/holders

BTW, I removed the bar-end weights from my clipons. Didnt plan to, but while I was redoing my forks I fiddled with the clipons and somehow misplaced and lost one weight.  couldnt find it no matter what. So I just didnt put back the other one on and I ride like this ever since. It does not feel different below 150km/h indicated, any faster then that and I can feel more vibrations, but nothing too serious.

There are 7 parts:

1. Top plate: not same as top plate that mounts stock bars, but they are interchangeable. Top plate for standard bars has a cradle for the handle bar and the mounting bolts are hidden by the handlebar. Clip on top plates are flat and the clips or "bar holders" bolt to the outer ends. Held to top of triple with the 2 bolts.

2-3: Two clips - one on each end bolted to the top plate with 2 bolts each. There are 3 types of clips or "bar holders"

4-5: Two bars: There is a left and a right as mentioned. Only difference is position of the index hole. 89 bars have one notch at the bar holder end. 1990-2000 have 2 notches. 1990-2000 bars can be used in 89 clips by drilling the index hole in the correct place. 89 bars can be used in 1990-2000 clips by filing a second notch and drilling index holes in the proper location.

6-7: Bar ends: These fasten to the bars with one bolt. They are the same bar ends as used for the standard bars. bar ends are not a GS500 specific part but are generic and used on a variety of models of Suzuki bikes. They are the same bar ends used after 2000 except that after 2000, bars were fastened with a rubber bushing and there was no nut welded into the end of the bar. bar ends you saw were no doubt OEM - a simple black weight with a bolt through it. Note: Old ones were lead with a steel outer sleeve.  Later they went to solid steel to eliminate use of lead.

An 89 set without bar ends and bars are removed from the clips:

bars in but no bar ends:

A bar end. This one has the rubber bushing used 2001+. No rubber bushing for 1989-2000 handlebars, and the bolt is a little shorter.
