The bike seems a lot happier going about 10kph slower for long periods.
I wonder is this accelerates engine wear or is it ok since it has a 11,000rpm redline
any thought on this.

Meh... I put 34,000 miles on a GS450, almost always running at 7K RPM or above. That bike gave me a ton of grief, almost all electric. Motor was fine.

I have north of 30,000 miles on the 500 now. I ride the piss out of that bike, almost always running above 7K RPM. Bike loves it and so do I. Just flog it, the engine can take it.

I agree with Mauricio, the motor will take it, but I felt mine was revving more than it really needed to, so I put a 17 tooth sprocket on the front, makes for more relaxed cruising.

I also put on a 17t front sprocket when my riding habits changed to include more freeway travel.

Ride it like you stole it and don't worry about it, I rev my to 10k when launching, and when on on the highway I usually sit above 8k..... You only live once

Yes to all of the above! ..  so long as the oil level is checked and correct.    And oil & filter are changed on schedule!

looks like nothing to worry about then, sounds like they can take a decent thrashing
I was thinking about selling it, but decided to hang on to it for a while longer
the new screen makes the freeway more bearable and with ear plugs I don't hear the engine screaming so much.

... it's not really screaming till 9k and up!

 I had a 13t up front and I did rev high on the highway but no problems at all, the GS will run close to redline all day long and it loves it. the engine is bulletproof so don't worry and have fun.

10-11K on the GS is not screaming like a 1988-2007 Ninja 250R at 10K is (13K redline) 



I often run the GS up to redline when acceleration without any troubles at all.

As long as its got enough oil in, the gs lump will take it.

I rev the snot outta mine all the time, up to 10k every gear during acceleration etc.

It really is a bulletproof engine, even 2up its happy to be revved to nearly redline!

Actually, high RPM makes less load on the engine.  Running at low RPM and high throttle makes large load on engine.    Low RPM and high throttle is considered "lugging the engine"...not good

did my 5 as well. all but one are still on the road. lol.
