Trouble cold starting

So recently i have had trouble starting my bike in the morning. The battery is fairly new i purchased it April 2015, it is a Scorpion 12v 170 CCA AGM Power Sport & Motorcycle Battery. When i go to start the bike first thing in the morning it seems like the battery is dead. It struggles to turn over and occasionally i will get a loud pop out of the exhaust and sometimes it starts and other times i have to pop start it. When i leave for work in the afternoon it seems the start fine without the issue i have in the morning.

If anyone has any ideas let me know.

Thanks,
Josh

Have you tested the battery voltage? Try with a good known battery. Could be your charging system is not keeping it fully charged. Or there is a parasitic drain.

You think Pyrrhic victory is bad you should try Pyrrhic defeat!

The battery voltage is around 13v so it should be fine.

When were the valves checked last?

I checked them last winter (2014-2015)

Are you using the choke to start? Any running issues once the bike is all warmed up?

The only other thing with the battery I can think of is it having a bad cell. That could give a higher resting voltage, but drops considerably under load (starting cold). Next time you have the cold starting problem, try jumping the battery from a non running car battery.

There could be an issue with electrical corrosion around the starter motor / relay wires as well.

On the same train of thought as using the choke..... make sure that both choke plungers move when pushing the choke down.

Voltage while running?

Tested R/R?

Tested stator?

(Rick's motorcycle electrics has a few good instructional vids on youtube)

plug condition?

What temperature are we talking about? I've noticed that when its sort of cold but not all that cold my GS wants just a little bit of choke and won't start with all or none. Very much an exact science.

Also, wider valve clearances and a +1 size pilot jet will help a lot with cold starting, but it sounds like you have an electrical problem.

Cold start i am only referring to starting in the morning bike has not warmed up at all temperatures are probably around 50-60 degrees. I have the choke pulled down all the way but i have tried it half and none at all. Spark plugs are in pretty good condition.

I will have to check the starter relay and voltage when the bike is started when i get home.

Bike runs great once it is started and if i stop and start the bike again it starts right up.

sounds like battery to me..... check voltage at battery one morning cold, see how far it drops when switched to "on"....
