Hi all, 34yo guy from Melbourne, Aus. Currently living at the base of the Dandenongs in the south-east, just happen to have some of the best roads in Victoria on my doorstep! Woohoo! Me and the missus only got our L's a few months back and I think I've chosen very wisely for a first bike with the GS500. Extremely happy with it so far. After using this site as a guest for basically every bit of advice I've needed since starting I thought I'd join up to have a gasbag and maybe catch up with some people eventually. Just swapped in some clubman bars and wow, very very happy indeed!
Look forward to getting to know everyone.

Peace :)

Bought one a couple weeks ago to see if I could race-prep it and make it competitive with the new Honda CBR500R in our Production Cup Series.

It is...!

I live in Eastern Long Island, NY.
34 years old, ridin' my newly acquired GS as much as I can before the winter sets in.

I come from a background of always working on cars, then I got into Italian scooters and now, because I did not want to buy a new motorcycle never having ridden one, I'm learning about Japanese motorcycles:got the GS to learn.
:woohoo:

Hey there everyone.
My name's Ryan and I'm 23 years old, I live in northern British Columbia, Canada.
I picked up a 1989 GS500 at the beginning of August for a song while I was on vacation down south. I've been playing around with a 79 Yamaha XS400 the last few years and I figured it was time to get something more modern and reliable. I was working out of town steady all summer and I finally got some time off at the end of August. So I got my L license and I've been cruising around town ever since.

My first impression of the GS is great. The first Suzuki I've ever owned and I have to say that I'm very impressed. It has much more power than I expected (blows the old XS away), handles much better too, really easy to ride, I'm 6ft tall and I find it very comfortable. Its a good looking bike too, I love the huge retro front headlight and I get a lot of looks while riding around town (there aren't too many motorbikes this far north).
So far its been extremely reliable, the previous owner took amazing care of it so its in mint condition. I could see myself owning this bike for a long time (At least until Triumph builds a new Trident)

I bought a GS500F last week but was a bit underwhelmed with the acceleration and stock tuning, but a rejet has worked wonders.  Thanks to the wiki I got a goot baseline starting point and now I'm just tweaking it a bit to get the performance the way I like it.

Update - I have recently co-adopted a '96 in dark metallic red (or whatever the official color name is).

In the market for a full OEM exhaust. Was told it was V&H, found it it is D&D, got home and found out that having a slip-on on a GS means that the pipe was cut.

So, if you want a D&D slip-on, PM away.

Hola. Go by cWj or cj.

I've been lurking for a while and joined even though I haven't pulled the trigger on a GS yet - still waiting for the right one to come up on fleaBay.

I'm generally in the vicinity of NYC acting, but I still call Grambling, LA home. Every now and then I refer to myself as a photographer.

Hey everyone, My names Allen, I'm 33 from northern nevada. I picked up a 1991 gs500e for $600 last week. Needed some work. Fuel lines reconnected and looks like a new battery. Current one not taking a charge. I'm gonna add a fuel filter to the lines since I noticed theres rust in the tank. I came across this site while browsing for tune up info.

Janx101

Clean the rust out of tank ... Don't worry about the filter .. Usually more trouble than help

Oh and welcome!

Hey all, names Stefan for Sherbrooke Queeeebec.  Signed up for the wife who just bought a 93 GS500E as she just passed her riders permit 2 weeks ago.  Myself been riding and wrenching since early 90's first bike was a 83-84 Kawa CSR650, upgraded to a 89 Yamy XJ650 then onto the big whore 92 ZR1100 Zephyr.  Currently without a ride  but won't be for long.  Been lurking the forum for a few days gathering info to help my wife fix up her GS as it's has been a first bike for many who unfortunately showed her very little love.  Happier times will be in her future as I fix her up so I will most certainly be perusing the mountains of information the forum has to offer.

Perspective work to do (from more urgent to less);

- A good old cleaning and degrease as no one seems to have every given her a bath, shameful.
- Oil and filter change (who knows when the last time this was done)
- New rotors and pads all round
- Headlight rebuild with improved reflector
- New chain and possible sprockets
- New progressive front springs
- Valve adjustment
- Full carb clean and rebuild with all new gaskets/O-rings (ok for now but it's obvious it was never done)
- New sport exhaust can and repaint of headers (gotta give a louder voice to that beautiful twin)
- Carb rejet
- New instrument cluster (the ones on the bike are beat to sh!t)
- New grips, mirrors, ignition key switch
- New quality tires on both wheels
- Tank and body work (too many dents and scratches to count)
- Repaint frame (rust spots to remove)
- Repaint bike to wifie's choice of color (she's thinking Yellow)
- ++++ what ever else I fall onto while doing the other stuff

Looking forward to participating in many conversations and hopefully a few meet ups.

Ride safe.

Stef

Boostitem

Hi I'm Tim, Aka Boostitem. I've been a member here for about 6 months but never got around to posting a whoami post. I'm From Sydney Australia, but lived all over the world while growing up, so anyone that meets me typically plays 20 questions about my nationality, not believing I'm an aussie. Had my GS (k7 naked standard suzy blue and white) for about 10 months now, first bike of my own, and am loving it. I do feel that I need some thing bigger eventually but at the moment, my gs is doing me proud and is teaching me SO much about bikes, how to ride them, fix them, and mod them. Havent done much to my baby yet, but I want to do a fender eliminator, maybe a indicator stem shorten and would love to find an old bikini fairing for her, shes bare naked right now (how I like most of my women.  :thumb:  :icon_lol: ). What I have done to her is swap out the OEM front sprocket for a 15t one, which for anyone not doing long rides I highly recommend, which has made my old girl so much more ridable!Oh yeah and i'm 37, divorced and currently single, not particularly looking FOR a woman as I am looking AT most of them. ;) No photos of me (not much to look at in my opinion) or my bike (totally different story) yet, but will provide one if not the other eventually! BTW this site is awesome, so much knowledge and friendly people!

Hello GSTwin members;
I live in Monroe, NC outside of Charlotte. For most of my life I have been a motorcycle / NASCAR racing photographer in the Southeast, I have been published for years in MXA, Dirt Bike, Crash & Burn, Cycle News, Stock Car Racing Magazine, and others.
I am 53 yrs old and have owned over 28 motorcycles dirt, race, and street bikes. Some of my favorites: 1975 Montesa V75 250cc mx bike, 1977 Husqvarna 390 Auto MX, 1974 Honda CR125M, two Honda CB400F's, RZ350 Yamaha, 1974 RD350, Montesa 348 Cota, Honda 305 Dream, and last but not least my 2001 GS500E....
Anyway about 6 weeks ago I bought a 2001 Blue and Silver GS500E with a little under 5000 miles on it. It currently has 7,1xx miles and climbing daily. I have added many upgrades, and I am currently chasing random fuel and an occasional oil leak, I guess from sitting in storage for so long. Looking for a rear shock and a front tire. I plane to ride my GS500 on a 3 week trip from NC to Arizona in June 2014, kinda adventure touring sleeping in a tent, staying with friends, likely a 6,000 mile journey before it ends..

don't know what else to write :D I think I may be the only GS500 rider in Adelaide????? I haven't seen anymore on my travels
You can run, but you'll only die tired.
If you hit it with a hammer and it doesn't fix it, you have an electrical problem

"Ok first things first im down 3 tequila shots, 2 jager shots and avout 4 ciders so if this doesnt make sence im sorry"

Welcome OzTurkish,
enjoy the bike.
(But mate don't waste your life doing a job you hate. Right now it might seem impossible to get something better but it's not, -you can find a way).
