Wrecked yesterday, may be goodbye to my beloved GS

Yep, crashed yesterday, and got it on camera!

I'm ok, knee is scraped up a bit because I was wearing jeans, but overall I'm ok. Bike, on the other hand, took more damage. Not only is it all scratched up on the right side (thanks gravel), but it's also got something bent on the front end besides just the bars. Probably going to write the bike off and throw it up on CL for someone who wants a project. She has done me well for the past few years as a first bike. I've put 13k miles on her, and I've been getting the urge to upgrade anyway.

A lot of times the forks just twist in the yokes and get out of alignment.  I've had it happen several times on my dirt bike.  Just loosen the yokes and the fork brace and knock the front tire around a bit.  If you can't get it straight then you would have to take the forks off and examine further.

Good to hear your are all right. Why did you crash though? Nothing seems obviously in the vid.

-Crossing the centre line where all the oil and other garbage is left
-Very light rain which doesn't quite wash everything away
-Probably even some moss in an area like that
-Goofing around letting the bike move under you
-13K miles in a few years is a very light rider. I've done about that in less than a year. Probably never goes out in the wet, hit a slip and froze up.

Watevaman

Yep, was wet, and some buddies threw it out there that the camber changes in the center so when I crossed the middle a bit it f%&ked up my grip level.

But no, RedMark, I ride in the rain all the time, I just don't do twisties and stupid stuff in the rain normally.

Throttle didn't change and I didn't touch the brakes. It pretty much came down to me not leaning off the bike (didn't want to hang off with jeans on) and the tire losing grip on the wet surface.

I don't understand how this happened, seriously. dude, i'm sorry that you fell, sucks. you're the third person since april that has crashed on these forums.

Big Rich

Bummer Watevaman. Glad to hear you're ok though.

I don't see what all the discussion is about though. I think it was described pretty well - camber change in the center of the road, little bit of water, lean angle of the bike, etc.. Bottom line: physics always wins.

Like Bomb said: a tweaked front end could be fixed pretty easily. And there are enough people here with oddball parts that you could get back on the road pretty quick if you want.

I've got Pirelli Sport Demons on there, with about 3k miles on them.

Not leaning with the bike/letting the bike wallow under you might have made it worse, but I think this was inevitable because of poor line choice.

Hit a slippy bump and lost the front tyre.

Throttle didn't change

You need a bit more power in turns.

You don't need to hang off, just lean your head and shoulders going in the same direction you want to turn. Lean forward a bit more.

Man that sucks!
What are you going to replace it with?

Sorry to see that wreck.  Balls,.....but glad you're ok.

That doesn't look right... those SD's should have handled that lean angle (and more).
Did it start raining not long before this happened, or was there any oil/gravel on the road, that doesn't show up on the vid?
'04 GS500F with 50k miles updated July 2022.
Ride it like a 2 stroke:
1: Rev high
2: Add oil
3: Repeat

Watevaman

Nope, no oil/gravel that I saw and no leaves where I fell. I'd say that road was perpetually wet. We had rain for a few days before this run and even a light sprinkle the morning of (I was out around 1-2 PM), so theoretically the road was washed clean.

As for what I'm replacing it with, if I can get to it this weekend, I'm going to look at a Kawi (OMG KILL THE HERETIC) ZRX1100. Fell in love with the bike since the first time I saw it and just can't get it out of my head.

The Eddie Lawson bike?  Nice choice. It the only thing that pulls off the square headlight imho.

Glad you are OK!!!  The ZRX1100 is a cool looking bike  :thumb:

My ZRX1100 is prob the best bike I've ever bought, or ridden. Turned mine into a touring bike.

Regardless of any comments made you walked away and that is what matters. There are only 2 certainties of bike riding "you will get a wet arse and sooner or latter you will kiss the road".

As far as new bikes go try at least 3 different ones as you could be very surprised that what was not so interesting before is perfect when you are on it. Just went through it myself after my R1150RT caught on fire
