is that a cathode ray tube from an x-ray machine?
Bingo!  Well, except for the cathode ray part.... X-ray tube. The cathode end is at the top, the anode is the rotor. Extremely high energy and heat requires the rotor to be tungsten.

Hold on there...... I would like to log a formal protest. "X rays are a normal byproduct from neutron generators" hmmm, neutron generator...where did I hear that before? Oh, I know I believe was one of my guesses. As was CRT but I digress I did not say it was from an actual x-ray machine.

Can we get a recount? Just kidding, I'll let oldmech have it this time.
Why are you looking here?

pliskin

The black plastic thing looks like the wad from a 410 or 20ga shell.

good debate on the formal protest. LOL. :icon_lol: think i guessed it from my favorite saying. " even a blind pig find an ear of corn every once in a while" that's me on mast of these challenges.
yes it is a plastic wad thing but not from a 410 or 20 gauge. close, it does have to do with firearms. a little bigger than 410 caliber.

Is it a .50 / .54 / .62 sabot for roundball ammo? (muzzleloader)

your up!

No, it is an X-ray tube.  Gamma rays are not produced by these tubes, but by radioactive processes within atoms.

Protest denied!  :tongue2:
To make neutrons, the tube would have to produce emissions in the million-electron-volts range.  The X-rays are a byproduct.  But the tube in the pic can only operate in the thousands of volts, so not a neutron generator.

This guess wasn't exactly correct, but close enough.  If I had rejected your guess, then the guesses would get farther off base... Cathode rays are rays of electrons.  These "rays" (electrons moving in a straight line) excite phosphors on the face of CRTs to produce visible images.  The X-ray tube in the pic does emit electrons over a very short distance (from the small round part on the arm above the rotor) to the rotor, then light of very short wavelength is emitted from the metal in the rotor. The electrons have pretty well crashed at that point.

I know I used the word "wad" at the club during a blackpowder shoot and nearly got lynched...

anyhow, this one should be reasonably easy..

Addy got in first - it is indeed a motor thingy out of an old floppy drive - although Paulcet is more technically correct in that it is the stator out of a brushless motor.

Sorry for the slack response - had an emergency call out this morning..

I would say that the new object may be a hall effect sensor of some sort?
