In the thread entitled What part(s) is Missing, we have discoverd a faired bike with an engine from a non-faired bike. And we are endevouring to figure out the Year the engine was made. And we need your help.

Suzuki engine codes are made up of the following information...

Letter = Piston Displacement
First number = Engine type
Last two numbers =  design version of the engine
Last remaining digits = my Theory Only is number of manufactured units of that Version

As follows...

A = -49cc
B = 50-69cc
C = 70-79cc
D = 80-89cc
E = 90-99cc
F = 100-124cc
G = 125-149cc
H = 150-199cc
J = 200-249cc
K = 250-399cc
M = 400-499cc
N = 500-599cc
P = 600-699cc
R = 700-749cc
S = 750-849cc
T = 850-999cc
U = 1000-1099cc
V = 1100-1199cc
W = 1200-1299cc
X = 1300-1399cc
Y = 1400-1499cc
Z = 1500-

Engine Type
1 = Two-stroke, single
2 = Two-stroke, twin
3 = Two-stroke, triple or four
4 = Four-stroke, single
5 = Four-stroke, twin
6 = left blank
7 = Four-stroke, four

So an engine of M501 means a 400-499cc engine that is a four stroke twin. And theoretically, the last 5 to 6 digits indicate manufactured.

For research purposes, would you please put your year and engine numbers up so we can figure out when the engine went from M501 to M504 and to verify the Manufactured Units Theory.

My 2009's engine number is M504-153619, which means it is a 400-499cc four stroke twin fourth design version; and I theorize, the 153,619th unit made of that version.

I have seen an 07 with a number of M504-139453. If the Man Units Theory is correct, it means only 20,000 units were made between that engine and mine.  :dunno_black:

Any 98/99/2000/2001 bikes with engine numbers known so we can figure out the mystery engine?

Going by the 94, we know it is 30,000 units later. But what that relates to in years we don't know.

I think we have a winner! Thanks Jessie!!

Mystery engine number in question is M501-176216. Which means, it was built Before 12/2000, but only a few months, definitely some time in 2000

M501-174442, that would indicate some time between 1998 and 2000? The bike is a '97 but it had a different engine in when I bought it.

Hello. I need to revive this post.

I just bought a GSX400 with a claimed GS500 engine mounted. The serial number reads: M502-140400

Any suggestions to year of manifacture? The seller claimed it was around '96, but he was not sure, as he bought the bike a year ago, from the guy who had owned it since 1981.

I have 1689-74 on a '97

This would tie into Klaxxon's (97) and Bryan88's (post '98) numbers on the basis the digits after the M501 is the serial number.

1404-04 would, on the basis that '16xx-xx' is circa '97 and 139x-xx is '92 suggests your engine is 93 or so?

bill14224 has 148x-xx on at '94 so it (might) pre-date that?

I threw these numbers into a spreadsheet for anyone else who might be trying to ID an engine.

I tried to set permissions so anyone could add to the spreadsheet if they like.  I'm not sure if it works though.

maybe mine is '98 then? or perhaps its not the original engine...

Triple90

That is awesome, Rocketgirl! What I'm wondering now is how the engine design number place the year of manifacture? It would seem as if it's in a numerical ascending order, which would place my M502-140400 between december 2000 and march 2006?

rocketgirl

I'm curious about the big gap in engine design numbers too.  I think we need more data.  Where are all the 01-05 riders?
