Saving my nickles and dimes to grab a 100ft spool of 14ga. speaker wire to redo my av system. ( when ankle calms down a tad. house WAS cluttered. ( buddha has seen that. but goal is to move the rear surrounds to the library wall, ) a floor to ceiling bookshelf area and run the wiring along the exposed ceiling beams. its either that or break out the lightning rods to snake the wiring under the floor. which hasnt been accessed since 1967. im going beamside on this one. too much wiring in one place is killing my fm reception. :technical:

Bad reception is just plain annoying eh!

I think we should tag Pete 'the fibreglass whisperer' !! ;)

peteGS

Change whisperer to mauler and you'll be spot on  :thumb:

I did get the first coat done last night though...

Hahahaha am I pressing your buttons ShowBiz??  :o  ;) :icon_lol:

Kidding of course! Hahaha

Second coat went on last night but didn't bother with a pic because it looks exactly the same...

Will do a third and final coat but need to put some PVA release agent over the top a bit after finishing so it seals it up from the air and cures with a nice non-tacky finish  :thumb:

Not gonna lie, I'm super excited to see how this turns out  ;) :-D

Nekkid fibreglassing... I think I remember that... nooo!!!! Not for this little black duck!!!  :o

I'm getting pretty excited myself! Well... at least to see how it turns out... the final test will be the first pan and that's when I'll decide if I really am excited or not... hahahha

Final coat done:

Had to wait nearly 2 hours to put the PVA on it to seal the surface though due to the humidity yesterday, at least I beat the rain:

Gonna be Tuesday night until I get to check it out I reckon... gotta leave it cure which will take a while with the rain yesterday and overnight, and I have to work tomorrow night, so Tuesday it will be.

Well, my welding is as ugly as ever, but the seat fasters are made up and seem to fit the mounting hardware well  :thumb:

Some random holes so the resin will flow through and bond them securely when embedding between the layers of matting.

You must be doing something bizarre like hosting with a 3rd party and hotlinking them in!!!

Well... there were no pic's of ShowBiz gettin hot and bothered... nor of nekkid fibreglassing... and of course when that refers to me the world is a much better place for having no pic's of that!   :dunno_white:

Cheers Janxy!!! I'll get there with it  :thumb: And yup you're on the money... Photobucket + link = win for pic posting  :woohoo:

Dunno why it's so hard... or maybe that's the nekkid fibreglassing making it hard?  No, just resin...

I think I need a fourth coat... cured a bit tacky so I was late with the PVA and rubbed through where it's a bit thin on the back corners. Rubbing it back is removing the tackiness which is excellent news though!

Bit of a modification following a hot tip on the hardware... chamfer the top edge to discourage the matting from popping up and file some V's in the outside edges to let the resin get more grip...

I wouldn't say the naked part got me excited haha... just fiberglass/repair/customizing/projects/etc in general gets my attention  :icon_mrgreen:  ;)

PETE I have to ask you... what exactly is the white coating you're using? The only fiberglassing I've done so far in my life is repair stuff and then I use duraglas over top to smooth it out... or if it's in a place that doesn't have to look nice I just use self-etching primer and then whatever top coat I'm using.

Totally gotta knowwwwwwwwww

Hahahahaha safe response ShowBiz!!!  :icon_lol: :thumb:

That's just gelcoat, nothing special at all. I believe the duraglas is basically gelcoat with additives to make it cure nicely in air without going tacky. Gelcoat is designed to be used in a mould where it goes on to the waxed mould first with the fibreglass laid in on top of it. This way the gelcoat cures with no exposure to air, so when the glass is separated from the mould it comes out with the gelcoat adhered to it for a nice smooth finish.

If you use gelcoat like I am (the wrong way round), you need to do something to block its exposure to air to allow it to cure without going tacky, hence the layer of PVA over the top.

The trick is to get the PVA on at the right time. Leave it too late like I did and it will still cure tacky...

I did finish getting the mould rubbed back last night, now I gotta wait for the right weather at a time when I can get another final coat on and still have time to put the PVA over the top once it's started to cure. Might have to be the weekend as they're predicting late showers and maybe a storm this avo/evening.

I used to biatch about getting fibreglass in my hands when making kayaks in highschool. ..

Perish the thought of anywhere else! :icon_rolleyes:

Janx101

Random thought quick post...

Something I noticed a awhile back.  Don't think I've posted it here before. .

Had tired eyes from driving night roads a loooooong way. ...  closed and rubbed them, then just applied gentle but steady pressure to outer edge of eyeballs while eyes still closed.... after about 5 seconds you see white! Kinda shimmery movie screen white but it's there!
What's up with that?!

Just me maybe?

Don't go all Arnie with the pressure! It is a micro-uncomfortable sensation as it is!

I don't think I'm damaging anything... eyes return normal every time!

peteGS

I think Jack in your avatar says it all really...   :nono:  :icon_lol:

Hopefully this is the final coat... I want this damn thing done so I can make my seat already!!!!
