I'd forgotten about this thread! Steezin... that's such an appropriate comment  :icon_lol:

I spent the weekend doing some electrical component Tetris on the 450 and doing the infamous GS coil and headlight relay mod's.

Dunno if the 500 is the same but the 450 has one main fuse and everything runs through it... fine in 1982 I suppose but add a 55/60W headlight, new SH775 R/R, Dynatek coils, etc. and that 15A fuse plus running all that current through the ignition and kill switches gets a little dodgy!

My headlight was dimming at idle and in time with the indicators despite my brand new stator and R/R and sure enough I was losing more than 1V through all the various connectors and switches... with relays I now have battery voltage at the coils and headlight :D

I got 20A micro relays from Eastern Beaver and a three way mini blade fuse holder... two relays under my dash for the headlight:

One relay beside my relocated ignitor for the coils, plus my shuffled electrics to take advantage of the ignitor and R/R bolt spacing being the same, and the three way mini fuse holder:

I still now have a 15A fuse for the harness which also incidentally allowed me to remove the extra fuse for the Acewell clock as I can run it from there now... and I now have a 10A fuse for the coils and another 10A fuse for the headlight.

It might be wishful thinking but I think there's some reality to it as well... she definitely seems to run better at idle which I suspect will be related to a stronger spark.

Changed the oil and replaced the air filter with K&N. I know the new filter won't bring noticeable improvement  but to me, it is still worth my money  because I got a very nice offer at http://4wheelonline.com and this filter is reusable compared to the stock one.

1/4 throttle bog is often due to malfunctioning needle valves.  This allows too much fuel in the bowls and overrichenes the mixture.  Check your float height with a clear tube from the carb drain with the petcock on prime.  The fuel level in the tube should only reach to the top of the float bowl gasket.  If the fuel level gets any higher than that (give it a minute or so), examine the condition of your needle valves, check the oring on the needle valve seat, and check your float height.

It's critical to get the fuel level in the bowls correct before trying to find the correct jetting.

Thanks bomb, I added the situation to the thread that had similar issues. Btw,float height is even and good. The needles are out of a factory pro kit. I've checked and replaced pretty much every oring I've come across as well as the diaphragms, sealed every possible place for leaks with silicone and cleaned everything excessively.

It doesn't hurt to verify the fuel level in the bowls with the clear tube method even if it looks like the float height is right and o-rings are good.  In my experience, it doesn't take much for a needle valve to not properly seal.

What exactly did you seal with silicone?

Out of curiousity, what do the factory pro jet needles look like vs. stock?  Seemed like you said they had multiple clip positions...do they taper down faster?  Skinnier at the bottom?

siliconed the boots around the venturis. when you say clear tube check the levels, which is what ive been doing, the bike is not running. are you suggesting check it while running?

im going to pull the carbs in about an hour to swap the mains and will check the needle valve when im in there.

the needles look very similar to stock except multiple clip points.

You don't want the bike to be running, but you should have the petcock on prime to allow fuel to flow when you check the gas level with the tube.  Probably not much to worry about with the needle valves if that check is good.

Silicone where the boots install shouldn't be a problem, as long as you don't have a bunch of extra floating around inside carb throat.

Those jet needles sound like a decent option.  People have a lot of trouble tuning with the dynojet needles,  which look much skinnier than the stock ones.

Sounds like you'll just have to keep working through the tune!

when i bought the bike, it had the DJ kit in it with drilled slides. ran like shaZam!, cobbled together wiring, poorly coated and rusty tank. and ultimately the mix screw needles snapped off and lodged in the carbs.

its been fun figuring out all of these problems, but finally getting there.

One of the guys on the GSR kindly obtained the optional genuine rear sports rack for the 450 which is made from unobtanium. Put it on last night to replace the home made one which has served me well.

I was lucky ,I bought mine from PAT,We went over the whole bike and did a valve adjust ,SS. Front line, new body work and handle bars etc.ALL after the sale of the bike. !!.

Whom ever ends up with my bike, in the remote chance that I would sell, will end up with one relatively fresh bike.

Things done today. Adjusted floats, swapped orings, reinstalled carbs
