So over spending so much time on this...

Ran it for a few minutes yesterday, can't detect an exhaust leak from either header.
Ducked up to Supercheap and bought a can of carb and throttle body cleaner...
I'd prefer to do a full and proper dip but I need her back on the road tomorrow.

They're coming off the bike today and getting dismantled and gonna get a spray through every circuit, let it soak for a bit, do it again, then blow through with compressed air.
I knew I should've cleaned the carbs before putting them on... and I hope that's all the issue is!
I have a 2006 DL1000 with a "parts-receipt" value of about $20,000 but a street value of about 1200.  :icon_mrgreen:

Any bike I ever had that ran good I got bored with and soon sold...
But any bike I had that ran buggy, I always held onto and dumped countless money and time into. <go figure>

Keep going Pete! You'll get it eventually.

Heeey! .. business idea! ... buy old bikes with some problems.... add some more problems! .. market them to the wrenchy types as "tinkerers dream!" .. with a modest markup for 'entertainment inside!' ...

Would you care to pre order EJ?! Lmao :thumb:

I said this in other forums many times in the past;
It's my habit to purchase a bike, new or used, doesn't matter. Then tweak, tune, and mod the hell out of it until I reach what I consider perfection... then once I'm done, I get bored and sell the damn thing.
Yeah... $ell it at a $taggering loss that is... ...Which kinda' explains why I'm 20 months from retirement and near flat broke.  :technical:

Why are these machines so damn addictive?  :icon_rolleyes:

Hmmm. . Thinking... you need a bush beast bike EJ ... something to thrash and bump into things with, bend the bits on the bike so its in a constant never ending repair cycle... lol. ..

... or an old triumph bike... same effect really! Lol

Electrojake

Janx...
Do you never rest?  :dunno_black:

Impressive postmanship.

Umm yeah I do. . Laying down now and settling for sleep... 9pm my time (which is 90mins later than I like but I had stuff to do!)... wake up 2.30am, drive halfway to work and train from there at 3.54am.... start 5am... I got odd times to post eh! .... plus lunch time (9.30am ish) to try keep awake a bit... leave work 1.30pm and home again at 3.30pm ish. ..

Not ideal but it's the job that's paying bills right now!

Electrojake

Damn.... I'll bet you dont get much sleep-time, do you?
Sounds abusive but I do admire your work ethic.

I have been working in the Electrical Engineering Department for the railroad here for 30+ years.
Office is 9 miles from my house. Cant complain.
Living this close to New York City has its congestion problems (and shitty winters) but work is plentiful and jobs typically pay more as you get closer to the city.

I have about 2 years before I retire. Then I may move south, away from the city, to warmer weather and less congestion.
(unless wife does not want to move away from our grand children) :whisper:

5 blissful hours just done sleeping!, last week was rough with 4ish a night (humid and warm nights & woke up a lot!) ... weekend just gone I actually slept more hours than thru the week! Lol

.. currently the waste depot has me driving most days which is easy enough, only get out to help the loaders on the bigger pickups. . Jogging the roads behind the trucks and loading the bins is a energy drainer though.. not missing that at the moment!

Side note on loading/driving. . Xmas I got one of those step counter/watch thingies.  Garmin Vivofit. . Basic model but does what I need..

Loading trucks-  anywhere from 17k to 24k steps a day (depending on the route) .. driving I'm maxing at 14k steps....

The online tracker told me last week that I have passed 700k steps since I got it! .. I'm getting exercise while being paid to work! Lol. .. some poor bastards have to go out on purpose to get their weekly regime done! SUCKERS!! bahahaha

Sleep's over rated right Janxy?? I don't envy you mate!

Anybody got a match?

With your business idea my 450 must be worth like $20K now...

Took it round the block after doing the carb clean, worse than ever... popping/farting/carrying on and one cylinder.

The left needle had come loose from the slide...

Tried to go to work yesterday, got half way there, exactly the same symptoms... popping/farting/carrying on, also some spits through the pods... like it was out of fuel but only when opening the throttle.

Closed the throttle as much as I could and I was able to limp home short shifting.

Stumped, no idea... one thing I noticed when draining the float bowls last night was that about half as much fuel came out the right bowl as the left bowl...

I hate the train but I'm on it now this week... lovely...

Wow... No sleep and no acceleration!

If I had to choose one, I'd pick, um... I'd pick...  :icon_neutral:

Pick no acceleration!  .. no sleep causes psychosis and random conversation with a drinks machine! ...

Pete. .. I don't know crap about carbs.... but my premonitious invisible friend (NOT imaginary.... just invisible. .. drop dead Fred/guardian spirit/whatever) .. makes me think you have a bad seal somewhere.... maybe an o-ring , maybe a little gasket or a surface that's a tiny bit twisted or has gunk/layer extra..

You have fuel flow into the things, I reckon you make sure the boots are on properly... which leaves my very basic understanding. .  Thinking that there is either air getting in somewhere it shouldn't and messing with the mixture delivery.. or maybe air making a bubble and interrupting fuel flow/delivery ?!

The very few times I have messed with car carbs. .  Replacing gaskets around the sides... bad seal jobs were the prime suspect. ..
My scattered reading of info on these bike carbs also makes me think... the slide bits... they go up with vacuum or something right? .. not a gunk up where they slide to? Or a slightly skewed motion dragging at them? Bent pin bit?

I just feel that whatever is causing your woes. .. LOOKS correct to the eye but has a slight flaw/problem

Just talkin out my Ass probably :thumb:

peteGS

I believe it's definitely a *too* sealed problem Janx!

Took the needles/seats out last night and blew through the fuel inlet hose while holding my thumb over the seat hole in each carb one at a time. Left seemed easier to blow through than the right, and I could hear that sound when you blow through a straw that's still got a little liquid left in it... not quite a bubbling sound, so there was definitely something going on there!

A few hard blows and some more carby cleaner and they both seem equal now.

I'll try to get motivated enough tonight to give the rest of them another once over and assemble them again...

Fair nuff! :thumb: ... tiny air bubbles seem like nothing lol. .. that's why years ago I spent 2 hours in the rain, under a truck on the freeway. .. o ring on canister filter bolt wasn't right.. had a twist/roll. .. enough to prevent fuel draw from engine mounted pump. ..

You make sure you check all the bits though!, compare side by side too. ..for sameness!

Or I'll..... I'll. .. send you my 3 daughters for a whole week! Lol

Janx101

Casting an eye about the threads. .. seems to be carb 'season' at moment... never cracked mine open yet and they still run fine! ... strange! :thumb:

Janx101

Umm Pete  .. your inlet hose blowing thing..... just had a thought! ... the inside of the right (troublesome carb?) Hose... it hasn't delaminated? ... like.. there's a section of inside wall loose and partly flap across the hose blocking fuel flow?... a bit of fuel sitting around that? When you blow it could make the wet straw sound... more blow and carb cleaner would dry that off and sound goes away?...

Just a thought! :thumb:

peteGS

Don't think it's delamination... the hose goes to a T piece and the hose is brand new just cut to length by me  :thumb:

I tried to separate the carbs last night but there are two very long bolts holding them together and I could only get one out, I need to get serious with the impact driver on the other.

Once they're apart I can have a better inspection of the inside of the T piece and the inlet on each carb  :thumb:

Janx101

Good plan... maybe gunk in t piece? .. hoses clamped on there?.. hoping you get a resolution soon bro!

peteGS

Well... this whole thing has been a let's see how much we can &*^% Pete over thing...  :technical:

Carbs separated, cleaned some more, leaned out in case I just had them too rich, put back together, sync'd, all looking good.

Test ride... fuel in, up a hill, badness... stumbling and carrying on again and just got worse as I went further. Plug chop shows right plug ok but left wet... quite wet. Hmmm... keep going, notice the tacho doing weird stuff... doh!!!!!

A coil was breaking down at temperature... stock coils back in and another test ride with none of the same issues.

However leaning her out has brought a flat spot back... so richened her up a bit with the mixture screws and mid main jet last night so we'll see how that goes.

Of course it's raining today so that won't be a good test at all!
