What's the deal with spam?

Just something to think about...... It is Friday. Time for one last rant of the week........

OK, we all get spam. We instantly recognize it as spam. It is blatantly obvious. Email NOT addressed to me in my in-bos...  from some obscure country... and titles like
"Superlative modernized pharmaceuticals for rigid erection. Lightning fast delivery!"
"Remarkable uncostly capsules against limp erections. Fast delivery guaranteed!"
"Sensationalistic pharma formulas improving sex drive. Buy them here!"

AOL or firefox can't tell these are spam. We have computers with voice recognition, face recognition, police driving around reading and storing your car license plate and location, and near artificial intelligence understanding what you say to your i-phone.

So why can't they stop spam?

Then, on the other side, legitimate emails from B&H Photo or Video Guys usually is classified as spam? What gives?

I have 2 ideas

1) The service providers are getting paid under the table. If they get paid, then they have no reason to stop obvious spam. If not under the table, perhaps the spammers are buying internet service from the providers. Why stop spam and cut a source of income?

2) It is the NSA and other governments. If you go to web sites in the spam and enter your information, technically they are not spying because you are willingly giving your information. just another way to snoop and be perfectly legal.

Ever wonder about trojan programs and viruses? Couldn't a lot of that be government agencies? Think about it - if a virus sent all your personal information back to somewhere, who but a government agency (or google) would have the capacity to store and collect this flood of data from trojans on millions of computers? The average person making a virus for fun would certainly not.

We already know that many of the "virus" people are now selling their discoveries of holes in Windows and apple to large corporations for big money. Google was largely funded by the government - how else could they afford to map and photograph every building, home and inch of this world?

Those were spams that got through to the AOL account!
Shouldn't AOL be better at it?
It is an old legacy account but still used a little for old business.

john

We use gmail for our domain and almost nothing gets through.  Your ISP, or AOL or whatever is doing a terrible job.

Even hotmail...now outlook has gotten WAY better at filtering out spammers.  Not as good as gmail, but only one or two per week at most.

All my other accounts are pretty spam free. Some I have appriver linked in to filter the crap.
really odd that a biggie like AOL simply lets all kinds of spam through - like they make money off of it - really? Seems like  they do!

The Buddha

Yea, "this is your erection on a nigerian lottery" ...

ive been getting just a few lately... thankfully the main flood has stopped...

but these latest ones... just a 'Hi, i need your help, please respond to the following email address >some crap or other< and we could make a good benefit to you' .... none of the whole "i'm a widow and the govt is blah blah/i'm a bank worker and the account holder is blah blah/your distant relative recently died on a motorway and YOU are the only person on the WHOLE planet we could find blah blah'

with the motorway ones... i never knew my plethora of distant uncles and aunts ever visited italy or europe ... or were such crap drivers!!  ;) :icon_rolleyes:

Ha! You are really showing your age by using AOL email. Might as well wear a T-shirt that says, "I was already old when they invented the internet!"

Between gmail and my mail software I almost never see spam. It is scary to poke around the junk mail folder once in a while.

adidasguy

No, AOL is a legacy account still active from many years back. Just holding on to adidaspatrick and patrickadidas ID's.
All important stuff goes through my business where I have 12 accounts for various stuff or gs500club (I think you have a gs500 club email. If you forgot it, I can look it up or set up a new one for you).
Anyway, you know my age. Not a secret. Remember compuserve? How about fortran?

yamahonkawazuki

LOL CompuServe, fortran , and a BBS. yes I remember.

Wildcat: bad business model. They had an updater. Cost of update for existing customer was MORE than buying a new copy from a dealer. Needless to day, at that time we switched BBS programs.
