GS500 rear hugger:
Well, it took a while, but i finally got the hugger made for my GS and it's available to the rest of you GS'ers out there.
I made this hugger originally for a stock 2004 gs500f, mounting onto the existing chaingaurd and brake torque bar, but should fit up to an '89, I dont believe the parts have changed much since then. There is 1cm clearance on either side of the tire, so you if you have a slightly bigger tire it shouldn't be a problem(I have a 140 on mine, fits no problem).
Comes as a fibreglass/epoxy version, painted black and is ready to install as is. - $170 (Canadian Dollars) + shipping + (2.9% of the total(hugger+shipping) for paypal fees if paying by paypal)
Comes with install instructions and necessary hardware to mount it. Made for a very simple install, all you need is a drill, a 3/16 inch drill bit and a pop rivet tool.

Here's the full side image again...as my original posting seems to have vanished somehow :dunno:
I have four more in production right now, but i will be gone for 2 months with work starting in april, so if you would like one for spring this will be your last chance until I am back in the summer.
I'm hoping to have them all done by the end of this weekend. Anyone interested in one, let me know.
Cheers.
will be finishing these off over the weekend....three left
Two weeks and two left before I am gone away for work for while. Anyone else would like one before i leave, let me know.
airbrush,
Do you still have any huggers left? I just saw the post and hope I am not too late. I have an '05. I would really like to get one from you. Please let me know something.
Thanks,
Gary :thumb:
I have 2 carbon fibre left, but I am out of the country on work for 2 months. Earliest I would be able to send one out would be around mid june when I am back.
That sounds good, will you have the primed ones around that time also or just the carbon fiber ones? I will surely get one from you, just keep me in mind when you get back in country!
Thanks a million,
Gary :thumb:
no primed ones, just carbon fibre..don't plan on making any more for a while unless more people want some.
That sounds good to me. Save me one of them and let me know when you get back in-country. I will send you the money. I have a 140/80 rear tire on the back of my bike, do you think it will work on it? Can't wait to hear from you! :thumb:
Thanks again,
Gary
I forgot to ask you if you have any of the key chains left. If you do, I'll take one of those too.
Gary :)
...yup, still have those. I'll let you know when i'm back.
Would be all over a primed one, but I'd take a CF one if thats all you've got. I'm even in Canada. Wud appreciate a PM when you get back.
Thanks !
--Mike
I have some carbon fibre left, will be first come first serve on those ones. Will be back around June 20th so i will let you know then. I have materials left to make a couple more I think and that will probably be it for the season. Don't plan on making anymore for a while after that.
I see you're in Saskatoon, i lived there too for 3 years...nice city. I grew up in Regina myself.
Where abouts in Ontario are you located ??? When you come back i would be interested in one.. and if its close enough to the K-W, Cambridge, Guelph... might just come down and pick it up..
Thanks
Mike
I'm in London, probably gonna be cheaper just to send it out anyways...
OKAY.. Please let me know when you're back and I'll get one from you...
Thanks,
Mike
will do...should be back around june 20
...i'm back. Have one carbon fibre left for now.
I'll take it...
I'll send you a PM in a sec
I will be ordering a carbon fiber one for sure if I end up getting a GS500 in a few years, those look amazing!
airbrush> do you have some left ?
preferably fiberglass.
cheers
i received the rear hugger today.
less than one week to come to ireland.
I must say that packaging was perfect.
hugger came undamaged and along with instructions and parts necessary to fit it (just lack a stud gun )
Quality is amazing.
My best thanks to Jeff :thumb:
update:
I installed the hugger last week: perfect fit.
I've done 550km yersteday under lashing rain and I must admit the hugger is doing a brilliant job protecting the shock :thumb:
Only drawback: my suspension looks to be too soft since there is now scratches on both sides of the hugger where the undertray hits it
I now have to find a way to tune the shock :dunno_white:
I've never had a problem with that..but i had my stock shock set on the hardest setting....

Anyway one can be made to fit a 150 rear tire?

Anyway one can be made to fit a 150 rear tire?
I measured the inside width of the hugger and it is 165mm...so technically it will fit a 150, obviously there won't be alot of clearance, this would also require that the stock chaingaurd and brake torque arm are in place and unmodified since it is designed to fit over these. I would think that you would have to raise it up slightly too with some shims if the tire is taller as well.
A couple of carbon fibre left for whoever still wants one...

If you happen to see this , i'm the one emailing you concerning the CF huggers dude :thumb: I was looking at a ZZR 600 , but after the past few days of riding i'm REALLY liking my GS all over again . I've been riding with quite a few 600cc'ers & a couple 1000cc'ers , and when we get to the good twisty roads around my house I can leave them in the dust . I just want to get rid of that big country-a$$ed headlight and get the hugger on and I'll be posting pics of my "ricer-rat" :icon_twisted:
-Eric
Sounds good, I emailed you the details.
Got it ... i'll be back to you mid-week once I finish the job we're currently on . You make any other body pieces for the GS's ?
-Eric
nope..just the huggers and pewter GS500 keychains...also in the for sale section
...also i'm not making the fibreglass version of these anymore only the carbon fibre, unless there are a couple of people that want one of these at the same time.
I'll be hitting you up monday dude ... the title company didn't cut our job check today 'cause of Good Friday :icon_rolleyes:
Hi, I'd be interested in purchasing one in about a month if you still have any. As well I noticed the mods to the rear of your bike with the fender and licence plate holder/ signal lights. wondering what exactly it was you did and if you have some closer pics I could see. If you dont mind dropping me an email at nickeisnor@gmail.com with some further pics and details it would be greatly appreciated. Im not overly fond of the look of the fender.
Thanks
Dont have any other pics of the rear...all you have to do is make a couple of flat brackets and bolt the plate to the angled plastic part of the rear fender...look underneath and you'll see what i'm talking about.
Ok... For the signal lights did you get an intergrator to have them as part of the tail light?
any more huggers for sale ?
messaged you the details....
I have a couple carbon fibre left
i will be returning to the states in early july from iraq. do you think you will have any carbon fibre huggers then? if so lt me know and i will get the $ when i get home.

Jeff, the hugger looks great. PM or email me if you get the chance, I'm interested in one and also would like to ask you a couple questions re: handlebars and fender. i appreciate it - gaspy
Would this work with the Kat wheel swap?
I have a 140 tire on mine and it fits fine....a 150 would be pushing it.

Only 2 left. No plans on making anymore.

carbon fibre, if you're interested in one, let me know.
Jeff :thumb:
The hugger you sent me was incredibly easy to fit and has done a great job keeping the back of the bike clean. Just got back from a 3,000 mile trip around Europe on my GS500F travelling with two other bikes. On our last trip, the back of my bike was totally coated in debris after a couple of days - this time with a hugger fitted the bike had little evidence of the epic trip we had just completed starting from the Lake District in the UK down to see the leaning tower of Pisa in Italy on route crossing the amazing Millau bridge in Southern France and returning via the Grand St Bernard Pass in the Swiss Alps.
Best accessory for the GS I've bought.
Thanks
SkiMad
Glad you like it.
No longer making them, have a couple left for whoever wants one.
Dude I'll take one ... you want some secret unlisted parts in trade ... PM me ... cash OK too.

That is not cheap... I'm passing for that price. How much are materials for that thing??
oh wow, didn't realize they would be up that high. I can't imagine that the materials would cost more than $20-$30 but would be hard to make without a mold to use.
Prices are listed on the first page as well. Not an unreasonable price for the amount of time it takes to make them.
These are not hacked parts, I've taken a great amount of time and effort to develop something that would be easy to install even for those that have limited mechanical skills, look good and fit properly.
Not to undermine the work it took you to come up with this, but theres only $20 difference between the carbon fibre & fibreglass versions? Sorry, but that doesn't seem right... I was looking forward to getting one too
The fibreglass unpainted I was making before was 160...so ten bucks extra for it to be painted isnt much. Thats Canadian dollars too keep in mind.
just a quick question. will this only fit with stock tire size?

ok wont fit my bike then thanks tho.
any chance of a plastic version soon? Would it be any cheaper? If not, when's the next CF production?
If making a 1000 plastic will be cheaper. Plastic is also harder to paint than Fiberglass or CF, harder to repair as well.
Cool.
Buddha.
If it was only 1/3rd of the price in plastic (and black) I'd buy 3 instead. I was just curious as lots of bikes come with plastic huggers.

Please forgive the noobness of my question, but apart from aesthetics, what are these good for? I guess I don't see the point, except maybe to also keep the inner fenderwell free from some sling-off from the tire.

Random question, What's the point of this part...?
Maybe I'm missing the "cool" factor in this...

Cars have fender liners to keep mud and dirt off the suspension and other under body parts. This does that.
It really does keep the suspension cleaner. There is a gap in the GS fender at the bottom and this covers that gap. Added Alpinestars sticker on each side and it gave it that cool factor. Everyone loves the look of it.
Hey Jeff, how about a passenger seat cover/cowling? No one makes one. That would be cool. Then I can screw on a couple bars and have a cargo rack. Make it stylish, black to match the seat, a little black rubber edging and I'd go a couple hundred for it easily.
no plans on making a passenger seat cover, and this will be the last batch of huggers for long time...just too much time involved in making them.
Once this batch is gone that will be it for while, anyone still wanting one let me know.
Came in today.
You do really nice work. Too bad you're not making other parts for the GS.

they are not plastic. Each one is hand laid fibreglass or carbonfibre
Trust me - they're nice. Worth every penny, schilling, farthing and even a further farthing.
I have bought 4 I think (maybe 5?) for all my bikes and projects.
The design helps keep the suspension clean. It covers the gap between the inner plastic fender and the swing arm. So crud doesn't fly into the suspension. Sweet!
I'm thinking that's a great addition! O0
Get one before they're gone. You won't regret it.
Here's one on Suzi
(http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb442/adidasguy/GS500/exhaust_protectors.jpg)
Actually, they are all gone now...just shipped the last one the other day.
Too bad they're gone. Sorry I can't spare one. Maybe later this year. After Phenix is done, I plan to sell Trey so I'll take off all the added goodies (as they do not increase sales value much) which includes a hugger.
Maybe he can license the design to someone that does fiberglass work? I can't do it maybe someone can.
If you can't get a hugger, how about buying a stainless steel chain guard from me? :icon_lol:
:thumb: Might be a possibility! I guess I better get more cash before I head down tomorrow! :icon_rolleyes:
Sorry if this is dumb, but would your fenders fit on a 1990 gs500e? (they just have that little plastic lip that keeps dirt out of the moving parts)
Fits all years if he still has any. I have them on all my bikes 1992, 1994, 2009 and upcoming builds.
The swingarm is the same except for color.
The chain guard is the same - but you really should put on my stainless steel chain guard. Much cooler than the plastic thingy they give you.
I'm interested in one of these huggers. I have investigated other options, but I haven't seen a finished result using a Bandit 400 or similar that looked right. I would prefer fibreglass, but I would accept Carbon Fiber if that's the only version available.
I read in an earlier post that they are all gone...which is sorely disappointing for new members who have only recently entered into the GS brotherhood.
:whisper: In the case that airbrush has no more and no immediate plans to make more, I might be persuaded into paying a small premium as an incentive for a special production run.
i was just wondering if somebody could take a few photos of one that not on the bike i would like to try bluiding my own but have no clue what shape
thanks for anyone's help
I found I have one that I will not be using. It is fiberglass.
Will sell for what the cost was plus postage.
I think that was like $200 US dollars.
New, in the box.
hey addidasguy
Are these easy to install? What benefits are they to the bike? Could be interested in it.
Cheers
Easy to install. Drill 2 holes in the top of the chain guard. Bolt on. Zip tie to the right side torque arm.
1. They look cool
2, They cover the 3" gap between the rear fender and the swing arm, thus keeping crud and dirt off of the suspension area
3. They add 2 HP to your bike :bs:
You can browse my photos and see pix of on my bikes. All of them have one.
adidasguy,
I may be interested.. What is the charge on your stainless chain guard?
http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=58237.msg729666#msg729666
$30 + postage. If you want that and the hugger, I can combine postage.
ADMIN: Since huggers are no longer available, we probably don't need this thread anymore.
Agreed, especially since Airbrush no longer wants to make them or share how he makes them (which IMO is sad)
There are 2 available but I don't like them as well. Made by Balu Racing and Red Fox. One in Germany. One in the UK.
(I'll give you one guess how I know!)
And I did ask him about the molds. It was a "sorry, no".
maybe we should sticky a SS chain guard post? Those are available and will be for quite a while.

I have no problem with that either Addidas. You are far more active than Airbrush (who hasn't been here Jan BTW) and I've seen you give this away for cheap and for the cost of shipping.
As for the huggers, if he doesn't want to make them anymore because they are too troublesome or time consuming or maybe lost interest or doesn't have time, fine, I get that. But don't be selfish and hold everyone else back in the community by not wanting to share how he makes them or passing on/selling the mold. It's not like there aren't tons of videos out there on YouTube anyway on how to make negative molds for reproduction anyway. Eventually I am going to get me a Bandit 1200 hugger, paint it and dip it with Hydrographics
i agree with you weed,...was just looking at the pics thinking, 'that can't be that dammm hard' and now looking at 3d printing because my brain went in that direction. I think it'd be great to man up a load of huggers for the gs.
How difficult would it be take one of those rear huggers and create a mold from it?
I've been seriously considering purchasing a 3d printer, although I'm not sure if a hugger produced using a 3d printer would be durable enough.
It would not be hard at all. Injection molding is also an option
It's a shame they are not made any more... It's too bad he can't just sell the moldings to someone who would want to produce them again. The market is already small enough for the GS...
Hi All,
If there is enough interest in them, a "yes" for sure, of more than 6 people then I would consider making another run.
They would be the black fibreglass version only.
Those that want one, put a reply up. No maybes, or i've been thinking about it....only those that want one for sure.
thanks.
Red Fox makes them for about $100 and Balu Racing is really inexpensive. I still like his better.

I looked at the hyosung 250 hugger once, and thought it would be a darn close fit by making an extra bolt hole toward the front... I never looked further after I read that they have a 150 rear tire... figured it might be too wide :dunno_black:

YES YES YES YES YES! There's your six ;)
But in all seriousness, I'm interested.
Maybe its better to start a new thread to get more attention.

Ummm interested = I will buy one.
Cost is posted at the beginning of the thread...assuming my supply cost and shipping costs haven't gone up since last time...which is unlikely...everything always goes up it seems. Would need to verify everything when and if there are enough people that want one.

Reread the OP just to double check... You've got a for sure yes from me!
One wet ride and my entire underside is a mess.. Not to mention my shiny R6 shock
Heck, you can probably get at least half of that sure count from adidasguy alone... He keeps mentioning several bikes coming to life from that cave of his... And his bikes can't be complete without one!
- Bboy
There to much for what they do imo, but there is a guy down the road who makes molds etc. I may talk with him on how hard it would be to make something like that as he as pretty decent prices on stuff he makes. He normally does car interior stuff though.
Absolutely! Count me in for one!
:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

I have enough bikes and people around here I can always need one on the shelf.
My email brought him back. :)
those look pretty ugly IMO....and are totally open in the back, i`d say those are more cosmetic than functional. Bad design, those would allow crud to be flung all over your suspension....which is the whole point of having a hugger...

And that, sir, is exactly why I prefer your rear hugger! Keeps my baby's bottoms all clean and shiny!
Still a smiling man seeing that hugger in my parts closet for this spring. It will not leave with the bike if/when I sell it, unless the bike goes to a board member. Otherwise it will be removed and sold back to forum or transfered to another GS.
Airbrush, in my experience from car forums if you need 6 to make it worth your while set another thread and take orders paid up front and when you hit 6 produce. State it in the thread and let the buyers know. I see that a lot on the supra forums, and goes over fine. Members Put the money where the mouth is and pay to reserve your hugger. I would have paid had addidas not been great and mentioned he had a "kinda" spare. :')
Well, tonight I talked with a custom painter so I guess I'm going to want 2 more for all the West Seattle GS500 Club bike builds.
Yah, I thought about that as well, some kind of deposit on it, for exactly that reason.
From past experience of selling these I can tell you that alot of people 'say' they'll take one, but when it comes down to actually put their money where their mouth it....it's a different story. Which is why I won't be making any unless there is enough interest...I sat on the last batch I made for more than 2 years.

Well i'll probably go ahead with a small batch...but you're all going to have to be patient as my wife is expecting our 2nd child any day now, so my free time to get these done is going to be very limited (as it already is). I really don't have a time estimate right now, it could be a few months before they're done.
I would put money down for one as a preorder

It was spare at the time. Now with more builds in the plan, I'll need more again!
Seems my plans keep changing.... Husky Bike project, the EX500 ($400!) fix-up,.... who knows what tomorrow will have in store?
if it works on a 2000 GS500E, i'm in for it as well.

Believe me I was not here very long and realized the offer you made might have been the last time to get a hugger. I am in a rural area and its about a half mile to the nearest paved road.. believe me no matter how slow I would have went it would have made cleaning my bike a bear without that hugger. I dont mind a little dirt on my dual sports so much. Thanks again!
Now we know what "tomorrow" has in store. BrianRC will be fixing up Quin. So I better have extras on hand. I'm sure he will want one.
As I said before, I'm definitely in for one even if it takes you a few months to get it made. How much do you want for a down payment? Like 20% or so?
Life comes first, though. Early congrats on the new addition to the family!
Jeff, if you can give me an idea of Postage to Sydney Australia I would be up for a hugger.
Why don't you use adidasguy as distributor. You make x amount. Adidasguy pays for them and takes them off your hands. He sells to the rest of GStwins. When that batch runs out he reorders. Just an idea. :dunno_black:
Hey all,
So here's the deal...i'll be making a batch of 6 for now. As mentioned, it may take a few months to get these done.
If you want to reserve yours, you can pay for it now (no refunds, message me with your address and i'll give you the payment info), other wise it's first come first serve when they're done.
Once these 6 are gone, i'll do runs of 6, paid up front. So once there are six total, i'll make another run.
For pricing info check the beginning of the thread.
I'll keep a list of those paid in the thread.
thx

I do custom work so I know how long it takes to make things but my deadline for completion is the end of April as I will be at bike week in Panama City Beach FL at the first week or May and Myrtle Beach in SC at the end of May so Im out. Plus I need something to fit a larger 160 rear tire
you're outta luck then...won't fit a 160 tire

Thanks for getting back into these for the members
only one left to reserve for the first batch...those that want after that can still reserve for the next batch.
thanks.
would these fit a 150 tire?
Fits a 140 no problem...150 would be pushing it for clearances. Not sure if anyone has tried it with a 150.

Now what is this I read that I need to let the brake side 'float? I have the hugger mounted tightly with ss screws on the ss chain guard. On the other side I have the zip ties very tight, with the rubber gasket underneath so it doesn't creep.. I presume that is the correct way. I cannot imagine it truely needs to float.. but maybe it does. I had come across a thread where that was mentioned as the right side does not move with the swingarm.
http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=57417.msg650289#msg650289
Thanks Again AirBrush for making these, and thanks AdidasGuy for coming off your last one prior to us knowing they were going back into production
You did it right. That's the instructions and after 2 years on my bikes they are fine.
yup, that's installed as per my instructions, riveted with washers under chaingaurd, zip tied with rubber gasket under other side. Have had mine on my bike for years (since i started making them) and never been an issue.
Okay, first batch of six huggers is spoken for.
Please refer to the below thread for anyone interested in huggers.

Not using the American Made stainless chain guard? It fits PERFECT and was designed with the hugger in mind.
Well, you're off my list! (Well, I guess it is OK since it is German and not cheap Chinese crap)
PS: I thinkyour bike will run better if it has a chain on it. No need for a chain guard if there is no chain :flipoff:
Haha the chain is going to get all my new parts dirty. So I'm going chainless! (http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/smilin/smiley-taunt005.gif)

Just don't oil it. It may not last as long but chains are cheap. Why waste money on lube and cleaning the bike?
Doh why didn't I think of that, yer logic is flawless!
Or maybe steezin is only planning on going downhill. Then there's no need for a chain.
i'll be the first to get in line for the second batch!!
