HONDA BLOCK IN MY GS?!?!

thats right!

im not gonna fork over 350$ to the salvage yard for a motor...

i'd scrap out my parts and give to my roomate before i didn that...

BUT i DO have an extra HONDA 750 engine (out of a 87honda CB 750)

i know it's a bigger motor and theres a few things that concern me...

weight
HP
TQ
SIZE

obviously how will the bike take the weight...
it seems to do fine with me... and when i rode 2up...
well i've since lost my GF so thats not an issue

HP will i have to upgrade to a bigger chain or is the 520 i have going to suffice? (safely!)

TQ... will this new engine rip my fram a new one? .... i will beat on it so wheelies are expected.... (let the basshing begin)

and size..
from my first go over it SEEMS that the engine will fit...
the chain is about the same distance from engine center to links
but im thinking the 750 might be a bit LONGER

so the heads will probally have a tight fit

im aware that im going to have to make all kinds of custom motor mounts to make this beast work... and im fine with that..

3/8" plate should make a sturdy mount right?

hey, with enough wire, we can weld anything together. (gonna watch this thread a while) :)

Good luck, you and about a few hundred people ask, and say the same thing.  :technical:

It's gonna be...interesting...at least.  I wish you luck.

Oh yea it fits, easy. I did 2 of them, just last week.
Wire ... weld ... we dont need no steenkin welding with the wire, we just use it to wrap it a 100 times around like so ...
Yea go for it indeed ...
Cool.

This sounds like an awesome build,  a nighthawk 750 I4 motor in a GS frame...  PLEASE post pictures if you complete this incredible feat.   great motor,  I"d up the chain to 525 or maybe a heavy duty RK 530 if you can for the sake of being heavy duty enough.    I know for a fact that RK chains are TOUGH AS DIAMONDS and last about as long.

measure the motor's overall length at the bottom, it may be a bit longer.

What about the exhaust manifold? will it fit arround the frame rails?

GeeP

Rebuilding your current engine or spending $350 for another would be cheaper.   ;)

har har har...

very funny guys

so far i've remove the engine from my GS (i want to see what when wrong)

as for the transpant...

this is the same block from the nighthawks (IIRC)

the headers DO fit around the GS frame

outer 2 pipes on the outside of the frame

they are both ~18 inches tal

but the CB engine is 2 inches longer... ~ 20 inches

and as i said before the chain lines up well

Why do people always have to reinvent the wheel?  :dunno_black:

I do love your enthusiasm though!

oh trust me if i had a second GS engine (short of the one i gave to my romate for X-mas (lol!) then i'd put that in not 10 minutes after i removed the old one...

but i do not and im broke so buying a used on isnt an option....

i DO however have a honda 750 engine that i already know runsim not reinventing the wheel out of want but out of need =-P

and trust me i cant wait to shoehorn this 750 into the tiny GS fram and firure out hte wiring =-P

if the 3/8" brackets don't work you can always use duct tape  ;) just kidding (I couldn't figure out anything funnier but I want to be notified of new replies)
good luck

PS. I really hope that you succeed and prove that it's doable  :thumb:

hehe

we'll see

for all that have taken the GS engine out of the fram before they know its a PITA

the honda engine is WIDER and 2" longer so this shold be interesting....

i wouldnt be supporised if i have to take off the top end to preform the surgery

:o

I wouldn't even try, to be honest.  I would rather find a CR500R block and do that.  Twice the horsepower, half the weight (the engine, that is).

Or I'd do something really interesting...like cut the outer jugs off a GSXR1000 block, cut the 1 and 4 sections off the head, then adapt the con rods to fit the GS500 crank.  Of course you'd have to build a 1.5mm spacer between the block and jugs, but I think it could work.

The CR500 thing would be easier, though...a CR1000 would be super awesome and still easier...

starshooter10

yeah i took the CB block out...

i will have to extend my frame~2 inches on the bottom end

and if i paid for another block it would probally be a RGV engine *evil

makenzie71

never go with an rgv engine.  If you want to go that route, go for a banshee engine.

bobthebiker

hell with banshee.   I got a buddy running an RZ right now, and honestly, its a HUGE pain in the balls.  I'd rather adapt something meaner into that frame,  like, ohhhh I dont know, say a gsxr250 motor?

I didn't have the heart to tell you that if you used the current GS chainline your CB engine would not end up in the middle of the bike...even if it did fit inside the frame.
