Budda's right.  The "I smell gas all the time" is the giveaway.  Two causes for that.  #1 leaks, which are obvious, or #2, your floats are too high causing your carbs to overflow, soaking the filters.

fill up to the NECK, ride 50 miles, fill up again. record how much gas it takes to fill up to the NECK again.

i'll bet you've got some weird blockage at the bottom of your fuel spigot tower, or whatever it's called.

got 142 out of this tank. Josh, the tank maybe 5.3 gal but there's no way it holds that much.  I've yet to spend over $7 filling up my tank.

you may not think it will hold that much but your still only getting 26 miles to the gallon.  even if we say 4.3 your only getting 33 mpg and for the gs thats not even close to good.

how many gallons did you put in the bike at fill up?

@ $2 a gal assuming - you're ~40 or so for a $7 fill up. Not the best, but I can see that if you have over 20-25K.
You may still ahve high floats though, smelling gas = giveaway.

Buddha, he's still smelling gas?  I told him that was a giveaway.  Act on it!  Your bike is leaking gas, either from the carbs, or somewhere else.  Find it!

30,000 miles isn't excessive.  Unless you ride like an asshat you should be getting 50-55 mpg minimum.  I got pulled over for speeding twice in the past several months and I average 61mpg! (got let go both times because they dug my bike!)  :thumb:

Average - also worth checking is brake drag, as well as if you have a different set of tars, that make it read off. Else the dunping of gas in the air filter is the culprit.
