I would presume its one of those things where you don't fully appreciate the value to you have it yourself... likewise, its also probably one of those things that once you have had it, you wouldn't (or maybe can't even) go without it...  :dunno_black:

Slips .. Just askin ... Your Bimmer has ABS obviously .. And you love it.. No drama there  :thumb:

But .. (Cos I can't remember ) .. Have you had a moment yet on the bike where the ABS has cut in? ... And definitively enough that you feel certain that you would have been seriously munted up otherwise? ....

Also ... And again I'm curious .. If you have had 'a moment' ... Have you since ridden another bike with no ABS ... And ... Noticed any difference in your braking habits? ...

.. Not hacking at you ... If I see a bike I want sometime that has ABS on it then I'm happy to have the ABS ... Just I don't see that it's a thing where 'it should be law that every bike has to have it/or essential' ...

What about the next step after that ... Traction control?  :thumb:

Have it. Have used it. Saved my bacon and the bike (mostly) and won't go without it again

Never ridden a bike with abs...but to say it's ESSENTIAL...nice, sure...kinda like dual discs ...but ESSENTIAL, I'm not convinced. I mean, isn't the idea to drive safely so you DON'T need to pull off an emergency stop rather than to have to rely on anti-lock functionality and use good proper braking technique (loading the front properly etc)...or maybe sa weather and roads are just...better. To me it's just a complex extra for amateurs who don't know how to read their ride properly. Just saying....

This same remonstration was done when abs was put on cars...  both sides of this sound the exact same as it did then.  However, cars are indeed a different animal... and plenty of studies discount that ABS truly reduces accident incidence and severity.  This reason alone was why the U.S. has not mandated its presence on light vehicles as the EU did 4-5 years ago.  That data is only true for cars though!

The IIHS had a study just about a year or so ago that found motorcycles with ABS were 37% less likely to be involved in a fatal crash than models without ABS... take that stat however you want, but numbers have never been close that in ABS studies for cars.  So I do believe there is something to be said for it on motorcycles.

Studies in Europe have shown that introducing ABS had a marked decrease in accidents to start with, until people got used to it... then they levelled out as people started driving differently in accordance with the build in safety margin of ABS... so in other words it works for a while, then people get used to it and just push things further... so the accidents start happening again.

And of course now with new drivers starting to rely on driving aids like ABS, traction control, power steering, rear view cameras, etc. to learn how to drive... what will happen when those things inevitably fail? They won't be able to control the car...

People should be forced to learn to drive and spend the first 3 years in a 3 on the tree HK Kingswood... a big boat, no power steering, four wheel drums, no ABS, no traction control, no distractions of fancy schmancy blue tooth thing-a-ma-jiggies...

Hell it just might make drivers a little better than they are these days  :thumb:

My crash almost 1 year ago like I explain in this is where my abs saved me and kept the bike upright in the dirt.

I'm a bit 50/50 on abs on the learner bikes, I learned proper roll on four finger braking which I was told if you do that it's almost impossible to lock the front. But we've all been there in that panic brake situation where despite our best intentions we grab that front brake, abs would help keep things upright, however i agree learners shouldnt be relying on it, so like I said 50/50 on it.

Now you get to the more expierenced riders where I rekkon abs is a compliment nice to have just in case again not relying on it but its there if needed. I only used my front abs once and I'm half I had it, kept me upright in the dirt and scrubbed off alot of speed.

And yes ej the grips make the ride more enjoyable.

At 10 secs you get a gret shot of me haha. We filmed this as a spur of the moment thing. This was the first time these bloke saw this road and I took them over it and their reaction was nearly the same as the first time mister took me over it.

Another nice vid Slips.  :thumb:
1.) Looks fast.
2.) Riding for the sake of enjoying the road, not just for transportation from point A to B.
3.) In Jersey, every road look a lot like this...

Almost doesn't make sense to ride here.
Just saying.
Aussieland is bike country!

yup Aussieland IS bike country ...  :thumb: ... then we also have  .. Tasmania!! .. i havent really ridden much there .. just a few quick jaunts on a mates postie bike when i was there... but driven quite a lot of it over 18 months i lived there ... look up some YT vids of the place...  :D

yeah they have freeways and such .. but some of the country roads .. rival The Dragon or Mulholland ... but with less d ickheads and traffic!

i always get the feeling that waaaaaay back in the day ... the blokes that designed some of the roads.. knew motorcycles were coming! ..

theres great riding roads all over the world .. but i reckon we have over our fair share .. probably 80% on the east coast + 95% of Tasmania!

only one thing to remember about tassie... if you hear banjos ... dont stop!  ;)

Yanks can't drive "lefty" worth a damn.
We always keep to the right and only go to the left side of the road to pass a vehicle.

We drive on the wrong side of the road over here. I'd be dead in a week!

ABS don't save you riding into Armco - so I heard. Traction control won't stop you hitting a tree. The only things those technologies do is make you crash safer  :flipoff:

My first car was a Kingswood Station Wagon. No power steering in that sucker. Vinyl seats to really scorch the skin in summer. Had flow-through AC (AKA "4 & 60" - four windows open at 60 kays). Didn't even have a tape deck  :o

I look at shopping center car spaces these days and am amazed how they have shrunk to accommodate the smaller cars of today.
