errr... Ross... just checkin .. did you turn the little screw at the back side of the petcock to off .. 180 deg clockwise ... before you pulled the lines?

RossLH

If you're talking about the tank petcock, yes that was off (and its a 90° turn, not 180°). If you're talking about the main petcock....there is no screw on the back, and no 'OFF' position.

Janx101

err yep... yep..  and mine does turn 180 for some reason?.. i think?... my tech exp is limited.. just from my own stuffups in the past with the simple "numbskull" forgot it stuff... i like to mention it just in case..  :thumb:

Right on, man! I appreciate the tip, regardless; every little bit does help. Concerning the petcock, the thing I'm most worried about is the fact that the vacuum line was full of gas. That's no indication of anything good.

If you're vacuum line is full of gas, that could be a simple explanation for the entire problem you've been having...
Obviously the petcock is jacked.

There you go!  I think you've already dealt with the 2 weakest points on this bike; the petcock and the needle valves.  Once you have those done, you will be golden, and most likely with an extra working engine :).

The petcock is a problem. Still left not addressed is the oil problem and subsequent transmission and/or bearing damage due to oil starvation. Right now, there is a bad noise in the transmission when turned in neutral.* Keep in mind, over a course of 20 miles, I lost 2 quarts of oil, the engine threatened to cut out on the highway (refused to rev over 5k RPM, and slowly got worse), and the lower case was hot to the point in which I damn near burned myself pulling the dipstick, and smoke steadily came out of the filler.

*Transmission failure is something I'm unfortunately very familiar with. To put it gingerly, my previous car made just a little bit of power--I had no problem outrunning GXS-R600's in it. Over the course of about a year and a half, I blew out three built transmissions. The noise my GS's transmission is making is all too familiar. The engine/transmission I ordered was far from a blind decision, though it was admittedly more for security and peace of mind than bare necessity.

And if I end up with a spare engine/transmission, well I guess worse things have happened.

:icon_mrgreen:  :icon_rolleyes: mmmm smoke eh!... well obviously its an electrical problem in your engine then!... mebbe the RR, mebbe the plugs ... every time i work on electrical stuff and the smoke leaks out .. then the thing doesnt work anymore!.. and a bike motor being a semi sealed type of system is obviously collecting the smoke and storing it in the case! ... also its well documented that a build up of smoke in a contained area is often synonymous with extreme heat in the same area! ...  :cookoo:  :thumb:

as a side note .. http://www.peizhang.com/forfun/forfun_writings_smoke.htm     O0

which also leads me to this thought... if you have upgraded to stronger bulbs in the headlights then their extra dark collecting properties may in fact be overloading your entire bike .. strange things can happen to smoke under pressure and its subsequent stressing of surrounding components may even affect your vacuum line/fuel issue .. at least one might extrapolate this from musings on the nature of vacuum and its attractive properties vis a vis smoke collection!

phew.. thats enough heavy thinking for me today..

Bought a personalised plate for the GS500, waiting for it in the mail.

Then I bought another bike, a Bandit 1200S, so had to buy another personalised plate for it (cannot have one bike with and one without can I!).  Lucky both plates are just the reverse of each other. :thumb:

mister

Ah, you went the bandit. Nice. I found it Very easy to speed on the S model and so much grunt a gear our two too high in corners and it still pulls out with ease.

LOL, I'm hoping that I never see these guys in anger :police: when riding the Bandit.  Taking delivery next week (Wednesday), current owner (work colleague) is flying interstate and riding his newer Bandit home (roughly 2050kms or 1,280 miles for the imperialists :icon_mrgreen:) across 4 states over 2 days.

Keeping the GS500 for weekday riding, the Bandit is the weekender.

mister

That's how I divide the time between my gs and honda 919.
