New tires are in! Ordered a set of Battleax BT-45's yesterday, and they showed up today. Monday I'm taking the wheels off and heading over to the bike shop to get them mounted. I can finally get back on the GS!

West Seattle Bike Cave tasks:
1. jmill came over with a muffler damaged when he got hit recently. Only damage was muffler so we took a good one from the parts pile and replaced it. Car driver (young, wealthy) will be paying for it! (And has agreed to to avoid insurance issues) Then adjusted chain and washed his bike.
2. BrianRC came over with gender confused/changed Audry (used to be called Quin) and  put in new Amsoil.
3. Suzi's rotor is loose so she is retired until I get back from Newark/NYC and will fix that and perform an overdue valve adjustment plus an overall check up and checking of all wiring and bolts.
4. Shipped parts to a couple members
5. Gathering parts to take to Newark.

Pix of new muffler on jmill's Gs500 and old one after taken off.

Sold my GS500 to a guy named Brayden from Toowoomba.  Told him about this site, we'll see if he joins up.

Now I just need a buyer for the Intruder.

vinny

Rode it about 80miles.
Noticed the tacho cable is leaking oil. Again.

NortwestRider

Mounted up our ALASKA tires today.
A 120/70 TKC front
A 140/80 K60 rear
I thought I would have to raise the front fender and bend/cut the rear brake bar but both wheels went back on just fine with no rubbing.

Gorilla and his father came over to the West Seattle Bike Cave with a POS that didn't run and had holes in the gas tank.....
.....and 7 hours later, went home with a running  bike - which for some reason has taken on the colors Quin used to have!
We did a lot! He can fill in the list but here are some pictures.
The first time he ever got to ride this bike! And Happy Birthday to Gorilla!

Some serious work going on. Including valves, fuel lines, missing bolts?!?!?

Transforming into a Quin look-a-like!

Posing for pictures now that his bike really does run!

His father knows bikes, just not GS500's. He was a great help. Both had done their homework before coming over. what a great day this was. It makes me feel good knowing another GS500 is back on the road.

Test ride in the alley - all works well!

All done - now looks kind of like Quin? Front fender will go on when they get him home.

Those are some white rims! Sweet deal, another resurrection Gorilla/Addidasguy.

And Northwestrider.. those look sweet. Reminds me of my old TW200's.

Not mine this is TheMules packed to go on his 6100 mile trip:

I had maybe 5-6 of TW's so far, great little bikes.

Heres a documented trip from Utah to Alaska (6100 miles) on a TW200:

It looks like the shield/guard is blocking the airflow to the fins on the bottom of the jugs?
Edit: I guess the crossover tube would be in the path also

I Ride: at a speed that allows me to ride again tomorrow AN400K7, 2016 TW200, Boulevard M50, 2018 Indian Scout, 2018 Indian Chieftain Classic

NortwestRider

It's right at the bottom of them, and it's full of holes for airflow.

What did I do for MY bike? Did a dumb thing. I removed the battery so we had a good one for working on garilla's bike. When I put the spare LiFe on in Phenix, I missed connecting the regulator so it wasn't charging.
FYI: A fresh, out of the box LiFe will run your bike about 29 minutes before draining the battery on Alki beach. A neighbor rescued me by bringing me the other LiFe battery that we used in garilla's bike.

So when I got home, I connected the drained one to a balance charger. The difference? Rather than charging to a total voltage, the balance charger charges each of the 4 cells in the LiFe battery to the same voltage. You can charge a LiFe battery, but one cell might be 3.65 volts and another might be 3.5 volts. So when drained like that, for optomum performance, you use a balance charger (by Ballistic) that can charge all cells to the same voltage. That gives really super performance.

I learned that from the guys at Seattle Used Bikes. The tech does RC helicopters. he says a balance charger lengthens the life and really boosts performance. So I got one. It is true: a simple charge leaves all cells at a random voltage that sums up to the total voltage. Balance charge and all cells are equally charged. He said it is good to do that once in a while.

So if you have LiFe and need to charge them, get a balance charger rather than just a battery tender. It connects to that port under the gray cover (bet you wondered what that was for!) to read each of the 4 cell's voltage and charge them equally.

Anyway, here it is charging back up. (And yes, even I do dumb things and I am not embarrassed to admit it. I'm a man. I can change. If I have to. I guess.)

I have never had to charge my batteries in any of my bikes even when they sit for months. Turn key, push button and ride away always. Dont even own a motorcycle battery charger.

I have one but was actually bought for the car I owned, used it once when the battery on the GS500 was nearing the end of its life.  When I was in hospital, my bikes were not ridden and it was just over 3 months before the GS500 was started.  First turn of the starter it kicked into life.

When testing and working on bikes you can drain a battery and should balance charge it for best performance.
When you drain one by forgetting to connect the regulator, then you drain it in 29minutes. so you should do a proper charge.

Cods,,,, I think you missed the part of the post as to why I had to use a balanced charger.

Put a set of pod filters on! Got 40 pilots and 145 mains in with 2 washers. Still messing with the fuel mix trying to get it to idle correctly...

Love mine! But you gotta get good ones... K&N are the only way to go for the 450  :thumb:

Sitting and idling, blip the throttle, you can hear a bit of suction happening... nice
