yeah.
don't do it.
Its such a pain in the ass... :x
:P

JK, Its ok just alot of work, and I get lots of ideas and projects but don't have the time to keep up.
Wanna move down here and do some layup?
I can feed you. :D

Latex won't work for FG or CF. They have to be ridgid negative molds. Basically reverse fiberglass copies of what you are making.  I vacuum bag them too.

Keep in mind that I have to replace dgyvers tail first and I have to repair my mold before I can do that. Plus I have to finish the lower and a CF GS tank first. Plus I have a few SV and MZ Skorpion projects too, in addition to regular production runs.
I can do several things concurrently, but its gonna be a few months at the least until I can get to it...

CF tank...sounds good and the supersport tail also...Now is the the 2 side panels and little tail piece style architecture or is more of the lockhart type one with cut out base and tail lights meant to go on top of the seat.
Those Sv's can wait...GS tank in CF please...
Cool.

Quote from: klimberi have been researching fiberglass stuff ... was thinking about making a positive foam shape, creating a latex mold and laying fiberglass into it...any ideas?

I have made a few small glass-over-wood-core boats, and had thought of doing something similar to glass-over-foam-core for a rear seat: buy a ripped-up seat on e-bay, remove the vinyl, cut-off the stock foam and replace with a foam blank, then hot-wire-cut the back-end down to shape, and glass over it (no mold needed; vaccum bag optional, but I've never needed that for boats).  Then build-up the front seat with closed-cell foam from REI.  Optionally cover (my kayak seat is bare foam and quite comfortable).

I use the backseat for cargo too much to keep a sporty seat on all the time, so I'd need something interchangeable.

JamesG,
If I sent you my '01 rear tail bodywork and seat would you be able to use that to make a mold for a solo seat cowl? I'd be willing to part with my weekly rides for a while in the winter if you could commit some time to it.

If so, how long would you need my parts and how much you think it would cost?

Good THinking Pantablo,
I think there would be a pretty decent demand for these. I know I would buy one in without question!!!

Yeah that would be cool.  I want to make a mold of the new tail but was going to wait until getting our new '04. This will allow me to get a jump on it and be able to concentrate on the fairing when I get it.

You just want a solo cover? How about a whole tail?

How about this, you let me borrow your tail  :)  for a few months to make a couple of molds from it. and you can have the prototype cowl or a full tail?

PM or email me.

i'm about to store my bike for the winter in a few months, and then won't be using it for probably 3 months or so.  if you need a tail to take a mold of, i could probably ship you mine in december.

Nah, Zara's got a real winter. If he's gonna pput the bike away for the winter then it makes sense he loan you his rear body and seat.

Would be nice to make a full race seat based on the 01+ that fits on the 89-00, now wouldnt it.

I'll put my order in now for a solo seat cowl.

3 months!?  When I was in Minnesota in 2000-2001 it snowed November 1, and the snow didn't melt until almost May.  I call that a 5 month winter!

I was going to ride my CBR600 from Washington DC to St. Paul at the end of March.  Boy I was I glad that I decided to fly instead.  I'll never forget the pilot saying "current ground temperature in Minneapolis, 5 degrees!"   :o

last winter it stayed warm pretty late, and i guess i'm hoping for the same thing.  i rode my bike until right around christmas last season, as it took forever to snow.  i then got to start riding again in late march/early april.  that's where my estimate kicks in.  it does get pretty damn cold here, but i just try to stay out of the snow.

JamesG, i really like the look of your GS. I've been toying with the idea of adding a solo-seat tale, and then painting tail, gas tank, and new fairing the same color (maybe some kind of dark blue...), and this tale looks really cool man. I'm gonna mull it over a while but i'll probably be contacting you soon in the future!

JamesG

Cool dude!

Let me know but just keep my piss poor turn around time in mind.
