Last night I replaced my fork seals with oem ones, installed sonic springs and 15w oil. I rode the bike today for about 100 miles, when i got home i noticed some black rings of dirty oil on the fork tubes. I cleaned everything very well and there wasnt any rust tubes. Im confused on what might be causing this!

What brand seals did you install? Were they genuine Suzuki or aftermarket ones?
(Pyramid Parts ones are have been known to fail prematurely).
Beam me up Scottie....

It may be no problem at all yet - hard to tell after one ride. It could just be some residual fork oil from installation.

Take it out for another ride and see what you get.

It's opener there in the wide open air...

I agree.....keep riding & see if those oil rings persist.

I have posted about this earlier.
The GS legs are of poor poor quality. and they can be worn under where it can seal.
The bushings just under the seals are coated with moly Teflon - and its pretty poor in some cases, need those to be either replaced, or recoated if you can find a place that does moly Teflon coating.
I cant explain it any better. 10k miles is about the max on a GS fork leg set.
Doesn't it rust spot before 10k too ???
Cool.

i installed Suzuki  seals. The bike is a 1997 with 26k mils on it. im guessint buddah is right and it needs new bushings. i ride her a round a little more and see what happens.  if it ends up being the bushings im not sure i want to take everything apart again lol.

im really loving the sonic springs and gsx rear shock combo tho! pure sex!

Replaced my fork seals at about 50k miles on my 97 GS when I changed to Progressive springs and they didn't leak again up to 80k miles when bike was totaled and replaced with my 02 GS.  Replaced one leaking fork seal on the 02 at about 50-60 k miles and it was leaking again at 90-100k miles.  The other one never leaked or was replaced.  So I'd say GS fork seals last 50-100k miles.   :icon_lol:  Are you sure you didn't overfill, forks take less fluid after change to heavier springs.

I left air gap of 115mm with everything out and the tube compressed all the way. i havent been able to ride it yet since the weather has been in the 40s and raining,

Sounds normal to me. Wipe it off, ride it again and report back.

Even if the tubes aren't rusty, it's likely that they have some small nicks and dings in them. Look at the tubes very carefully in good light. Remember that the leading edge now probably isn't what the leading edge was before you took them off.
Get some extra fine steel wool and lightly buff out the nicks. Operative word here being lightly, you don't want to go through the chrome. You don't need to make the nicks disappear, just knock off the sharp edges. It's those edges that tear up the sealing lips on the seals and make them leak.

Examining and buffing the fork tubes should be part of regular maintenance. Do it with oil changes. Your fork seals will last much longer.

What did the bushings look like when you took em off ? did they have a lop sided spot of wear - rather unavoidable with 1 side disk on this bike ... but the worse those were, the more likely you will have em leak too.

they still leak way bad. i went for about a 50 mile ride now the weather is nice and it started dripping down the clutch side fork tube. just bounching the front end you can seen new clean oil starting to forrm on the tubes. do i replace both the slider bushing parts i take it? the top and bottom? i dont remember what they looked at since i didnt bother to pay attention >:(

do i need to replace the new seals again after i replace the bushing/sliders things?
for some reason when looking at the parts diagram im having issues finding the bottom one.

i found the top one what i believe is part #51167-01D00 and the bottom #51121-01D00.

one more question. in the parts diagram i used to put everything back together with it didnt show a washer betweetn the fork seal and the snap ring but thats suppose to be there correct?
ill give them a light buffing this time with the steel wool as well.

Thanks again for all the help!

Mr. BIGGZ

Were you able to find out what caused the leak?
