What are you doing to your bike this winter?

Winter is here (for those of us living in the northern hemisphere)

What type of work are you planning to work on your GS5?

Here's my list:

  • Speedo Cable Repair/Replace (just realized my speedo isn't work during today's ride
  • Work on some areas that has a little bit of rust
  • Lubing Clutch Cable
  • New Brake Pads and brake Fluids
  • Heavier front fork oil
  • Ride the hell out of it when it's not raining

PS. After a recent oil change. I noticed that the bike catches neutral somewhere between 4-5 or 5-6. This has never happened before and I'm not sure what that could be. Perhaps I poured too much oil to cause it to slip (if Im even using the right word).

Thanks!

I'm in the northern hemisphere but far enough south that I can just ride all year.
So I'll be putting miles on my bike this winter!

I just keep riding her :) one of the few joys of living in Israel is a year-round riding season. Weather is 16-12 degrees at night (55-60 farenheiht) which is managable with warm clothes.

Oil change, checking valve clearances, and finally getting the LED turn signals working (hopefully)...maybe a rear tire before spring riding season, if I can swing it.

I did a bunch of work on the bike this summer, so I will just ride it once a month. Maybe new front brake pads for my new 6 piston caliper.

I have a lot of cosmetic work do do on my bike.

  • This week, paint the rear wheel to match the front that I painted last week.
  • Figure out why my battery occasionally won't charge
  • When my turn signals come in, install the new turn signals, clean up all the wiring that the PO screwed up, and repaint the headlight bucket. Paint the fork brace while the headlight is off. Should be any day now.
  • Install my Katana shock and cut down the front springs. Replace fork oil. Will do this all at once.

Now, even though I'm also northern hemisphere in central TX it's perfect riding weather most of the fall, winter and spring. It's too hot to ride most of the summer.  I fully expect to put 50+ miles a week on my GS over the winter so I have to cram these projects in during the week so I can ride on the weekends. I used the bike for errands on Saturday and it was 41F when I left the house. That's too cold to ride 60mph but it was just nice and crisp on the neighborhood streets at 30-40 mph. I figure I'll ride a lot this winter. The real question is what am I going to do with this thing in the summer? I'll have to put fuel stabilizer in it and park it like everyone else does in the winter.

I rode mine every winter, it was too cold in the garage to work on it.   :icon_lol:
407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

I try to keep riding throughout the winter if I can... even if it's just short trips. We got snow all day yesterday which sucks  :icon_sad: but hopefully there will be days in the future when things melt and dry up so I can ride again. I have a pretty good system worked out with my layering of gear... the freeze-out stuff from Cycle Gear works amazing IMO.

I do however hope to work on my front fender project sometime this winter and get that done... also if I ever get the bandit hugger I've been waiting for since August I'll put that on. If we do get dumped on with snow after snow after more snow and there's no end in sight which sometimes happens here in PA, I'll finally fix up/finish the gixxer nose on my GS. Never have done it so far cuz I don't wanna ride without it lol

Up here in the frozen north we have just had our first snow fall of the season, so riding time will be limited. So I'm thinking of replacing the front tire and the chain and doing something to the front forks. That something might be to change the oil and the springs: it really is too loose at the moment.
Back on bikes and loving it.
