Have you ridden without the screen, does it really make a difference in deflecting the wind or it just looks good?

I like that little screen too... what does it look like from the back (a pic of the dash/gauges) ?

Mostly it just looks good. It probably takes a bit of the punch out of your chest on the highway, but you really need to get low to get any warming benefit out of it.

I was thinking about replacing it with on of these. http://www.slipstreamer.com/motorcycle/stealth/

It's just a single sheet of plastic with a couple of metal plates for mounting. But it really brings a naked bike together and protects the important bits from the elements. I'll get a photo soon-ish.

Some better picture links below. It's really tough and has withstood most attempts to scratch it, except for a bad spot on the left-hand side where a bird crapped on it and I had to scrub it off with a kitchen scourer. Also, one of the foam rubber dealies has gone missing.

You can see here one of the foam dealies missing. The missing one was just above the 100KMH mark on the dial, and the other is above 7000RPM mark.

Looks really cool

You can almost make out the scratches I made on the right side of the picture.

SalsCREW

Hello,
I'm Sal from upstate NY. 40yrs old
I did the MSF course in '09. work/money was tight at the time, but finally got my own bike this summer. 06 gs500f. I figured on a gs500 for its reputation as a good starter and all around bike.  not sure how long I'll keep it. I eventually want to move onto an adventure bike. V-Strom or maybe a Honda NC700x.

The previous owner converted the bike to a naked and used the 'F' headlamp as others did here on this site. I like the look but the bracket work is a bit sloppy & the turn signals hang awkwardly. I'm thinking of going back to fairings because of this, plus I have limited space to store the fairings.

so far I've put about 250mi on it. We'll see how long I hold onto it. 2yrs? 12yrs?

great forum
learned a lot so far
thanks, Sal

Nuckingfutz

I am Nucking Futz and hail from the Deep South. I've been riding everything with wheels (and some without) since the age of 5. I ride a 2001 Softail aka "Deathbagger" now but have no preferences as to make, model or persuasion. Just as long as its fun and fast. Probably why I've got a couple divorces behind me... Ha.

Currently working on a 2001 GS500 that I literally found in the trash. It was sticking out of a construction dumpster when I rode by and stopped. I drug it out and have been waiting on time to resurrect it. It had been wrecked and taken advantage of and certainly abused when I saved it from the garbage pit. So far all I've found is the starter clutch problems and the beginnings of goats. Look forward to getting it running and riding it. Best way to learn is to eff something up a couple times before you get t right. Hope to get much knowledge here and give a little back.

Hi All, another new poster here... my name's Dave, I'm 39 and from Sydney, Australia. Bought a 2005 GS500F a few months back, the bike is a bit rough round the edges but mechanically A1. I'm currently in the process of doing the bike up as a kind or modern cafe/tracker/streetfighter hybrid. A previous owner had dropped it and removed the fairings, apart from that it was pretty much stock when I got it. So far I've done the following mods to it:

Renthal super low aluminium bars
Bikemaster H4 halo ring 5 3/4" headlight
Deuce LED indicators
fork gaiters
Wezmoto braided brake lines
shortened and reshaped front guard, mounted it closer to the tyre
Racetech .85 front fork springs with preload adjusted for my weight
GSF 750 adjustable rear shock

in the next month it's going into a local bike shop to have the rear subframe chopped and a tail loop and custom flat seat & LED tailllight installed and the tank repainted in flat black with a white centre stripe, will also be swapping the stock muffler for a small Biltwell Cannon, installng a K&N lunchbox filter and having it rejetted and dyno'd, hoping to get a result in the low 40s as the guy who'll be tuning it is a gun. And finally when I've got a spare $300 or so I'll be ditching the stock gauges for a single 52mm Acewel gauge monted on the right fork tube.
