Will a '94 Kitana wheel fit on a '08 GS500 w/ a 170 tire?

I am about to start working on buying parts to put on a '94 Kitana wheel on my '08 GS but before I even order parts I want to make sure the wheel will fit a 170 tire which is my goal. I'm sure a few mod's will have to be done on the break rod which I can do but the wheel, and the tire is my concern.

I saw the below post from 2012 and it seems like it works but he used an '01 Kitana wheel.

Anyone with info please help. Thanks,

Bart Ch.

A 170 section tire is a bridge too far, the chain will rub against the tire. 160 is as wide as you can go on the stock swingarm and honestly, 150 is probably the best way to go.

That's a 170 PR3:

Switching to a 160 only because Michelin doesn't make a PR3 in 150 size. LH shoulder on a new tire is already showing wear from the chain. Sucks, because it looks fantastic and rides great, but you can only run a tire like that for so long.

Mauricio that 170 PR tire looks bad ass on the GS. By any chance did you install spacers? If not That could with the chain wearing down the LH.

"spacers on the sprocket and a small 1/16in. spacer on the sprocket-side of the axle to keep the sprocket bolts from touching the swing arm."

The 160 is the safest, and more suitable fit but the 170, just like on your GS, looks awesome if it can work.

It looks cool.... Agree! ... But apart from the look ... Why a 170? .... I mean ... What is the benefit expected? ... Honest curious!?

I actually wanted a 160. I never thought a 170 would fit without opening a can of worms. The gentlemen that handled the rebuild thought otherwise.

They do make a 150 : http://www.bikebandit.com/michelin-pilot-road-3-motorcycle-tire?WT.mc_id=googlemerchantfeed&utm_source=feed&utm_medium=merchantfeed&utm_campaign=pla&gclid=CLOeiP-W87gCFaNxQgodNAEA6A

Unfortunately even the 150 is too wide for a GS.  With as many spacers as you can fit the chain will still rub.  And this isn't only my experience, others have posted the same findings.  It really sux, I loved that tire and if they made a 140 I'd jump on it in a heart beat.

Be aware, this is not very wise advise!

YES!

Thanks.

If you get one against my advise be sure to post up pics and an explanation of how you made it work, if you can in fact make it fit with out the chain rubbing the sidewall while the tires are aligned properly.  I would love to go back to that rear tire.  (I wasn't really thrilled with the front, but maybe if I had tried a 110 instead of a 120 I would have liked it better)

Or why not buy that in post 4 and have everything you need all in one shot? ;)

I wish I knew how.

I handed these guys the bike for a motor rebuild (30+ K miles) and one thing lead to another, that's how I ended up with a powder coated frame and a Kat wheel - www.speedwerks.com

Some people just have all the talent. The ease with which these guys will just machine a solution and make it work is pretty impressive.

He's made caliper brackets for me:

Badass triple clamp for my SV:

They make it look easy. Quick story: one of those little red plates for the chain adjuster was bent, barely noticeable, came like that from eBay. It kept working itself loose and letting the axle chicken to one side.

Gave him the bike back on a Saturday, Monday afternoon he texts me this:

So you tell me Slack... I have this guy telling me he's CERTAIN he can make it work. What do I tell him? "No you can't, it won't fit"? I just nod and smile...  :D

Hmm, well with that much custom work anything can happen.  Would def. like to see several detailed pics of it once it's all set up.  :thumb:

Well I'm in luck I found a shop who is parting out an '06 Katana & they are going to sell me tomorrow the rear  wheel assembly for $90. It has a 160 already mounted on it.

I do plan to mount a 170 on it & try to make it work. If it is successful I will post pics. The only thing I will have to modify for the time being is the break rod.

Slack

That's the easy side.  It's harder to "bend" the chain.
