So, I rode my bike all over hell's creation today with my friend and his CBR600. I beat into the GS a bit... Not too much, but more than usual. Basically, I hit 8500 instead of 6k like I usually do. I noticed that it started to make a squeaking noise at about half throttle, kind of like a loose serpentine belt on a car. It rides perfectly fine otherwise. I was just wondering if anyone ever ran into this before. Any ideas?

dont know about the bike engine internals enough to pontificate ... but ...

if its a kinda chirpy/squeaky noise... loose fairing panel/screen? ... tail plastics? .. the amount of harmonic vibration that can get going in these bikes does make it neccessary to give a lot of the panels and bolts a semi regular checkover for tightness...

thinking... even the rubber mount things under/around tank could give you that buzzy/squeaky/chirpy sound ... if its the same kind of serpentine belt noise i am thinking of/know ..  :thumb:

I think it's probably the same sound. There's really only one squeaky serpentine belt noise that I know lol. Or perhaps a bad power steering belt.

Anyway lol. What gets me is that it doesn't seem to be speed related, but RPM related: from about 4000 RPM up until my exhaust drowns it out. And it only does it while on the road, not at a stop, so I can't replicate it very well to diagnose it. Would a chain in need of lubrication cause anything like that? I forgot to lube my chain today before I went out, and it got rained on 2 days ago (feel free to reprimand me for my poor maintenance...).

I'll take a peek at all the bolts and bushings tomorrow and lube the chain up and see what I can find. I just hate hearing new noises.

harumph!! .. reprimand reprimand.... mutter mumble chain lube .. reprimand ..  :nono: ;) ;) ;)

hrm ... maybe... but chain would be more speed related i think?...

my F screen buzzes at around 5-6k ... and occasionally when ive had it wound up real tight/high rpm it will chirp a bit as i decel again... plus on a hot day the side fairing/head fairing join will chirp a bit if i havent checked the bolts for a while...

could be something entirely different on your bike.. but the rpm related thing makes me think a static object/panel on the bike that is rubbing just a little on something next to 'it'

JAS6377

You know, when I rebuilt it, I lost 2 clips for the front black fairing cowl thingy. The one behind the windscreen. Perhaps that's my issue... Thanks, Janx. I'll take a peek at it tomorrow (er... today).

Wagoneer

I can't really think of anything mechanically in the engine that would cause a chirp or squeak. Most like something to do with plastics rubbing together and only a specific resonance that's RPM related.

And 8k is not winding out a GS, give that CBR a run for it's money!

Yea, you need to get a new serpentine belt for the GS ...

Matter of fact I am going to call the same fools that dragged my mitsu car through the mud yesterday cos it wasn't "dealer maintained ... morons" ... yea they also sell suzuki cars ... I'll call and go about getting them to order me a new serpentine belt for my suzuki GS500 cos its squeaking like crazy ... I'll try my fake spanglish too ... chit ... the car ees een chip chape ...

Cool.

I bought some of that too, $375 bucks for it ... While I was in te dealer, I got tie rod ends for the Suzuki, that too was $375 ... then I sneezed, they said yes that 's $375 as well.

Essentially I need to go over there and pay like 40,000 ... I told em I'll be right there ... just to wait for me and not close up before I get there ...

... 'Like' the sound of the belt ... 'Like or similar to' the sound of the belt ...

Interesting though Buddha ... We going to see you soon in a grainy helicopter tv camera shot... Holed up in a dealership somewhere ... While the negotiator 'talks you down' ?? ...

I still haven't found this noise yet... Is it possible it's just my air filters that I'm hearing? It's not the brakes or fairings, and it's definitely throttle related. I think I might just have to accept it as one of those idiosyncratic things that my bike does.

Theres a rubber pad under the front of the tank, if its not in place the tank can vibrate against the frame and give out a squeak at certain revs. Easy to check.

8k isnt winding it out, take it to 10 then change up*!  ;)

(*Do so at your own risk, im not responsible blah blah blah...)

JAS6377

Lol. I know 8k is far from the full potential of it, but for some reason, I've calmed down a lot in my riding in the past year. I think I hit WOT a total of 5 times, and that was chasing my buddy on straights.

Anyway, thanks for the input. I didn't even think of the rubber pad. I'll have to check that out.

So, I just tightened down my fairings, and tightened my exhaust bolts. The sound is still there. I noticed that it only really shows up once it gets hot. It's definitely throttle related. Am I perhaps just hearing the air go into my filters? Should I perhaps adjust the clutch?
