It's an adjustable mount for an IR illuminator.
The knobs let me adjust the beam to be centered in the night vision rig at whatever range I'm currently looking.

There was a tilesetter on a job I worked on once that had a square exactly like that one. I recall the odd finish on it.
We used to joke with him about his "tin foil" square.
Oh well, shows what I know!

Maybe it was a square like this one. I use it for a different job but maybe it could be use for tilesetting too
