You can run, but you'll only die tired.
If you hit it with a hammer and it doesn't fix it, you have an electrical problem

Started an oil change and decided to use a new crush washer for the drain bolt.  Trashed the old one getting it off and then discovered no one in my town has a replacement.  I will have to have one ordered tomorrow, so for now the bike sits disassembled. :(

I was lazy and used the petcock to plug the tank while it was filled with acid....I knew it'd eat the rubber and start leaking out after a few hours, but it turns out the acid ate clear through the petcock itself. Now I'm stuck with no way to plug the petcock hole (brand new house, don't even have any scrap wood laying around) while the tank flash rusts. It looked great for a couple hours! :D On the bright side, at least I had the foresight to remove the filter element before I ruined the petcock.

As soon as the replacement petcock shows up, I've cut a steel plate out of some old parts I had laying around. I'll RTV that on, siphon the acid back in, and maybe do it the right way this time.

Got some stabilizer in the tank and put her away for good for the winter... It's not terribly cold yet but I hardly have time on the weekends anymore so I figured I'd get a head start. Project for the winter: new fork oil and springs!

Can of injector cleaner and a loving stare. I bought the right bike
Some say that he submitted a $20000 expense claim for some gravel

And that if he'd write a letter of condolance he would at least spell your name right.

Pulled the tank off to fettle and check the carb synch again just to make sure everything was tikkity boo after last week and it was. then re mounted the tank but without realizing we split a fuel line............ road 20 odd kms to my bro's house when I pulled up fuel was pouring out onto the front sprocket housing, rushed to get the tank up and turn the petcock off, removed the tank and noticed the split was right next to the nipple so cut the fuel line and re fitted it, doused the bike in water and left it to dry, came back out a couple hours later and still no leaks, was hesitant to ride it home but got there, refilled the tank on the way, going to call up my local dealership and see if I can get some new lines fitted I don't have the time to do it this week, all in all a hair raising day, actually felt scared riding it home lol its been a few hours and still no leaks and cant smell any fuel besides whats on my clothes and skin lol

My GS went to a new home today. Sad to see it go as she has been a very good steed for my former rookie status.

Last Tuesday I picked up my new ride; a brand new Yamaha FZ1S. Going from 50hp to 150hp is certainly quite a difference but the new bike also has better handling and brakes. I can't say they are 300% better but it is noticeable.

This board has been a treasure trove of information and entertainment. I probably won't be here as much but I will still check in from time to time. Who knows, I may get another GS later on. They are brilliant for commuting.

Nice upgrade, more pics?

When I upgrade, I'm not sure that I want to sell the GS. I might just keep it, clean it out and bring it inside the house. Put it on the centre-stand, and there it will be for eternity.

Are you in Australia by the way?

Let's see, Friday I changed fork oil after 20K kms on the old stuff and took a little pre load off the Sonic 0.85 Springs.
Spacers are now 1/8" below the top of the tubes rather than level. I wasn't expecting much from a 1/8" change but it really has made a difference. More flickable, fun and holds lines though corners without having to keep so much pressure on the bars. Oh, and the old fork oil was totally stuffed. I thought my forks where a bit harsh, I just didn't have any dampening left lol. I'll be changing fork oil every 10K kms from now on.

Gave her a full service Saturday, oil and filter, checked valve clearances, backed off and re-torqued head studs, replaced all fuel lines, balanced the carbs, lubed the new chain I put on last week then got kinky with her and gave her a nice sponge bath ;)

Today I road her smiling to myself at just how nice a well maintained GS can be :)

I hadn't planned to sell the GS. A friend mentioned he had another friend who just got the learner's permit and was looking for a bike. Deal unexpectedly and painlessly done.

And yes, I'm in Australia. Sydney' upper north shore.

I only have one more worthwhile pic. I've either been working or riding.

Hey Oz ... Mate of mine was or is selling one.... Feel like lashing out and parking it up for a bit? ... You could still drool on it of an evening!  ;)

My gear shifting's been pretty crap for a while. Unlike the 500's the 450 runs a linkage setup, and basically it's all pretty worn after 32 years of service.

At the end of the rebuild I replaced the heim joints as they were flogged out and that sorted most of the wear and tear, but the pivot for the lever was still quite worn and floppy, so this weekend I took care of that.

I got a new pivot bolt a while back but discovered I couldn't get it through the pivot on the lever. It turns out the original pivot bolt has worn from 12.1mm (diameter of the new bolt) to around 11.8mm, and this has also caused the pivot to go slightly out of round.

I was able to use a 12mm drill and a round file to get the pivot pretty much round again and the new pivot bolt is a nice snug fit now.

Added grease, assembled, then discovered a nice big crack where the pivot bolt threads in:

Some crappy welding later it seems pretty solid now:

A quick test ride today shows it's now much improved  :thumb:

In addition to that, I'm still trying to fine tune the carbs for better idling during the commute. It still tends to pop and fart and occasionally stall and generally seems to run too rich in traffic, but after dropping the mains and needle and trying to get the mixture screws a bit leaner, I ended up with a flat spot just as I crack the throttle.

So I swapped the 0.02" (half a notch) shim for the 0.03" (3/4 of a notch) shim to lift the needle just that little more, turned the mixture screws in another half turn to 2 1/2 turns (down from 3 turns) and that same quick test ride today showed me the flat spot seems to be gone. I'll have to wait for the commute tomorrow to see how she goes in traffic.

All in all a successful bit of wrenching
